Matt Robinson should be the next poll - he was the Glen Foley of the late 70's if that makes any sense. I think today he announces Jaguars radio broadcasts..... Ehh...I voted favorable, the truth was he was nothing more than a 2nd stringer, definately had guts though
last year I ran into him at my local watering hole..... He was wearing a JETS cap, and we ended up getting tanked. I don't think he ever thought he'd run into a bunch of JETS fans in a small FL beachtown bar. (there's a bunch of regulars including the bartender that are JETS fans) He was alot of fun, and kept saying TOOOOOON, and saying he appreciated the :jets: fans, and was glad he had a chance to wear the green. as a QB...eh, but as a person he's a cool dude!
I liked Foley. I remember calling WFAN back then and telling the host of the show about how he needed to play. I recorded it and my then girlfriend and now wife took the tape and played it to my family. When Foley became a bust I never heard the end of that call. I still get cracked on about it today. What can I say, I like him. Too bad he was too frail. Favorable.
I don't mean to sound all bad, we all had hope for him. But just like everything else with the Jets, it just didn't happen in the end.
From the Miami spike game late in 1994 through the 1996 season, the Jets went 4-33. From 1975 to 1977 we had three straight 3-11 seasons, that's 9-33. So mathematically speaking, the mid 90s were actually worse.
In the 70s I believe we only played 14 games per season & in the 90s we played 16 games per season. So that may skew the #s
this pretty much sums it up. He had one good game against, I think, the Seattle Sea Hawks where he threw for around 350 yards, but that is it. Generally, he was disappointing.
Well, 9-33 is still better than 4-33. With the 90s I'm incorporating the 5-game losing streak to end the 1994 season, 3-13 in 1995 and 1-15 in 1996. One of those wins was vs the expansion Jaguars who hadn't yet won a game, they also lost to the expansion Panthers. From the 70s, you're correct, 14 games: 3 + 11 = 14. Can't fool you. One of those wins was against the expansion Bucs who hadn't yet won a game, and we lost to the expansion Seahawks. Very comparable, but strictly by the numbers the 90s were slightly worse. I'm hoping not to relive either any time soon.
Maybe people are thinking "What could have been?" given proper circumstances? Maybe they don't blame Foely.
I guess. The funny thing though, is that people bash the hell out of Pennington who has actually done a lot for us. If you went by his first few games and left it at what might have been, he'd be off the charts. Joe Montana, etc. The fact that he actually perservered through his injuries, won his job back and has gone through the rigors, highs and lows of being an NFL QB, people actually hold that against him. They'd rather marvel over some guy with a big arm and what might have been. I find that odd.
People are leaving out an important Foley game. NE at the Meadowlands, 1997. Jets were getting killed. Just before half Pepper Johnson went down for his career. 2nd half, Parcells pulls Kneel O'Down-ell and puts in Foley who leads the Jets to three TDs and the victory. Outside of that game and a few others, he sucked.
I don't think people hold his perservering through his injuries against him at all. What turned me off was I really believed he had the stuff, he gave us a glimmer of magic in 02. The fact is since than he has never produced any where close to that and while he is competent, he certainly doesn't inspire me to believe that he has that magic anymore. A little reality as a long time Jet fan, Namath had it, whatever it is, Testeverde had it in 98, Pennington had it in 02, Todd had it for 2 games and O'Brien had it for 10 games. I enjoy the Jets fighting and winning what ever the amount of games are. I just don't see the Jets as an elite team with a real shot to win without a QB who has rare ability rather than just a good mind and limited skills.
I see what you're saying, but I disagree about Pennington only having "it" in 2002. How about the 5-0 start in 2004 before he hurt his throwing shoulder? How about coming back with his arm needing surgery and leading them to a playoff win at SD and nearly at Pittsburgh? How about being a coach on the field all of last year and leading us back to the playoffs? I realize those aren't championship level accomplishments, but there's 21 other guys out there as well who make a difference too. On top of that he's had Bellichick, Brady and New England in the division all this time, so we're usually fighting for a road playoff game in the first round. And he's not finished yet, so we don't know what his entire body of work is going to be yet. All I'm saying is this--if we're going to give Glenn Foley favorable marks for three good games and what might have been, I don't get the constant negativity towards Pennington, who has shown about 100 times more in his career.
