The fact that there is no clear cut worthy 1st round pick at 25, the Jets can choose anyone in this range (still available obviously) yet there is a odd feeling that no one knows where to go at #25. This is the most confusing 1st pick I've seen as a Jet fan. I haven't been on this planet for too long... Has there been a time where there wasn't a surefire pick at whatever spot the Jets were. Never mind screwing up the pick, but you didn't know who was the best suited for the Jets 1st rd position?
I have been saying this for months. This is not unusual to have such a crap draft class. It happens every couple of years. I hope and still hope we trade down. It would be too expensive to trade up especially because of how weak the first round is. Problem is nobody else will want to trade up with us for mediocrity either.
I agree. From about pick 15 all the way down to pick 40 or so, there's talent that is usually the top-to-middle of the second round. That's why I'm glad that Tanny expressed that they had a lot of players they're interested in; they can trade down and still grab one of those guys if it comes down to it.
Personally, I feel every year is like this. There are 5-8 prospects that everyone loves, then it's a crap shoot. I remember the year we traded up for DRob, Bradway cited this as a reason they traded up. I don't think that measn this is a crappy draft class at all - it's just the way it is.
Well the thing is that usually there's a clear cut top 30 (with the top 5-10 being "can't miss") or so who are a clear step above the rest and who look like they can make an immediate impact at skill positions. This year there's only about 15 or so of them and then after that you get into guys who all have a decently large amount of question marks. In most drafts, Dwayne Jarrett's speed would make him a mid second rounder, Olsen's lack of production would put him in the mid-to-late second, Blalock and Grubbs would be mid-to-late seconds because of the position they play, and so forth. I will note that there's a lot more value in this draft for a 3-4 team then there is for a 4-3 team. People who look like undersized DEs to a 4-3 team are being looked at as potential monsters in the 3-4 defense.
The other problem, of course, is that these people in the second half of the first round are still going to insist on first round money even though they may not deserve it. I can see this being a year where negotiations go on a long long time. Maybe a couple won't even get signed at all.
This may be the draft year where Mr.T, Terry, and Joey Clinks' intelligence will be tested. They better make a awesome move, because its only progress from here on out since the goodness of last year.
I don't care who says it's a poor class- there are plenty of guys that work well for the Jets. We are in perfect position to take the best guard in the draft, or the best TE, or Spencer who may be the best 3-4 pass rusher. If not, there are CB's who are worthy of the pick, and several tweeners who have a good value to a 3-4 team, but not a good overall value. A guy like Woodley may last into the 5th round if every team played the 4-3 but he will most likely be gone after 2 rounds. We are fine- we can get guys for our system no problem.
