    Jets minicamp preview
    Wednesday, June 13, 2007
    BY DAVE HUTCHINSON

Although the Jets have 21 of 22 starters returning from last season -- fullback B.J. Askew, who signed with the Bucs, being the lone exception -- coach Eric Mangini has put his team through a demanding off-season program that will culminate with its mandatory three-day, full-squad, in-pads minicamp starting tomorrow at Hofstra.

Offensively, the Jets have added some new wrinkles to their complex attack that includes a variety of different personal packages and motion and has been bolstered by the acquisition of running back Thomas Jones from the Bears.

Defensively, Mangini says his players are more comfortable in their second year in his 3-4 scheme and he expects big things. The unit ranked 24th against the run last season.

    3 QUESTIONS

Will disgruntled guard Pete Kendall, who has boycotted the off-season program in a contract dispute, show up?

Kendall's agent, Neil Schwartz, says Kendall will be there but the veteran is not happy. Kendall was instrumental in the development of C Nick Mangold and LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, both rookies, last season.

Will second-year QB Kellen Clemens solidify his hold on the backup job?

Clemens, a second-year pro and heir apparent to Chad Pennington, has been underwhelming during the off-season workouts and this is his last chance to leave a positive impression on the coaching staff.

Will inside linebacker Jonathan Vilma look more at home in the 3-4 alignment? Last season, Vilma and the 3-4 scheme was an ill fit after he earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2005 in the 4-3 defense and was voted NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004.

    WHO WE'LL BE WATCHING

WR Justin McCareins, who spent last season in Mangini's doghouse, has had an outstanding off-season thus far.

NT Sione Pouha, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, could be the run-stuffer the Jets need in the middle of their defense at 6-3, 325 pounds.

DEs David Bowens, a former Dolphin, and Kenyon Coleman, an ex-Cowboy who signed a five-year, $25 million deal that included a $5 million signing bonus, are expected to energize the Jets' sluggish pass rush.

QB Marques Tuiasosopo, a Raiders castoff, could push Clemens for the backup job.

Rookie first-round pick, CB Darelle Revis, and second-rounder, LB David Harris, will be going full speed in pads for the first time.

    WHO WON'T BE THERE

Officially, RB Curtis Martin remains on the roster but he's expected to soon retire because of a knee injury.

Thats more like it. I like my NTs big. DRob did well last year and between the 2 of them could work well.

I don't think the #2 spot is wrapped up at all , in fact I think its going to be very interesting. Tui doesn't sound like hes come in to make up the numbers.

    Looking forward to that!!

So by your standards Peyton Manning is finished how, Different positions have different age ranges for players, and plus usually those ages tie with it NFL years to the body so your statement is 100% wrong

I wouldn't buy into it. Is the media even allowed at the offseason workouts thus far? Sounds like a rumor that the front office doesn't feel they need to dispel
