Assuming the Jets do their homework and are not concerned about Kris Jenkin's injury history, how much should we be willing to give up for him? Our 2 biggest needs are DT and OL (maybe CB). Getting a DT is far more important than improving our running game through the O-Line. If you cant stop the run, you have no chance, but you do have a somehwat of a chance with a limited running game on offense. Now we all know there really are going to be no DT's worth taking at 25, branch and Okoye will be long gone. Thefore, I feel our best shot is taking Blaylock at 25 and then give up some picks for Jenkins. How much should we be wiling to give up? A second? or second and 5th? Does anyone have any guesses also as to what the panthers think his trade value is? It is very difficult to say. A few seasons ago he was the considered to be the premeir DT in the league. Then, he had two injury plagued seasons, but then bounced back last season for a solid, but defenitely unspectacular year. Does anyone else feel we really need to trade for Jenkins? As an alternative, I also don't think taking a DT in the 2nd or later rounds would be wise, considering its one of the hardest positions to learn and no non 1st round pick will really have any sort of a shot at making an impact in year 1, but we need impact now, for this season, because we could not stop the run at all last season.
I'd give up a 5th or lower. This guy is pretty big and if Mangini and Co. can coach him up then we've found our road grater.
I think the winner will give up a 4th. and we dont have a 4th and we havent looked at him yet. So I dont see us winning. for some goofy reason the staff is happy with our DT. if we got a DT I rather get a guy we can groom for future years as Drob's cap hit is disgusting next yr(9-12 mil). Not that many can start over Robertson and is Jenkins really that much better than Drob? We would probably have to redo Jenkins deal also. does anyone know his base salaries for the next 3 years? I am sure the contract was backloaded.
The coachign staff is very high on Dewayne Robertson at NT. Here's the thing, it normally takes 2 or 3 years for a DT to start to do well at the NT position, hence Ted Washington and Sam Adams seem to fill in for those first couple of years while someone else learns the spot. Dewayne played NT right from the beginning last year and struggled early on. By the end of the year he was playing good (not great) at the NT spot. The real problem on our line was Kimo, who either fell on his ass or was easily pushed 5 yards down field on post plays, and hopefully we've solved that with Coleman. Now if Kenkins came for a 5th or 6th round pick, sure I'd do it, you can never have enough depth, though he really doesnt fit the system. However, I do not think we need to go out and waste high picks on him.
If his cap hit is that high you can be sure he will restructure or be long gone. So we should try and find a true NT no matter how raw he is and hope for the best. Unless, of course, Mangini realizes we don't have the right players for the 3-4 and goes back to the 4-3. In that case the options are easier in just finding a DT.
usually when you are traded you restructure----just look at the facts or Salary Cap 101. when traded the new team doesnt pay the signing bonus from original contract but the player wants to keep those backloaded yrs as salary. the new team can cut the player at NO COST. So they convert the base salaries to signing bonues and whats great about signing bonuses(you get the money up front). but the Jets wont go after jenkins and when he is traded he will restructure(but noone knows his deal, which I tried to look up) its backloaded and I am sure he wants a restructure when he goes to new team this team is going in 3-4 mode I dont see us changing to 4-3 just because of us signing Jenkins by some miracle. Look at every FA we signed the last 2 yrs in the front 7. Chatham, Kassel, Bowens, Coleman, Kimo, Hamilton, and the SF guy that was a waste, and others these are all 3-4 signings. We were hybrid last yr but it doesnt take a magic wand then boom you are 3-4, it takes 2 to 3 yrs. same if you are changing to 4-3. thats what killed the Jets after 2001 we were 3-4 then in changed to 4-3 and finnally were perfect then back to 3-4 we kept Ellis as DE, Hobson as OLB and Vilma as ILB and Robertson as DT I think Ellis fits. but the others are on a 1 yr trial(but isnt all of the NFL on a one yr trial) plus the other 3 are going to be playing for contracts we have moved Barton to ILB and B Thomas to OLB they look good there We signed alot of FA's in the front 7 but we never found a 3-4 DT(that is the hardest thing to find in the 3-4) there arent that many avialable. will we ever find one? I think robertson is the best bet unless you want the Gilbert Browns of the world.
Exactly. Altough I think D-Rob would be a monster as a 3-4 DE, looks like we wont be seeing that tho.
It should sound more like this. "had pro bowl ability" Not only does he not fit the 3-4, he is past his prime and on the way down. This guy has 1 or 2 more solid seasons left, if that.
drob is not a 3-4 player, neither is vilma or ellis..dare I say is anyone? mangini needs to suck it up and realize we don't have the personnel for it. either go back to the 4-3 or get rid of all of them and bring in players who are.
He had a great season last year, and was also great 2 years ago during our playoff run. I've been saying it all offseason, and it continues to be proven trueeople are basing the need or lack of at NT based solely on size. Jenkins and D rob are both very similar players. At his peak, few will ignore that Jenkins is the better player. However, both are better fits in a 4-3 front, and are most successful at shooting gaps. The difference between the 2, is for one, height(makes a huge difference in terms of leverage) and secondly Jenkins is quick/more athletic, while D rob is stronger and more powerful. What that means is this: D rob is able to get better leverage on interior linemen and hold his ground better(which is the most important thing at 3-4 NT)when you factor in his more compact size and better overall strength. Jenkins would like struggle holding his ground in a 3-4 and would be way too tall to play NT, limiting him to 3-4 DE..where there'd be a major adjusting period especially for a guy w/ injury problems.
the team was 24th against the run last year, you and I have different ideas of what a "great" season is
you can look at Van Oldslobbin and Vilma for that too. 61 tackles and 2.5 sacks. thats amazing for a NT. 2nd half of the season he was our best player on d and if not a close second behind kerry rhodes. we definitely lack depth at DT. but d-rob performed better than any other DL on the team last yr.
He played as well at the nose as he did in other years. Part of that was more plays coming up the middle. He sill isn't a bonafied nose tackle and will continue to play out of position in a 3-4. Mangini played a lot more 4-3 in the second half of the season which also added to his tackle total. I think they should just go back to it full time as I said earlier. At least until they have the right players for the 3-4.
