What if? Lions get Vilma, 19 pick, 63 pick. Titans get 25 pick, Justin McCareins, Mike Williams Jets get the 2 pick. Bad trade? I have no idea other than I prefer depth.
I would do that trade in a second without even thinking, and seems pretty fair for everyone involved. I love Vilma as much as anyone, but the fact remains that he just doesn't fit in the 3-4. Hobson and Barton can fill in the middle, and maybe Schlegal can step up and be a backup. Calvin Johnson would bring the offense to a level that would make them IMMEDIATE AFC contenders. Plus, they can then get their OG in round 2 like Beekman or Ramirez, and then a CB like Jonathan Wade in round 3.
The Lions would have to value Vilma as the 8/9 pick to make it happen. Possible but it seems like a stretch.
He was a hell of a college football player in a big time program. http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/stories/MYSA040606.1C.FBClam.jones.cancer.96be6c4.html
Right, there aren't too many 6-5, 230lb wideouts around that can run a 4.3 and jump 40+ inches. Vilma, #25, and #63 for Johnson would be a great trade
I'm thinking it would have to be the 59. I'm also thinking this trade does not need to get made until the 19 pick is up so it might be a fall-through idea for the Lions if nobody else makes a big play for Johnson before that. Of course it's all BS. Millen is under such heavy scrutiny in Detroit that he can't afford any risk-taking at this point.
You're right. I thought he didn't start football until his junior year. He was still a better track star the football player. That was in the days when everybody wanted track stars on their team. From Bob Hayes to Edwin Moses..others who I forget now.
Ernie Sims last year at 8 or 9 to DET......and Vilma is and will always be the better player than Sims, so it's possible.......wait, the Lions? Matt Millen? Anything is possible with them.......
He was a track star and basically just started playing football in college and got better an better. I remeber when we drafted him the buzz was off the charts. I also remeber in a preseason game talking a litte hook over the middle and blowing away the entire D for a score. I was so pumped it was awesome. CJ looks like the real deal and I'm sure with the right team he is going to be an absolute home run player but look around the NFL guys like Gates and Davis bring the same scarry skill sets to the table. The NFL has guys like Steve Smith, Tory Holt, Randy Moss and a few other dominating WR who while elevating their teams have not been the key to their teams success. Our team is going to win by building a dominating D, we simply are not built on O to exploit the talents of a quick strike weapon and win outdoors in bad weather.
You da man. I want that defense first. I've seen the Jets try to win with O first and that hasn't worked since 1969.
Gates and Davis play different positions than Johnson, but I suppose comparing their ball skills and size is not absurd. I would disagree that Smith is not the key player on the Panthers. He is only 1/22 of the starting lineup, but he is the most important one. He was the chief reason they won their last playoff game. They lost the following week in large part because Seattle shut him down. WR is not one of the top 5 positions on a team. It is rare that a WR is the most important player on a team.
Smith clearly is a key player on the Panthers but they lost in the playoffs in 05 because they couldn't stop the Seahawks running game and they couldn't run the ball.
I remember draftniks saying the same kind of thing about Mike Williams when he tried to declare early. He was going to 'change the game as we know it'. Robert Gallery was a 'once in a lifetime opportunity'. This pre-draft scouting hype is horrendous sometimes. Let the guy take a single snap as a pro before you start with this nonsense.
