This is where you and I are on the same page. I really believe we need a big power OL to win with Pennington the kind of line that can match up and run with 8 in the box and let Pennington use his great ball faking ability to go over the top once in awhile. Unfortunately I think we are a few years away from that and Pennington may not have enough time left on him for the line to catch up.
They thought they did last year with Clemens. It's time to see if they were right with his selection.
Please stop, the man threw for less than 200 yds and threw 2 INTs. he wasn't the difference. They ran it down Bal's throats? 95 yds from Addai and rhodes on less than 3 YPC is running down an opponents throat? You have very low standards. Mcnair looked like toast yet he was 18-29, 173 yds, 0 TDs, 2 INts while manning was "the difference" going 15-30, 170 yds, 0 TDs and 2 INts. The #s are almost identical. Manning was not the differnence, the D was the difference. I give credit to manning for that final scoring drive to put the game out of reach where he made great 3rd down throw to Clark but outside of that he did nothing all day and if you think so then you do not understand the game.
See you finally get it. Two qb's can have a very similar stat line and one makes the key plays, puts fear into the D and his team controls the game. It's a rather strong argument for how stats and people who use them with out knowledge of what they are watching still don't have a solid argument. You are actually arguing that McNair had as good a game as Manning. That's simply a fools argument.
What fear did he put into bal's D by throwing zero TDsw/ 1 INTs and having his RBs rush for less than 3 YPC? I understand that stats don't tell the whole story in many cases but this is not one of those. both Mcnair and manning played similar games, the only difference was up 6 manning made a tremendous throw on a big 3rd down to get Indy in FG range to put them up 9 and end the game but other than that he did nothing. He put the fear of god into a D by not leading his O to a TD? by throwing 2 INTs? by helping his RBs rush for less than 3 YPC? Come on Winston, this is a silly argument and you know it. Let's look at some more #s: -Indy had 31 mins TOP compared to 28 for bal- Indy didn't control the clock w/ a huge TOP advantage. -Net yds: Indy 261, bal 244 -average gain; Indy 4 yds, bal 4.8 -net yds passing : both 161 -Manning was 4-15 on 3rd downs w/ 2 INts The difference in the game? indy's d had 2 sacks to 1 for bal, Indy's D forced 4 TOs compared to Bal forcing 2. On manning's 2 INts the Indy D got it right back w/ INts of their own- the Indy D was the difference in that game, not Peyton manning.
I realize Manning will go to the Hall of Fame and now he has his Super Bowl, but in terms of puttng fear into people, I think he's a mixed bag. In his dome with living room conditions he's very scary, get him on the road in the cold with a hostile crowd, seeing him running around behind the line frantically calling signals, doesn't scare me at all. Maybe because I saw the 41-0 game from 20 rows away, I don't know.
Not a blitz where the Lb's can get into the backfield fast enough to deflect a backwards lateral. That is absolute disrespect. They did not even pretend to hide it and our so called Genius Qb ran the play that ended our season as Beli and co knew he would.
People on this board use stats all the time to defend Chad. A Superbowl caliber Qb can play bad and win a game. Period! Pennington scares no one!
I agree with you regarding Manning and I used to call him captain fantasy Football. I hate to admit it but that player who we blew out in that game is long gone and we are gonna have to deal with prob the greatest Qb in his prime going forward.
Indy has greatly improved their defense since 2002 under Dungy as well. Manning and Brady are definitely the top two QBs and both in their prime, I don't think anyone can argue that. It doesn't mean the other 30 teams can't compete with who they have, though.
a qb can be a product of the o-line and rb....for a while both the pats and colts have good to great rb and o-line....that is what the jets are developing
I don't think any of us really know what kind of Qb CHad is, this is going to be a huge year for his legacy.. His first year he was great, his next few he was injured and last year he was mediocre. We will know how good or bad he really is by the end of this year..
Agreed. Either way we will not be arguing about him this time next year because he will be our future or past.
Indy has a very mediocre defense and always had since Manning arrived. They are not close to a top 10 defense let alone a SB caliber D. The Chiefs planned their entire O to keep Manning off the field, they Colts essentially beat the Chiefs without him having to do anything based on their own game plan. The Pats completely abandoned the run in the second half of their game with the Colts after they moved within 8, they realized they couldn't stop him and tried to out score him. His impact on the Colts SB run was enormous. It changed what teams did on D and allowed the Colts to adjust and take field position and it changed what they did on O whether it was to try and run to keep him off the field or abandoning a game plan to try and outscore him when the reality that he couldn't be stopped set in. That's why a great QB can make an average team great. The Colts without Manning are a very average team.
Of course Manning is their focal point, why wouldn't he be? I'm not saying they're the Bears or Ravens, but their defense before Dungy was so bad they had no chance to win. If you're lucky enough to have Manning or Brady you work around him, but as I said earlier, the other 30 teams can still compete, just with a different make-up. There's more than one way to skin a cat, you use what you have. In terms of a QB, the Jets may not have the top 5 or even 10 QB with Chad, we can debate that forever--we have, actually. But he's proven to be good enough that the team can win with him, obviously it's a team effort no matter who you have.
