Last year was the only year Chad Pennington started 16 games in a season. 2000- was a rookie, Vinny started all 16 games, only played in 2 games 2001- 2nd year, Vinny started all 16 games, only played in 2 games 2002- first start was week 5 vs kansas city...led us to the playoffs and started all the games 2003- got hurt in the preseason vs the giants...came back vs the eagles in week 8 2004- got hurt in week 9 vs buffalo...missed 3 games and quincy carter came in 2005- got hurt vs jacksonville...missed the rest of the season in games chad pennington starts we are 31-23 other jets qbs since chad penningtons first start...6-16 so will he start all 16 games this year...or will he go down with an injury or with kellen clemens get a crack at the starting lineup
If he plays well and dosen't get injured, he'll start all 19 games. Injury or crap play and he'll be riding pine. I'm gonna guess no though, Chad won't start every game.
It's a hard call. So much is going to depend on the quality of protection that he gets in the passing game and on how well the running game does. If the Jets have solid pass protection and can run to setup the pass then he has a shot at playing all 16 games. If either of those elements are not present then it's very dicey. I'm in the camp that says that if the Jets had resigned Randy Thomas in 2003 and kept that good offensive line together that Chad might never have had any of the injuries he's suffered to date. He might have gotten hurt anyway but playing behind iffy lines in 2003 and 2005 really set the stage for his career to be an injury plagued one.
Contrary to Johnnys opinion I think Chad starts barring injury, period. Watching Chad last year in the pocket and on the move I had the feeling he was a little more confident physically and seemed to keep his limbs more under control. Toward the end of the season I actually remained calm watching Chad scramble a little bit--whereas before my heart would stop. With a good bit of R & R and a full offseason of serious training I believe Chad will maintain that confidence and start all 16 games. Also, I am so excited about Mangold as our center.
Well normally I am a nay-sayer but I think yes he will do it, I will rule out crappy play because he is healthy and will be able to have a great off season, maybe the bouts of bad luck are over
It's pure speculation whether or not Pennington will start all 16 games or not. What is much more important is if Kevin Clemens is going to be an elite NFL QB at some point in the next year or two.
I agree w/ the overall concept of your post, except for the part about Randy Thomas. Thomas was a great leader and a force at pulling/getting to the 2nd level in the running game, but he often struggled against big strong bull rushers and powerful blitzers(It was one of the team's shortcomings in those playoff games against Oakland). Additionally, although it would've been nice to resign him...Washington made him the highest paid guard in the NFL at that time, and I dunno bout you, but for a guy that up until that point had never even sniffed a pro bowl(and hasnt since) that would've been a pretty high price to pay., and wuld've set us back cap wise even more than we had already been at that point.
The problem is that a converted defensive tackle, Brandon Moore, was standing in the RG spot when Micheal Barrow blew by him and broke Chad's wrist in the pre-season in 2003. Whether or not Randy Thomas was worth the contract he received is really neither here not there. When the heart of the offense gets badly injured because you don't have him standing in the way of a blitzing linebacker in the preseason then it indicts the entire process that created that event. Guards get ridiculous contracts every year it seems and then the following year the contract is now a standard. Losing the cohesiveness on the offensive line is much worse than paying though the nose for a year or even two to maintain protection. In 2005 it was the tackles that broke down mainly because a good young tackle, again not an all-pro but a good player, had gotten signed away and the cupboard was bare once Fabini began to disintegrate. The Bradway regime, and I'm not going to include Herm because I don't know if he had any pull in the decisions, badly undervalued consistency and coherence on the offensive line. The results have been that Chad has played behind an ever shifting facade that too often had a crack or two in it. Chad has had one really good offensive line to work with, the 2002 version that had Fabini, Szott, Mawae, Thomas and Elliot holding the line. The 2004 line is the next best with Fabini, Kendall (phew blind luck there on the Jun 1st release), Mawae, Moore (a year of on the job training now) and McKenzie. And 2006 was probably the 3rd best line, although weaker than the other two by quite a bit.
Sad there is a thread on this. The answer is simple and everyone knows it. If he plays well and is injury free he will start all 16 games this season and into the playoffs. I believe he will do this.
I don't think Clemens will beat him out this year, so if healthy I think he will start all the games. I no longer have any real injury concerns with Chad. His shoulder held up last year, and he took a number of big hits on it. Of course, he could get injured, but so could anybody.
That is an important question. In the couple of chances he had last year he looked scared to death in the pocket. Of course that doesn't mean much because of when he came in but I would like to see him play at least an entire half in preseason this year. As far as Pennington, if he survived last year he should be ok this year. Of course nobody can predict injuries. The one thing that may work against him is the expectations of the fans. If the Jets start losing a lot of games, which is possible with the schedule they have, the fans may be calling for his head. If that happens it will be interesting to see how Mangini responds.
I am going to say that whether or not he plays 16 games will not depend on his health but on his play. He is pretty well removed from the shoulder injuries and the fact that he was not injured last season allowed him to rehab a seemingly unhurt shoulder even further. I don’t think there has ever been a question of Chad’s heart, pride or desire. The real question is if he can step up his play and if not how long the current coaching regime can accept mediocrity from the QB. This will also be largely dictated by how effective the coaching staff is in raising the level of play of the rest of the team; its been well documented that Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson played on teams that won superbowls…I’ll stop short of saying that Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer won superbowls.
Actually it was Brent Smith who gave up that sack in the preseason, not Moore. I totally agree about the Bradway era not putting enough importance on OL cohesion, talent, and overall depth. Brent Smith was a joke at RG, and Szott was a quick fix that fell apart relatively quickly. At several points in past drafts, we had opportunities to add quality linemen that presented value and had upside, and we passed to overload on the safety position. We pretty did the same thing in FA either ignoring the position completely or settling on cheap deterriorating talent like Scott Gragg and Dave Szott. We are starting to make up for that now, but there was a 2 year period, we paid the price for all the malnurishment at the OL position.
The only way chad doesn't start all 16 games is if clemens beats him out, he won't get hurt this season.
With all the variables that can happen to a pro football player this is a very stupid thread. Allentown Ernie.
