At this point, assuming they hold on tonight to win, the Yankees are 39-41. Assuming that it will take 95 wins to get into the playoff DISCUSSION, they need to go 56-26 the rest of the way. That's 30 games over .500, after finishing the first half of the season UNDER .500. Honestly, I don't see any way they can recover at this point. Thoughts?
Never Forget... October 2, 1978 - Yankees, at one point in the season 14 games behind Boston, beat the Red Sox, 5-4 in Fenway Park, in only the second playoff game in American League history.
Nice, the response is going to of course be their done w/ the rate of Mets n Sox fans to Yanks fans. I think they can win the wildcard. Is it being optimistic? maybe is this an impossible feat? NO
I think there's just too many teams in front of them. Are the Yankees as good as the A's, Mariners, and Twins? probably. But will they do better than ALL THREE of them? that's hard. And that's not even mentioning the second place team between the Tigers/Indians, which are both far superior.
Difference is that at this point of that season they were 12 games over .500, it was more the Red Sox cooled off their blistering pace in that season then the Yankees actual performance. In other words, that 1978 team was good for most of the season this 2006 team has been the definition of mediocre
Not only is something that happened 30 years ago completely irrelevant, it was also a COMPLETELY different situation. In 1978 the Yankees were last under .500 on April 24th at 7-8. This year the Yankees are STILL under .500 on July 3rd. On July 3rd in 1978 the Yankees were 11 games OVER .500. This Yankee team isn't as good, and the teams ahead of them are better. They're done.
I don't recall the Yankess sucking last year and I also don't recall the Red Sox being really good last year.
They were 4 GB at this point last year, and you can't even compare last year's performance with this years
Hmmm...I guess you forgot the Yanks being called out of it at the break...They were 4 behind the Sox, and the Sox imploded.
Who said they were done at this point last year? No one with a brain. They were 4 games out of the division, and 12 games over .500. Although if not for the asinine amount of injuries the Red Sox ran into, they may well have lost the division. but they certainly weren't done at this time last year and I don't think anyone would have said they were.
Most sports writers( ESPN, FOX, etc) had the Yankees done... I remeber it clearly...Come on cakes, you should know this stuff...
You also know that ESPN overreacts with crap to make it a story especially with the Yankees, the Yankees out of it talk was more because the media was overreacting to the Red Sox hot streak and that it was possible that the WC team was going to come out of the central, however this season is a completely different animal from the teams you have cited before
I don't see how they are done. Glavine resigning is/was a major problem. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=354015&postcount=160 The bullpen can still be fixed before July 31. They have to live with the lineup. If/when Alou comes back, it would help. Chavez coming back will also help. The Phillies and Braves should not be able to overtake the Mets. The Mets will make the playoffs.
