A friend of mine is a big time Iggles fan. Apparently it came to his attention that "Gang Green" was originally used as a nickname for the Eagles D of the late 80's, and has since been stolen by the Jets. He's insisting that the Eagles are the ORIGINAL GANG GREEN! This can't possibly be true, can it?! hmy:
http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/whereAreTheyNowDetail.jsp?id=37454 I thought I've heard them mentioned years ago as Gang Green. Thanks for twiking my memory.
It's untrue. Gang Green was used by the new york media for the Jets in the late 70's and early 80's. It kind of morphed from "gangrene" as in 3-11 to Gang Green as in 11-5. The "sack exchange" was a big part of "gang green" in 1981.
By reading the article, It seems that the writer was speaking of the "Gang Green" defense of 1991. I believe Mike Golic was on that team, and if the Eagles were really known as that I am sure he would say something to Mike Greenberg on the radio everytime BGreeny refers to the Jets as Gang Green. Google has a couple of references to the Eagles "Gang Green" defense with Reggie White, but the Franchise never held that moniker.
I've always thought it's a pseudo slur for the Jets, because of the ganggrene inference. "Jets" works just fine for me.
Well they stole our Chant. (After we stole it) E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles! Now they want Gang Green too? Yeah, ok!
yeah i think a saw something in wikepedia.com on the matter they did say they were the gang green from late 80's to 91 lead by Reggie White. What if we named the Jets Green Machine....
Yep,10 Year old thread bump So it looks like the Iggles are once again trying to coopt the Gang Green nickname
The Eagles D was refereed to as gang green due to their faces turning green from the choke job they put out on the field every week. It was an insult.
