He made the throw. If he wasn't in a position to make the throw then eat the ball. He tried to be a hero and made a terrible throw. Cano's throw cost them a shot at the DP but the error was Jeter's.
That is so true. I could not believe what joe buck was saying. If a-rod gets condemned lowell should be criticized more as what he did was more vicious and had a higher potential of hurting cano as he just tried to lay him out. Joe Buck is a moron saying "well a-rod's play was worse because pedroia already threw the ball while cano still had the ball" what an effing idiot, a-rod was trying to break up the DP just like lowell. A-rod gets so unduly persecuted in these situations because he is a yankee and he has "underperformed". If ur critical of a-rod for his play you have to be critical of lowell.
It was a cheap shot I agree, but the fact is that he was doing it to break up the double play, A-Rod elbowed Pedroia after he had thrown the ball, thats just a little bitch move.
Actually, ARod had already overslid the bag, and was already making contact with Pedroia before the ball left Pedroia's hand. The elbow was a bit much, since Pedroia had just released the ball, but so was Lowell ducking low and taking Cano off his feet. Both players were simply trying to break up the DP. It's the same shit, with a different smell.
Idk you may be right, but to me it looked as though Pedroia threw the ball, and then A-Rod just threw an elbow at his gut. Its all oppinionated though. EDIT: And that's not to say what Lowell did was ok, that was a pretty big cheap hit also.
The elbow itself WAS after the throw, you're absolutely correct. The initial contact was before the throw though, and that's why it irks me that the entire act was condemned, but Lowell gets nothing. Both plays were "dirty." However, I think both are just fine. I have no problem with baseball players acting like men. This is not to say there should be hockey fights breaking out, but these guys should act like they actually have a set of testicles inside those jocks. I just have an issue with ARod being the king of villainy, but Lowell gets nothing but support. Either they're both right, or they're both wrong.
I'm not saying what Lowell did was right but A Rod has put himself in the situation to get criticized when he takes a cheap shot. He earned that right by trying to slap the ball out the glove in the GYC series. I'm still waiting for the Yankee fans to come up with logical explanation for that. It was one of the most dispicable acts I've ever seen in baseball. He has recently followed that up with the elbow on Pedroia and then the yell against the Blue Jays. Once again I'm not saying that Lowell was in the right but A Rod has shown on more tha one occasion he's willing to break the rules if it's to his advantage apparently in his personal life too.
See, here's my take on the GYC play. It's okay to knock the ball out of a player's glove. Hell, I've done it. And I was a catcher and infielder on multiple plays where it was attempted on me. It's the fielder's responsibility to hold onto the ball. (Running out of the baseline to do it, though, that is against the rules, but that's not what people complain about on that play.) As for the yell, I've stated my opinion there as well. It happens ALL the time. It's just that ARod got called out because McDonald is a bitch. The third baseman, who actually dropped the ball, didn't complain. At least not until McDonald made a huge circus out of the situation. I would think that if the yell actually affected him, he would have been the one bitching in the first place. The Pedroia play was what it was. A late elbow, after the legal attempt to break up the DP. It was no more dirty than Lowell's shoulder block on Cano yesterday. ------------------ As I said, I'm defending BOTH ARod and Lowell. I think the game has become too pussy, and it's about time guys started playing like these games actually mean something. My only problem is that ARod gets called to the carpet for everything he does, and no one else has to answer for their own actions.
Cano: Lowell threw an elbow Sunday, June 03, 2007 BY ED PRICE Star-Ledger Staff BOSTON -- Less than two weeks ago, Dustin Pedroia accused Alex Rodriguez of a cheap shot. Now the elbows and words are flying in opposite directions. After being upended by Boston's Mike Lowell yesterday on a fourth-inning double play, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano said Lowell's actions were "of course" worse than Rodriguez's. "I don't think it's a fair play," Cano said. "They made a big deal of what A-Rod did the other day. He didn't throw an elbow. "Of course (this was worse). He stopped and he threw an elbow." Cano had fielded a roller from Jason Varitek closer to first base than second. So he stopped to tag Lowell. And despite being flipped, Cano was able to complete the double play. "He threw an elbow at me but I didn't say anything to him," Cano said. Yankees manager Joe Torre was less critical. "You're in the (base)line, you're fair game," Torre said. "It was hard baseball. There was nothing dirty." Pedroia, the Boston second baseman, said Rodriguez threw an elbow at him while breaking up a double play on May 22.
I was gona say I've never in 20+ years of watching and playing and working in baseball have I ever seen either of these things happen
There's an important dividing line on trying to knock the ball out. I remember a play in the 2003 NLDS in which Robert Fick of the Braves knocked the ball out of Eric Karros' glove by chopping at Karros' wrist with his hand. I believe Karros was seriously injured. I think any attempt to knock the ball out that involves intentional contact with the other player's wrist is out of bounds, since the potential for injury is too high.
Just went across the bottom of ESPN that Doug mientkiewicz in addition to the concussion, has a broken wrist and is out 6-8?
yep. the wrist is what will keep him out. he's going on the DL. http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/blog/2007/06/mientkiewicz_out_minimum_68_we.html
If a player knocks the ball out of the glove within the baseline, it's still fair. There's nothing dirty about it. If we want to argue that ARod did it while being OUTSIDE the baseline, then that's fair game. I'm not going to spend anymore time discussing this. Like I said, if it were any other team, there would not be the same scrutiny. If you guys want to believe it was dirty, nothing I say is going to change your mind. We're going to have agree to disagree. ----------- As for Doug, yeah, he's out for a while. It sucks.
