The Jets couldn't stop the run for their life last year and had a pretty poor running game offensively. They couldn't sack anybody without sending 7 guys after the QB. There are a bunch of guys with 25th pick talent that could rectify one of more of these issues and yet 75% of the talking head mocks have us getting a one-dimensional TE (who cannot block well) or a fumble-fingered CB with our first pick. I understood the problem when it was just Kirwan. He's one of the big reasons the Jets collapsed in the 90's. Now everybody seems to think the Jets are going to jump all over themselves to go into next season still weak against the run, with no more effective a pass rush and still with questions on the o-line. Argh.
I read today where a number of GMs are all saying that there are only 17 players deserving of being first round picks. Why the hell don't we just get rid of it or move up to get somebody that is worth it. (we are probably trying but that won't be easy)
Greg Olsen maight just be the best player available at the 25 spot. If he is available I would be surprised if he is not the pick. He is one dimensional right now but that one dimension fills a big time need for the Jets. I'm not sure how I feel about Houston at 25 or the idea of a CB other than Revis at 25. There is more to the draft than the first round and the value seems to match our needs in the second. Spencer seems to be the only pass rusher that might be available at 25 and other than maybe Harrell there isn't another DL that is worth that spot. The first round should be about getting the best talent available, there are some needs that are bigger than others but really every position on the team can stand to be upgraded. I don't understand the love for Baker, the TE position can certainly be upgraded. Baker is a serviceable TE but not much more and there is no denying the fact that the offense could use some playmakers, Olsen fits that mold of a playmaker that can come right in and make a difference in Schotty's gameplan.
There is no love for Baker where it counts, in the FO. You can bet there will be another TE in camp this summer, if not drafted then a UFA.
Nice post, pretty much sums up how I feel except I am sure I want no part of Houston. Revis OTOH would be very sweet. I think it will be pretty busy around here next week....
I think this disinformation is fine. I'd bet that if we get to 25 and Olsen or Houston are our best options, than we'll try to trade down or take one of the big guards or D tackles like Harrell if we can't trade down. Let the mockers make a mockery of the draft, nobody's listening to them anyway...
There is plenty of respect for Baker in the organization.... there is just a matter of having a two headed monster thing at TE.... obviously none of you were watching the football games we played last year... when we were inside the 20 yard line of our opponents majority of the points end up a field goal.. now to me thas a big concern. they already addressed the runningback issue yes we do need a road grading line man but there will be one in the second.. so that only leaves a TE which they compare olsen too Shockey.. and if he is half as good as Shockey is with toughness then we will be good.. Theres something about miami players in general that spells toughness.. why do you think it is that instead of players training with there teams in offseason all miami players go back to miami!! That says something about the whole university.. When can not compete with teams Like INdy, Pats, Rams, Chargers etc. because all those teams have high flying offense... sometimes to beat a good offense you must come with a better offense... Why do you think mangini pulled that onsider in the bears game?? Because he knew we had to score points to be in the game not only points but Touchdowns.
I completely understand wanting to upgrade the TE position, although I think Baker is serviceable there. What I don't understand is why we would take a Doug Jolley clone to do it and why we would pass up players who will be much more impactful for the team as a whole. Just off the top of my head, players who could be at 25 who would help the Jets a lot more than Olsen: Anthony Spencer Paul Posluzny David Harris Justin Blalock Ben Grubbs Joe Staley Players I don't particularly like but who would be just as valuable as Olsen: Jarvis Moss Dwayne Jarrett (Coles is a major durability risk) Dwayne Bowe (ditto) Ryan Kalil (Guard and Mangold injury insurance - a great depth pick who would replace Kendall at left guard in a season) I mean it's not hard to find good value on the 25 whether you exercise the pick or trade down. Why we would go for a pass-catching TE who hasn't even demonstrated that he's elite at that is beyond me.
I agree, we couldn't score in the red zone if our lives depended on it. If Olsen is only one dimensional then that's fine because it is the dimension we need. To catch the ball over the middle when we need it. A lot of people have already said it but I will again. He could be the perfect h-back and that's what they may be looking at him to become.
I can understand if our FO wants to get a redzone threat, but if we take Olsen over Dwayne bowe, Sidney Rice, Meachem, or Dwayne Jarrett I will flip.......Olsen can't block anyway, so I would much rather get a big offensive weapon in the mold of a BIG WR like the ones above......they will have a much greater impact-especially longterm- because they all have the potential to be number 1 wr's......a much better thing to have than a 1 dimensional tight end who couldn't do half of the things as an offensive weapon that the other guys could
jarvis moss? so you think a guy that has failed two tests for marijuana AND is rumored to have done a radio interview from a college party while drunk is more valuable?
Honestly if they didnt select Olsen id be cool with it they could take Anthony Spencer or who ever!!! I just think that people saying oh he sucks is just crazy.. then things he could help our offsense do specially with chads arm strength a dump off spot for him only maybe 5-15 yards down field is great keeps the chains moving..
Actually I said just as valuable, not more valuable. And I really don't like Jarvis Moss but I'd rather have a potential impact player on defense than a guy I think will be non-impact for the Jets. If the Jets were looking to take a guy that might catch 60 balls for them and stretch the field a bit I'd have a different point of view, but projecting Olsen to do that is like projecting D-Rob to have Warren Sapp's sack totals: you just can't find the evidence anywhere.
I aggree if we pass on olsen and go with a TE then yes get a big tall receiver who creates mismatches all day
I would love a pass rusher as well like Anthony Spencer... I just wish we had more then one draft pick in the first.
