I think Sheffield is accurate there except that it's not black and white players are treated differently. It's more a case of you're one of Torre's boys or you're not. He has proven that 100 times over. Babying Rivera at the expense of losses, playing Williams when he couldn't reach Jeter on the fly from mid-center field. There are a million examples of that. Even now making Pettitte the number one starter and making Wang #3. That's ridiculous but Pettitte is one of his boys. Actually, the more I think about it who exactly was Sheffield referring to with that anyway? There are no blacks on the team that I can think of. Everyone is either Hispanic, Asian or White except Jeter who was already discussed..
That does raise a good point. The Yanks haven't had many black players under Torre. They've mostly been white and hispanic. Very few blacks indeed.
That's a terrible point. Sheffield is a moron, and probably the most entertaining man in baseball because of it.
more idiocy. I wish they'd stop publishing the crap that comes out of this guy's throat. but I guess it creates revenue for them... jeter ain't all the way black? he doesn't inject steroids in his butt so what he took wasn't steroids?
and the orioles have a lot of black players? The Yankees had an OF prospect at one point in the 90s who was black. He was a bust, though. Or maybe it was a 2B? can't remember. Yankee fans should know what I'm referring to.
I think Sheffield is hilarious, but that's because I don't take him seriously in the least. I'd imagine the Yankees are close to the league average in terms of black players under Torre. There haven't been as many recently, but that's probably due more to the general trend in baseball that Sheffield was bitching about a month ago or so, with more Latino players, and fewer black players in the league in general. On the Yanks under Torre (just from a quick search): Charlie Hayes, Tony Womack, Gooden, Strawberry, David Justice, Mariano Duncan, Cecil Fielder, Tim Raines, Gerald Williams, Chili Davis, Rondell White, Marcus Thames, Armando Benitez, Tom Gordon, Raul Mondesi (God I hated that pickup), Kenny Lofton, Sheffield, Shawn Chacon, Matt Lawton, Kevin Thompson, Terrence Long. Another question I had, regarding an earlier comment: Since when was Pettitte the #1 pitcher? It's been Wang all season.
Since the all star break ended and the second half starting rotation was announced. It's Pettitte, Clemens, Wang, Mussina and whoever.
Yeah, but Wang pitched the game right before the break on Sunday. Yesterday would've had him going on three days rest. Not to mention that Wang's got that split fingernail/blister. I don't think they were slighting Wang in favor of Pettitte by working the rotation this way. I definitely didn't take it as Torre doing favors for one of his boys.
The problem is it's now set for the remainder of the season this way. There aren't enough off days to change it. This also gives Igawa the first start in Toronto. A game we can't afford to lose.
Sheff speaks his mind. I still am a huge fan and he was totally snubbed from the all-star team. Abreu's numbers don't even compare to Sheff's I knew it would happen too.
But you have to admit that this is not a problem of Torre "playing favorites." It's just how the rotation shook out. You really want to throw Wang and his banged-up finger on three day's rest? Besides, matchups like that don't matter very much, if you ask me. Between Clemens, Pettitte, and Wang, you have three starters I'd feel comfortable putting up against anyone's ace.
No, but I would have thrown Clemens before Pettitte. As Far as Wang's finger, it will never get any better. Whether it's 3, 4 or 5 days rest. He knows it and lives with it. He has no problem pitching with it either.
Clemens before Pettitte... I guess. I don't mind giving our oldest pitcher an extra day when we can. And it seems to be the best way to make sure the fewest number of pitchers in the rotation are working way off their schedule. And I'm not saying Wang's finger would be healed. I'm just saying there's no need to throw him on short rest after the ASB. I'd rather all pitchers get one or two extra days off.
Sheff is a moron, more bullshit from him. I hope Farnsworth kicks his ass(not that Farnsworth likes Torre its just I dunno)
I appreciate athletes who speak their mind, don't give the cliche answers, and say what they want... But this? Jeez, I couldn't even make this up...He talks so much about the Yankees, OKAY Sheff, your team is in a Pennant Race, Division race, and you're harping on the Yanks... Maybe baseball players obsess over the Yankees as well:breakdance:
I have always liked Sheff as a player but he's always been a moron when he opens his mouth. Just another example here. This is as laughable as it gets, I guess Joe was hard on jeter half the time and the other half he got preferential treatment? Sheff: please just shut up and play!
