I didn't know a guy batting .337 with 11 homers and 45 RBIs with a .992 OPS is past his prime. You must have high standards.
Seriously, man. Lowell is only 33 and had one awful hiccup of a year in Florida before he got traded. Between his defense and bat, he's a no-doubt Top-10 3rd baseman right now.
You guys obviously missed the meaning of the use of quotation marks. Like I said, they can all "play past their prime." All I was doing was pointing out just how stupid the statement was that I was responding to. But if you feel the need to nitpick, go right ahead.
I'd say that you're the one nitpicking, since you use Pettitte and Posada as examples of the Yankees not overpaying for "past their prime" players when they were never implicated by devil. But guys like Johnson, Brown, Wright do fit the bill. You basically argued a statement that was never made.
I've lived in New England my entire life, including 4 years in Providence among many college kids from Boston. At any point of failure for the Yanks or jets I have heard the "Yankees suck" chant repeatedly. If you want the honest truth...It is so immature, foolish and obnoxious, that yes, it does bother me this much. And I'm sure thats exactly what they're going for.
It's not worth arguing, since you're just going to defend him no matter what. But his statement was poor. Every team that competes overpays veteran talent. You just do it with the hope that that player is key to you winning a title. The one argument along the same vein that WOULD be fair is that the Yankees no longer use the overpriced vets as the "final piece of the puzzle," but rather have them throughout most of the lineup. You won't have any argument from me on that front, since it's absolutely true.
Im amazed that you could take that chant so personally. Don't act like Red Sox fans are thugs and Yankees fans are model citizens, its in the nature of baseball for rivals to rip on the other team, especially in the biggest rivalry in sports. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
I hate it too man. But if our team is playing like shit, this is what we have to deal with, and that is why i am pissed at no one but the Yankees when i hear it. God knows the Massholes have had to hear plenty over the years,so they are gonna take their shots when they get the chance(few and far between). There has never been a rivalry that has equated the relationship of the hammer and nail like the Yankees/Sox and there never will be. One championship and a succesful 2007 won't even come close to changing that. And 07 isn't even nearly over yet.
The thing is, I'm not even a big baseball fan. It was ruined for me years ago when the Sox-Yanks rivalry became borderline unstable. But the "yankees suck" chant has transcended into other sports. It is not uncommon to walk around w/ jets stuff on, and hear the same garbage. That's all that could be heard in providence RI during the Pats 3 super bowls...As an extremely passionate Jets fan, who rarely if ever talks trash(even before the Pats got BB) it has just taken on a meaning of disgust for me...
Maybe if the team wasn't running adds that called themselves the most successfull team in sports history (despite the fact they aren't) you wouldn't have to deal with that. Maybe if the team slogan wasn't 2007 New York Yankees '?Where players become legends"... you wouldn't have to deal with that. Just sayin... is it any wonder people laugh at Yankee failures?
I think people just wait fpr the mighty to fall. If SO many people hate and wait for Yankee failures,it just means that there haven't been too many compared to other teams and the history of the game. And i disagree that they aren't the most successful franchise. But you're gonna go ahead and throw some dumb soccer shit at me that no one cares about.
Twist it however you want. When a team constantly pats itself on the back over and over again it's really no surprise to me that people would enjoy seeing them eat some crow. Of course you disagree, you're drinking the Kool aide that says nothing outside of what we says matters. The fact is when you say the most successful franchise in all of professional sports... it includes all of professional sports.
Meh, I was only kidding. And Friday I was in bed early, I had to work at 6 AM. I'm usually on here either way. Junc, I can't go back in my post history past November, but I assure you that if there was a discussion about the Red Sox on this board last August, I was a part of it.
