Dye trade rumors won't die June 4, 2007 BY JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com TORONTO -- The message was a simple one from manager Ozzie Guillen. When asked flat-out Sunday if a trade was in the works to shake up the White Sox' roster, he said, ''Not yet, it's still too early.'' Guillen has said that any type of ''White Flag Trade'' is not even Plan Z with the organization, so any thought of giving up on 2007 by trading free agents-to-be Jermaine Dye and Mark Buehrle for future talent is out the window. But what about sending a player elsewhere for what the Sox consider equal talent? A rumor that surfaced less than two weeks ago, which had the Sox exploring a deal that would send Dye to the Yankees for struggling outfielder Bobby Abreu, has started to take on some life, according to one Sox source close to the situation. Not only because Abreu is a good friend of Guillen's -- which worked out well when right-hander Freddy Garcia came over -- but also because the Sox believe Abreu is a slow starter and his best baseball this season is ahead of him. The organization also reportedly isn't too thrilled with comments from Dye in which he came off as uncaring about where he plays. ''I've been around long enough to know that it's just a business,'' Dye told the Sun-Times this week. ''You're paid to work for a team for whatever period of time, give 100 percent to that club, and if you get dealt away, give 100 percent to the next club.'' In a Central Division in which the Indians and Twins have a lot of players who've come up through the system together and actually look to be playing for each other, that gun-for-hire mentality doesn't go over very well. But Dye said Sunday that if the organization is looking to deal him for another veteran just to add a spark, good luck. ''I don't think that would do anything,'' Dye said. ''You want to make a trade to make the team better. At this point, teams that trade are teams that feel they are out of it. I don't think we're out of it, so to trade somebody, one of our core players, to try and spark a team, that won't work.'' If the Abreu talk wasn't enough, there's always the trade rumor that never dies. The Sox were close to making a deal with the Phillies at the winter meetings and again in spring training that would've brought back South Side cult figure Aaron Rowand and sent bullpen help to the middle-relief-starved Phillies. The snag in the spring was that Philadelphia reportedly wanted left-handed reliever Matt Thornton, rather than Boone Logan and a package of minor-leaguers. The Sox have a new card to play with, however, and could offer a disappointing Mike MacDougal along with a minor-leaguer for Rowand. Both trades would leave the starting pitching -- the Sox' only consistent strength -- intact, while giving a new look to the outfield with Abreu, Rowand and Jerry Owens holding down the fort until Darin Erstad and Scott Podsednik come off the disabled list.
The White Sox are stupid if they trade Dye for a piece of garbage like Abreu, FA or not the Sox could get more for Dye than that waste of roster space.
I would go bezerk with joy if this deal went down. Are you kidding me? Dye for BOBBY ABREU? Come on Cashman, find a way to make it happen!
They're both having lousy years but they're the same age and Abreu makes alot more money so I'm not sure what exactly this trade would do for the White Sox. Dye last year was either steroid fueled or just playing WAY WAY over his head and I don't think he'll come close to those numbers again.
I don't see why the White Sox would even consider this. The thing about Dye is, he always had legit 40 homerun talent. He hit 33 for the Royals in 2000. His career kind of got derailed with his horrific injury in the playoffs with Oakland, but since joining the White Sox he's gotten back on track. He might not hit 40 every year, but he could probably reach 30 consistantly. And in a good lineup, 100 RBI every year too.
That author is the guy who screwed jeter on the MVP ballot last year and he shares the same name w/ a former Yankee of the past. Not that anyone cares but I thought I'd share.
hahahaha thats what you think, as great of a player he is and the yankees needing a long time solution for right field, with the money we have, and knowing your B is after him, there is no chance in hell you guys are getting him.
  yeah, the person who makes more posts in Yankees threads than anyone else is clearly a Boston fan. You must not know who is who on this site. I guess thats what happens when you troll.
If he's playing to his potential, I agree, but he's not. I know people keep saying to wait on him, but I don't have the patience. Maybe now that the other bats are all alive, and he's starting to come around at the plate, I can give him a couple more weeks. But unless he starts making plays in right (which to me is more important than his hitting,) his ticket is all but punched.
Why would Ichiro go to Boston? Crisp Drew Manny? Unless they were to trade Crisp or just rid themselves of Drew
Why WOULDN'T Boston want one of the best hitters in the game at the top of that lineup? Plus, a very good glove in the outfield. Plus, didn't he specifically say he wanted to go to Boston recently?
My question is where would they put him unless they just bench or trade crisp. He cant play LF, RF, or DH.
I would NOT make this trade. Dye Gets hurt every Year and had 1 career year last year.... No thanks. I know the are a Few Anti Bobby-A's here but let's be realistic. Bobby A has been much more consistent with the bat in his career.
Would you seriously pick Crisp over Ichiro? Especially if he specifically wants to come to your team? (I know you're not a Boston fan, I'm saying from that POV.) If Ichiro walked up to Epstein this November and said, "Look, I want to play center field at Fenway." Epstein would have him inked in 5 minutes. If he didn't, he'd be run out of town in a heartbeat.
I understand and dont dispute this but once again what do you do with crisp? Do you deal him, you cant stick Crisp on the bench making 5.5 mil.
I don't want Ichiro. He'd cost too much, I think he's going to get old very quickly, and we have Ellsbury coming up soon. No thanks.
