Kendall not to be offered new contract I think this is a big mistake , they must be really high on Bender or someone else...... http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyj/notes;_ylt=ArPIX0zer6Zzbe30Zr1YEQOQ2bYF
They must have some kind of plan. Kendall is a quality player but he's not getting any younger. I'm interested to see what Bender can do but my money is on the someone else option.
This draft we deep in gurad talent. It is a shame we gave away all our opportunites to infuse new, young, inexpensive talent into our OL.
He's a good mentor to our young lineman and solid, unspectactular player, but the Jets making a mistake by not giving him a new contract? He's under contract, and this is his last season starting for us. There is no need for renogotiations because he wants more money and from the rumors he's likely not an integral part of the coaching staff's future plans. Kendall will either be cut or play this season for 1.7 Mil, regardless will likely be his final season as a Jet.
Assuming he plays for the Jets he's really likely to have his best season in several years. That's what a contract year does to people. He's 33 years old, smallish and not a pro bowl caliber player. That tells me the Jets should have somebody else in mind for 2008 if not sooner.
I dont see us paying him 1.7 million this season. Thats just too much for an aging undersized player.
Well if he's REALLY motivated he might well be better than anything else the Jets can find right now. Adrian Jones might give him a run for his money if they were pitted against each other for that job, however Kendall playing at absolute peak is better than what Jones can give I think.
How can you say that? Do you know the guy? Have you been inside the Jets clubhouse? It's silly to think that just because an offhand comment like that was made in an article. It could have just been the writer's opinion, or it could have been a leak by the team just so that they didn't look bad for cutting him.
The Jets are playing this smart. Kendall is well respected by the coaching staff, and it's my belief the Jets are planning to keep him...UNLESS....he starts missing the mandatory practices. But why would he choose to start losing money at his age? Kendall is no spring chicken, and has no leverage here. The Jets look at Pete Kendall as a guy who's very servicable as a player and is a good teammate with regards to being a helpful guy. No way they release him. Even if he's a "lockerroom lawyer", he's nowhere near as vocal and potentially disruptive to the Mangini regime as Mawae. Eventually, he will play the good soldier and continue to be a supportive and prideful teammate. For those who want to trade Kendall in a package for Faneca and pay all that dough, I don't see it at all. My feeling is the Jets are high on some of their own young guys and will keep building from within. At age 33 or 34, Kendall is 3 or 4 years too late to cash in on the recent cash infusion at the position. The Jets are playing this smart, and are saying all the right things about Pete to show their respect.
Good move on the Dolphins part to publicly express interest in trading for Kendall earlier this month. Regardless of whether anything comes of it... Kendall is seeing all the money other Guards are getting in this FA market, and internal dissension in a division rival is always welcome. I understand he's already missing voluntary workouts?
Heres the skinny........ Dolphins interested in Jets' Kendall By Jason Cole Sunday, May 6, 2007 2:10 am EDT The Miami Dolphins have contacted the New York Jets about the availability of guard Pete Kendall, whom the Jets were trying to trade before the draft. However, New York preferred not to trade Kendall to a team within the AFC East. Kendall and agent Neil Schwartz have been trying to renegotiate his contract with the Jets, hoping for a raise of approximately $1 million. Kendall, who has three years remaining on his Jets deal after restructuring it a year ago, is scheduled to earn $1.7 million this year. Kendall has been unhappy with his contract since seeing the sharp rise in free-agent deals for interior linemen this offseason. Among the guards who will earn more than $6 million after signing new contracts are Kris Dielman with San Diego, Derrick Dockery with Buffalo and Eric Steinbach with Cleveland. Kendall, 33, is an 11-year veteran and was a first-round pick by Seattle in 1996. He has also played for the Cardinals.
i love how because the browns and bills overpaid for their FA guards that means we have to give Kendall a pay increase in order to keep him, total BS!
Seriously. On top of that, Kendall's not in the same league as Steinbach or Dielman. Seriously dude, you signed the contract just last season. Show you're committed to the team or stop being a pussy and ask for a trade/to be cut.
I honestly think he's a little better than some of you are giving him credit for. But be that as it may, at a 1 million pay increase - he's still at less than half of those blockbuster 6 million/year deals, right? Randy Mueller originally drafted Kendall to the Seahawks in 96, and I'm sure he'd love to have Pete around to mentor the two new Guards he selected in the draft last month (Sampson Satele, Drew Mormino). Sounds like the Jets have definitely ruled out trading him within the division though.
I don't get the idea of this tread at all. He is under contract for 2007. Why should we offer him anything? Does anybody actually believe he has more then one year left anyway? If he wants to sit out he will retire at home then.
Well if he's under contract for 2007 and 2008 there may be nothing to do but replace him if he's disgruntled. Veteran leadership cuts two ways and he's already left one place because he flopped the wrong way when push came to shove. The Jet's offensive line woes over the last 5 or 6 years are amazing given the amount of talent that has passed though here: 2000 - Elliot, Jenkins, Mawae, Thomas, Fabini 2001 - Fabini, Jenkins, Mawae, Thomas, McKenzie 2002 - Fabini, Machado, Mawae, Thomas, McKenzie 2003 - Fabini, Szott, Mawae, Smith, McKenzie 2004 - Fabini, Kendall, Mawae, Moore, McKenzie 2005 - Fabini, Goodwin, Kendall, Moore, Jones 2006 - Ferguson, Kendall, Mangold, Moore, Clements I keep thinking that really good teams find a way to get their offensive lines synced for a few seasons. Over the last 7 seasons the Jets have turned over 1 to 3 slots on the line every year. And we wonder why the Jets offense has been so middling over that period.
