But keep in mind that the players that actually WERE selected at the spots (Michael Haynes and Rex Grossman) were considered accurate in terms of value. Assoghma Would've been considered a HUGE reach at # 22, much like he was when selected 30th by the raiders...As would Palamalu at #13... Hindsight is DEF. 20/20
Oh yea, no doubt there, he was still a reach that early, and I've made no mistake in saying "And I would, in hindsight, have rather had those players than D-Rob" It was just a hypothetical draft that I would have been happier with. There was virtually no way we would have taken that combination of players with our picks. Just like there's no way to tell if they would have been as successful as they have been in the NFL if we had drafted them. It was all just speculation
great. lets review every draft and replace the guys we've drafted with future pro bowlers. very smart.
bla blah blah woulda coulda shoulda thing is predator, if we had those picks they couldve been two busts, lets say the jets wouldve made even bigger reaches with those two picks. they couldve been players that wouldnt be on the roster today for all we know. im not trying to blast you, but im just tired of the d-rob trials. the guy looked solid in the 2nd half of last year, and the switch to the 3-4 is a big factor no matter what ecko says. if hes sloppy this year than its obvious hes a one dimmensional under tackle in a 4-3. which is exactly what most of these players who his critics rate better than him are.
See post #22 of this thread. I've chosen my wording carefully, and have in two or three other posts stated that my little mock draft was all in hindsight. And I really don't see a problem with going back and looking at players we could have drafted in any year. In fact, I think it is pretty fun and interesting to see what kind of players we passed up on or what guys we just missed out on getting. Is it productive? Not really.... But it is certainly interesting and opens up new discussion during the all-too boring off season.
well sure. we could have drafted frank gore in 05 but we went with nugent. what makes you think that all the players you have mentioned would ve developed the same way they did with the raiders/pats etc? samuel was an average corner and last year he had a breakout season. asamougha is basically another justin miller. he was a bust and then he broke out last season because they kept starting him. we bench miller everytime he gets beat or something and thats just retarded. same thing happened with drew coleman. the guy played great, then he slipped against the bears, gave up the TD and the next couple of weeks he was inactive i believe.
dude you dont even have a point. go create a chart that includes every draft pick in nfl history and compare them to the guys we have drafted. that should keep you busy for a while...
My point was fairly.....nay......extremely simple to understand. What players could we have drafted instead of DeWayne Robertson? I then went and looked at the draft and found some successful players that were still available with the picks we traded. I don't see what all the hating on one simple post is about, but if that's what gets you through the day, then keep on attempting to rip on me.
I think people mistakingly took you literally. There is a select group of draft 2nd guessers among jet fans, that will second guess EVERY 1st round pick ever made including Joe Namath. D rob happens to be a popular pick under this notion. Unfortunately it was not a great draft year, We were desperate for a "3T" DT which at the time had a much higher draft day value than it does now. The fact is D rob HAS been productive every year he's been here, and at times, is elite. W/ all the busts that came from that class, it's really hard to debate the pick
bottom line in my book is that the jets had ample time to soldify the DT position after edwards got here and have only one good player to show for it - Drob. he obviously isn't living up to #4 pick standards but he is by far not a bust by any means. if you are going to implement a brand new defensive scheme AND switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3, you better draft or play free agency accordingly. i have criticized the move to a 4-3 for years now which IMO was the biggest mistake of the bradway/herm era. the second biggest mistake was NOT drafting accordingly for that 4-3. i believe (someone check this please if time permits) they drafted more secondary (CB, safety, etc) than DL picks during their reign. if its true that is a cardinal sin when trying to stack a 4-3 defense. of course - someone can say WTF is the problem jil, they took the 4-3 defense to the playoffs 3 times with 2 different coordinators..... jil
2001: Jamie Henderson, CB James Reed, DT 2002: Bryan Thomas, DE Jon McGraw, S Alan Harper, DT 2003: DeWayne Robertson, DT Derek Pagel, S Matt Walters, DE 2004: Derek Straight, CB Erik Coleman, S Trevor Johnson, DE Rashad Washington, S For a total of 6 secondary players and 6 defensive line players. Also just some interesting numbers, there are 0 players from the '01 draft still on the team, 2 from the '02 draft, 2 from '03, and 4 from '04. Not really that surprising, but it's interesting to me to see the long-term effects of certain drafts
Well by all accounts we did have alot more of a need on D than on the O. We had a top 5 OL throughout that time frame, and truthfully thats what carried us to acouple playoff appearances( along w/ C-mart). W/ that said, we abandoned OL depth, LB depth(till we were desperate) and also made some questionable moves w/ the Jordan/Martin Situation. That's why we're at where we are today.
