Cox was done by the time he left us, he was more inspiration than playmaker in NE and we really didn't let him go. we had a bad cap situation and parcells gave Mo and Cox going away presents as he walked out the door. They pretty much had to cut Cox.
James Hasty over Aaron Glenn??? Loss of credility with that comment NYJUNC... Philbin better than Abe? No
Philbin had a 19 sacks in a 14 game season. He was the best DE the Jets ever had. You could make an argument that Abe was the most dominate defensive player in team history in terms of limited control of games but his failure in big games cost him. I think Abe was more dominate than Klecko but he didn't show up for the big games.
The best that I saw = 1980 +: 1.) Klecko 2.) Gastineau- One dimensional and a me guy but a game changer never the less 3.) Mo Lewis 4.) Aaron Glenn 5.) Lance Mehl 6.) James Hasty -Would be higher however all of the above played much longer as Jets. Honorable Mention: Bryan Cox, Victor Green, Marvin Jones, Abdul Salaam.................. probably missing 2-3
"Gerry Philbin had 19 Sacks in 1969" This is impossible! Why? The sack was not an official NFL Statistic in 1969. If you check the pro football database they list zero sacks for his career...because the stat was not kept officially. So, unofficially Philbin had 19 sacks in 1969, but who decided on that number?
True stats were not kept until much later Also didn't Klecko have like 20 or 20.5 sacks the year Gastineau got the record? All that while rushing up the middle and being double teamed.
Klecko had 20-1/2 in 1981 while playing DE in the 4-3, the Sack Exchange year with Gastineau on the opposite end, Lyons and Salaam as DTs. I believe Gastineau had 19 or 20. Gastineau's record year was 1984, Klecko had already had at least one knee surgery and I think we were in the 3-4 by then, so I don't remember how he fared that year. Salaam was gone and we still had Lyons. Joe Gardi had left as DC and it was Bud Carson, I'm pretty sure.
I'm not so sure. Both were terrific players, but played different games. Hasty could and would bang guys, and he was tough as hell, played with a broken face if I recall correctly. Glenn was a guy that shut off his side of the field in a similar fashion to Deion, with his speed. Tough call, no doubt.
Jones had 22 in both 1964 and 1968. He had 21 in 1967. Those were 14-game seasons. In those three seasons he played all 42 games. 65 sacks in 42 games! Al (Bubba) Baker may have done the most sacking in a single season. In his rookie season of 1978 (16 games), he had at least 21.5 sacks. He may have had 23. There is a debate about a game against Tampa Bay. He had either 3.5 or 5 in that particular game. Coy Bacon had 21.5 sacks in 1976. Some sources, maybe even the Bengals themselves, will show Bacon with 26 sacks that season. 17 were solo sacks, 9 were assists. 17 solos and 9 half sacks equals 21.5 sacks. I don't like the way sacks are recorded. Why? It is possible Gastineau was directly involved in more sacks in 1984 than Strahan was in 2001. I don't think this was the case, but we'll pretend for the sake of my point here that Strahan had 22 solo sacks and 1 assisted sack for his grand total of 22.5 sacks in 2001. That would make 23 times where he was directly involved in dumping the QB. Gastineau may have been directly involved in 26 sacks in 1984. Maybe he had 18 solo sacks and 8 assisted sacks for his official total of 22.
