Well why no the Yankees have a Mr. October (we all know who RJ)
a Mr. November(DJ) A Mr. May (DW) so a Mr. April would be fitting then theyd just need a MR. june thru Sept.

Mantle yes, Ruth debatable. 50 years from now he may well be looked at as the best player ever.

The statement was that ARod is "the Greatest Yankee ever."

The implication made by the comment was that ARod is the epitome of "being a Yankee." It was not implied that he is the best player of all time in that statement.

Arguing whether he is the greatest player ever is moot right now either way. He's got at least another decade of ballplaying to decide that. (Do I think he will? Of course I do, even if he weren't a Yankee, but that's not the argument here.)

In the context of the comment, no, ARod is not what was described. Ruth saved baseball. Mantle could have easily been MUCH better had he put down the drink, and yet he was still beloved, and a key to titles. Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mattingly, Jeter, Munson. All these names are steeped in that "Yankee Mystique."

Talent-wise, he's the best player to ever don a major league uniform, bar none. In terms of his "Yankeeness," (which I can't believe I even got myself roped into a discussion about,) he's not on the level of guys like Ruth or Mantle, not even close.

What is Mattingly being mentioned for? He is the biggest loser ever to don the pinstripes.

    What is his "Mystique"?

I don't think even A-Rod got the kind of abuse that Mantle got for years before the HR chase with Maris. He wasn't considered a "true Yankee" until the second half of his career, in his prime he was basically just the guy that replaced DiMaggio.

Mattingly is arguably the most beloved player to ever play for the Yankees.

And as I clearly pointed out in the GYC thread, Mattingly's career numbers were better than the great Keith Hernandez.

    Happy now?

You make a very good point. But again, as of right now, is ARod the "greatest Yankee ever?"

I think the obvious answer is no.

Keith won 2 Rings. The benchmark for greatness according to you.

Mattingly to Hernandez is like Jeter to Arod.

One is a "winner", one never won jack. Not "clutch" enough.

But I agree that Arod could be one of the best players ever. Top 3 anyway. He should have the HR record and smash the RBI record if he sticks around. He won't need the money so who knows. I doubt he will be the greatest though because he would need a BA in the .330 -.340 range for that and he won't be close.

He should be in the conversation, but too many Yankee fans dislike him, which keeps him out of it. Same with Mantle pre-1961.

That's pretty obvious. How could he be after only two years? He would have to be here at least 10 to even enter the conversation.
