Anybody else see the interview? Seems like a very intelligent, well-grounded guy. Spent the last five years building a church and launching a business. He also sounds like he really believes he can do this. Marshall Faulk says if he does come back, he will be a monster, but it really hasn't been successfully done before. Faulk say, "Guys think they can do it, but when they hit training camp, they realize how fast the game really is and how slow they've become." Time will tell, but if his knees hold up, I'm thinking his desire, intelligence and emotional maturity can carry him onto the roster.
As much as I'm wanting the guy to succeed I think he'll be a training camp bust, maybe not right away but instead a week or two into it. I just can't see how he'll be able to keep up. That being said, I'd love to have our very own "Disney" story develop on the plains of Hempstead.
I totally agree with you....he's been out of the game too long. Would be great if he can do it though.....
He was probably one of the first guys to have microfracture surgery. It's not an easy injury. I will personally be very pleasantly surprised if he makes it beyond the first round of cuts. -X-
Question: Why is it that when someone is brought up as a good person, their religion and just how dedicated to it they are is always brought up? I'm going to root hard for Wadsworth. He sounds like he worked his ass off just to do this, and he's certainly not doing it for money. I really hope him and Haynes show something. I actually expect quite a bit from Haynes. He fits the profile of a 3-4 end to a T.
I think you guys are underestimating his skill and his will, along with the physical shape he is in. If he can stay healthy through training camp(granted that is a big if) I think he can carve out a pretty good niche on this team situationally.
Yes but I think we're separating "physical shape" versus "conditioning"- two very different things. Schwartzenegger [sic] was 100% muscle at one point, physically, outside of the roids of course, he was in great physical shape. However, one wonders if he was conditioned enough to run wind sprints up and down a football field over the course of 8 weeks- most likely not. Unless Wads was working out at a dedicated sports conditioning facility for an extended period of time, and not just riding the eliptical at his local Equinox gym, I see him as a camp casualty.
He also had a great interview last week on Sirius NFL Radio with the Late Hits crew. He sounded very happy and satisfied with his life. He said that his return to football isn't about the money, but for the love of the game and also just because he's getting older and this could be his last chance to play football again. He has had 15 surgeries he said.... I think he'll end up making the team somehow....
Have you ever tried to do something that you hadn't done in 5 years, especially at the intensity and level of the NFL...I wish the guy the best, but I just don't see him lasting through more than a week or two of camp.
I'm a sucker for stories like this. I really hope the guy makes the team and can contribute. The potential, however much a long shot, is through the roof. Sounds like a good guy to boot.
Interesting that he is trying out at OLB and not 3-4 DE. I thoiught w/ his size, he'd attempt to make it on the line.
Because it shows that you're principled, thoughtful, and making an effort to be a good person. Too often religion is cast as a bunch of evangelical yahoos in the Midwest falling all over the place. -X-
I dont know about him Contributing but maybe he'd be a great locker room pick up, and can teach the young kids something.
I don't think he really has any chance of making the team. I would be shocked if he did and it would be a nice story but realistically it's not going to happen.
I hate to say it but some religious people have been the most horrible people in the world at times. Sometimes people are just rotten, religion or not. And conversely, some people that don't practice or believe in religion are wonderful, good-hearted and good-natured people.
Im sure Mangini will tailor camp to fit an older guy whos been out of the league for 37 years. No way he's cut in the first week or two.
