lawrence timmons olb will probably be available at #25 when the jets pick.if so,and the jets pick him.that would make a lot of sense for the jets.they can move hobson inside to team with vilma and they can have thomas and timmons at outside linebacker.that sounds good to me.with the addition of kenyon coleman at d.e.the jets would have solved their missing pieces on their defensive line and linebacker.lets hear some input from my fellow jet fans.
I still do not think the Jets have a real good pass rusher on the roster. Teams that run a 3-4 really need a threat to work well. I don't care about all the draftniks ripping apart Quentin Moses, I still think that guy could be a force as a pass rusher. He'll be a 2nd, 3rd, or maybe a 4th round pick. If the Jets took Timmons in round 1, I would not have a problem with it so long as certain other players were not still available.
Timmons looks like a very strong OLB prospect at this point. Most of the mocks that I have seen, for what they are worth - which is not much, have him going somewhere from 15 (Steelers) to 21 (Broncos). I'd be thrilled if he dropped to the Jets and I bet they would be also. What they would do in terms of moving people around if they got him is not completely clear to me. They could cut or trade Eric Barton if he won't take a paycut. They could trade Jonathan Vilma if the right offer came their way. In either case they could move Hobson inside and flop Bryan Thomas to the strongside and play Timmons weakside. He is not going to be particularly effective early in his career if they just try to slot him in to Hobson's spot on the strongside. He's very much an edge player and a player that you do not want matched up against the right tackle on pass rushing downs.
Timmons is too small for OLB in the 3-4 at only 234 lbs. He'd fit as an ILB in the 3-4, but you need a bigger "tweener" for OLB, usually above 250 lbs. This is especially true in our case because the OLB will have to line up as a 4-3 DE in certain schemes as well with our "hybrid" defense. Someone like Anthony Spencer would fit loads better at that spot (261 lbs).
we would pick timmons if he was there, but i doubt he will be...i still think darrell revis or aaron ross is the pick though
I do believe that the Jets need an OLB that can rush the passer, but I don't think Timmons is that guy. He can play weakside in a 4-3 and probably be very good at it down the line, but he's not big enough to be a 3-4 rush LB, can't get away with the same things he did in college when you have NFL OTs going against him. It's usually a lot easier to find DE's that are athletic enough to learn how to cover well enough than it is to find LBs that can rush the QB, even though one would assume the opposite.
