D-Rob was getting run through for a lot of the season. The really nasty chunks of yardage that we gave up were usually right up the gut.
This is true, but you can never have enough big bodies in the middle. Most of these guys are going to be filling a two down role. Robertson might need a blow. -X-
And haven't we discussed that for the most part the run D's struggles were runs off tackle to Kimo's side and that D rob maintained his gap and caused disruption consistently throughout the entire 2nd half of the season? I know you would like to see D rob use a "2 gap" mentality alittle more consistently, but c'mon, why, anytime the run d struggles is it all on D rob? the guy maintains his gap, makes plenty of plays, and collapses at the point of attack...what more do you guys expect?
Getting a NT for depth is a good idea, but Drobs play at NT is not the problem we have with our line or our run defense. By the end of the year, he was very very good at NT.
I voted other too... I love Okoye, but he'll be gone...just like I love Ngata last year. I vote Simone Pouha - he was really progressing last camp when he got hurt.
Started charting every play on ESPN.COM and will continue when I find the hours. Got through game 6 complete and this is what the numbers were: Left side - 59 rushes, 259 yds, 3 TD Left side rushes over 5 yards (15) - 9, 14, 14, 7, 15, 7, 10, 6, 12, 11, 8, 10, 6, 6, 6 Middle - 77 rushes, 326 yds, 6 TD Middle rushes over 5 yards (22) - 6, 7, 6, 32, 9, 7, 16, 6, 9, 6, 13, 6, 6, 14, 13, 9, 7, 12, 8, 8, 6, 7 Right - 52 rushes, 277 yds, 3 TD Right rushes over 5 yards (19) - 14, 6, 12, 6, 8, 7, 7, 11, 8, 9, 18, 9, 6, 11, 6, 6, 9, 9, 26 Ok, the conclusions through 6 games are that the Jet's run D blows chunks as it has allowed 959 yards and 12 TD and 56 runs of 6 yards or more. The opponents are hitting the middle harder than either side individually, however they're spreading the pain around. The myth that people are running all over KVO and leaving D-Rob and Ellis untouched is exactly that, a myth. In fact KVO is holding his own as well as any of them, which is to say not very... BTW I want to add that based on the chart you should only use the depth chart on ESPN as a rough approximation of where people lined up for the Jets last season. It's pretty clear that KVO was on the right side of the defense a lot (left side rushes) and that Ellis was on the left side of the defense a lot (right side rushes) but the linebackers have tackles all over the place. It looks a lot like Thomas lined up on the left side of the defense (right side rushes) on rushing downs and then went to the right side (left side rushes) in passing situations. To give you an example Thomas has 15 tackles on the left side of the defense (right side rushes) and only 6 tackles on the right side of the defense (left side rushes.) I only charted rushes though so his play on passing downs is not represented. Hobson on the other hand has 8 tackles on the right side of the defense (left side rushes) and only 4 on the left side of the defense (right side rushes.) Up the middle Thomas has 7 tackles and Hobson has 1.
based on yrds per carry left 4.3 center 4.2 right 5 something Center is not the biggest problem but yes anything over 4 is a problem
If you had to come to a conclusion based on what we're seeing in just the first 6 games, which is misleading, it would be something like this: Mediocre - Vilma, Barton, Thomas (on the weak right side but making a ton of tackles compared to some) Poor - KVO, D-Rob Terrible - Ellis, Hobson (on the less weak left side but making very few tackles)
you're still trying to make robertson look like the worst pick in nfl history. dude, stop it already. the media, the majority of the fans, we're all happy with the way d-rob played last season. he was one of the best and most valuable players on our team last season.
I still say the cheapest and biggest NT that could pay HUGE dividends is Walter Thomas. A 3-4 needs to have a BIG NT to plug the middle and this kid may be raw but he is BIG. A fifth round pick for a chance at a true NT, not one of these 295-305 tweener is worth the investment. Numbers say it all, 6-4 and 370 lbs. We paid two 1st rounders and a 4th for Robertson who is a bust, why not just a late round pick for Thomas?
D-Rob is getting better every season. Its' not totally about replacing D-Rob, its' about adding more depth & if Jets' can groom an upgrade.....so be it.
Jets' have pretty much addressed that position thru F.A. They could also possibly draft a DE. But an upgrade or more quality depth at NT is definitely necessary for Jets' to advance to next level & get past Pats'.
D-Rob is a good player, but gets pushed back a few yards whenever he is double teamed. A real no-no for a NT ?:breakdance:
1. Many experts, fellow jet players, posters on this board, and even Jets front office members have on more than one occassion stated that D rob was most likely our best player in the front 7 this past season. Yes at the beginning of the year he struggled, as did most of the defense, but year's end, he was a VERY good player in the scheme.Watch the tape...It's about more than being a "Big NT" 2. Just b/c a guy is 370 lbs, doesnt mean he's the absolute answer at NT. You need to have strength, technique, awareness and conditioning in order to succeed as a 3-4 NT. Now I like him as a prospect, but he will need at least 2 years before he is ready to even THINK about being the player you are projecting him to be. 3. There is no quick fix at NT. The prototype NT like Jamall Williams and Vince Wilfork only come around once every 3 years. And w/ that said, by year's end, D rob performmed almost as well, and brought some elements that the other 2 could never even THINK of providing. I'm all for bringing in better depth at NT. If somebody unseats D rob w/ quality play..by all means..that's great for the franchise. But for one, we can do a whole lot worse than d rob, and secondly, there are no quick fixes at that spot.
Good points....NT's play better when they have quality DE's next to them. Put Tank Tyler next to D-Rob & offenses will have to run to Ellis's side...
In all honesty, I think that Coleman's gonna be good for us this year. He was stuck behind 2 first rounders in Dallas who the 'Boys needed to justify picking. On top of that, at least one guy out of all the other guys we signed this offseson will inevitably step up to help create a good rotation between the ends. However, grabbing NT depth in this draft with a late round gamble is fine by me. This draft is just terrible in 3-4 NT talent up top. D-Rob did a fine job last season for us towards the end, but I'd still like to see if we can grab someone who can step in there so we can take more advantage of D-Rob's speed at end.
