Of course, they left out one of the biggest aspects of the dead ball era - that balls were kept in play after they were dirty and misshapen, making it much harder to hit. After Carl Mays killed Ray Chapman with a pitch on August 16, 1920, they started putting new balls in play when the old ball got damaged, which made it far easier to hit. This incident was also a big reason that the spitball was banned.
