I don't know, they looked pretty dominant at the time. But that was then, alas. I don't think those teams, including the Yankees of the last few years turned to garbage in the playoffs. Rather, they had enough horses to batter the vast majority of mediocre teams they played over the course of a season and thus win a lot of games. Put them in with the elite only and they don't fare so well. My opinion is thats because they don't have the arms anymore, but that's debatable, as we all know.
I'm going to agree with you that Abreu is past his prime, but to say last season was bad is not true. Maybe it wasn't good on Abreu's career, but '05 showed he was declining. From '04 to '05, '05 to '06, and now '06 to '07, Abreu has gotten worse, but last season wasn't bad.
There could be any number of reasons. Having the best ERA in the league didn't help the A's when they were winning 100 games and losing in the first round of the playoffs. With so many teams in the playoffs and the series being so relatively short, often times the best team doesn't win. All you can ask for as a fan is the kind of dominance the Yankees and Braves have had over their own division and hope the rings come.
Even if we only compared 7 titles to the Mets' 2 it'd still be a legit case for us. Plus the win head-to-head. And while we're on the subject of explaining things, would you care to elaborate for me why it is Met fans continuously chirp the Yanks for collapsing against Boston. Do you not realize you're using other teams accomplishments against us, your team had nothing to do with the series in any way.
According to you we weren't going to make the playoffs any of the last 3 years. too easy is comparing the Yanks to the Mets. Good point, we suck. We forget how young the Mets are and how they are a dynasty in the making. Guys like Glavine, el Duque, little peedro when he comes back(if he does), Wagner, Alou, Delgado, Green. You guys basically have 2 young players to build around, we hav more young talent on our team and wiating in the wings- how is that phenom pelfrey doing? Don't try to reason w/ the unreasonable. I think it was '03 when in June Shade guaranteed a Mets div title, they were close finishing in last 34 1/2 games back. He wasn't brought here to hit HRs, he came here and made our lineup alot better- brining a style from the dynasty years where we didn't rely on the HR. W/ that quote it sounds like you are saying pre-'96 the Mets were the best team in the City? untrue, we took over in 1992 and the Mets were better from about '86-'91 and from '69-'73. those aren't big stretches, overall since the Mets have been inexistence the Yankees have been the dominant team in town an it's not close. YES! The only reliable starter of the big 3 was John Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux were not big game pitchersan that's the biggest reason Atl didn't win mrore WS but you forget that Atl did make 5 WS in the 90s.
it will always take 4 to 5 people to take on junc and the same for myself... incredible 2 yankee fans versus 8-10 metfans or redsox fans.... bananas....
What you fail to realize is that Yankees failure equals Mets success. The Mets are so close to a jealous little brother its comical. Got Melky T-shirt for the Yanks, weeks later got Milledge t-shirt for the Mets. Then after the Yanks were eliminated by the Tigers it was a Got Playoffs t-shirt. Its the reason why the Mets can beat the Phillies in the middle of august, you walk outside the stadium and you hear the fans chanting Yankees Suck chants.
Speaking of Milledge: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2007/05/16/2007-05-16_lastings_latest_bad_rap-2.html
Thats what I was trying to say earlier. HR's does not equal greatness. If I equated play to salary, then Alex Rodriguez was the worst player in baseball last year.
haha trying to be funny... ok so this is the explanation thread... i'll play. ummm... the screen is bright, the sun is in my face, and i have a 42 inch plasma im watching the game on... so excuse me if im not typing on which you cant understand.... but:shit:
