Where is all the hype for this year's draft? I mean, its a week from today, but other than the "On the Clock" segment on SportsCenter, no one is talking about the draft. Is it the Reggie Bush effect? Is it that our pick is 19 picks later this year than last? Even though our pick is later that doesn't detract from its importance. What's the deal?
The hype has gotten short-circuited by the questions surrounding all of the top 5 type players except for Calvin Johnson. Nobody knows what to make of JaMarcus Russell so it's hard to hype him. Brady Quinn is either the 2nd or up to 9th best value in the draft so there's no hype there. Adrian Peterson's injury history will prevent him from going until the 5th through 8th pick so that hype source is gone. Alan Branch is dropping like a stone as teams get scared of everything from his temperament to his possible injuries (never missed a down at Michigan, literally) to his terrible break-dancing techniques. Makes him not very hypable. Gaines Adams is suffering from Mario Williams disease, the primary symptoms of which are extreme lack of sexiness in the pick coupled with probably top 5 value and the feeling somebody will make a mistake and take him even higher. And to top it all off there is no Reggie Bush-like player with just ridiculous potential and a can't miss label. It's an ugly draft. The last one this ugly was the 1997 draft and it produced 2 likely hall of famers in Orlando Pace and Walter Jones. Both offensive linemen, which is why it was so ugly going in.
There is no question this year's draft is much more low-key, compared to last year. First, the quality of the talent, especially Rd 1, is lower than last year. I was commenting back in December that this year's senior class is one of the worst in many years. Last Year we had Bush, Young, Leinhart and the Cutler Buzz. The draft is still very popular, but the drama of last year isn't evident. Maybe we will have some trades this week to add some excitment.
I agree WW, there area a lot less huge names in this class, but that to me makes for a lot of excitement. A lot of things could go down on draft day, and maybe even in this week leading up to the draft, that we don't even see possible right now.
As a UK Jets fan can you tell me where, apart from Gang Green, is the best website or internet radio station to watch/hear the draft on?
I agree as well. I saw a pretty cool commercial on during the Lakers/Suns game yesterday for the NFL draft. It was in black and white and had someone's mock draft on a cork board and some guy was moving names around on it. There isn't very much buzz shy of the following: What the Raiders do and the effect it'll have on the rest of the draft. We know if they pass on CJ then the Lions are gonna take a lot of offers. Will Miami trade up to get in front of Minnesota and Cleveland for Brady Quinn? Will AP break into the top three or will he free fall as far as the Texans? Will the Packers try to move up to get him? And of course... most importantly: Who will the Jets draft? After the above questions... this draft is more about building depth for a lot of teams and thus, not a lot of drama.
I wasn't sure wheather it was convertin the time for me or not. That will be great 5pm on friday , Tea and crumpets during the draft
