If he's there, you can't pass him up. He won't dazzle with 40 times, bench, etc. Yet if you watch him play, he just has a nose for the ball. He played against faster D backs all year, including Leon Hall, in the Rose Bowl and torched all of them. He gets separation against all defenders. Deceptively strong with GREAT hands. And he's an NJ guy which works in his favor:grin:
This is football not track...if you prove yourself on the field, you're a football player...we don't need track stars...we don't need a TE that can run a 4.4 if he hasn't done anything on the field (a la Greg Olsen)...we need football players, ones that produce no matter what, just like dwayne jarrett
I think you have to have a little bit of an attitude to be a top reciever in this league. I also think a lot of that had to do with the fact that that's the kind of attitude that Pete Carroll promotes. He likes his players to play with a certain attitude and swagger to their game. I live in California and follow the USC program pretty closley and the majority of the players all have that same swagger. I don't think Jarrett would do those celebration dances and other stuff if he was on the Jets.
The question is whether it is the player or the players around him in that offense that make him look good
It's a valid question...i just don't think it's the case with him...i think he's just too good to pass up
no, hes not a fast reciever thatll be able to get past the big boys, if he goes to the second round. MAYBE
It would be really dumb to take him. If you are a team that has a lot of holes you pick by need, not value. We already have 2 excellent receivers and how important is it to get a 3rd wr compared to a guy who can help us stop the run or rush the passer?
That's called the drafting strategy of a loser. Jarrett would add so much to the offense it's not even funny. I love how everyone thinks because he doesn't run a 4.4 or a 4.5 that he won't be a deep threat, with Jarrett's size, leaping ability, and body control I think I'd take him in a deep ball matchup against a lot of the corners in the league right now. Last I checked, the Jets best receiver above 6 ft was Smith or McCareins, so I do think it's a bit of a need to add in a big WR of his caliber. Really, just think about it for a moment. Who would help more, a guy like Ted Ginn, who would add Big Play ability, but little else. He's certainly not better than Cotch/Coles at moving the chains, not in the red zone, and not running routes. Then you look at a guy like Jarrett, whose size alone gives us terrific options, not to mention he's one of the best red zone receivers college football has ever seen. With Cotchery just scratching the surface of his potential, I think it'd be a coupe to add a player like Jarrett to match up with him for a long time. By the way, I'd find it very hard to believe that the Jets would truly consider Dwayne Bowe, as talented as he might be, he's a Class-A asshole, and I mean that in the best way possible. Not to mention, I expect his learning curve to actually be the biggest of all the first round possible Wide Receivers.
Actually to be blunt I'd rather have Ginn, as we badly need a player with big play ability, who can also be our PR, the way you described Jarrett it sounded too much like Mike Williams too slow for a WR and too small for a TE, and if we are going for a red zone thread we may as well just pick Olsen a faster version of what you are talking about
It's not so much celebration dances as it is him thinking he's primetime, with his high stepping and holding the ball in front of the defenders. Any college coach, especially pete carrol shouldn't promote garbage like that. Saying that, you still have to take him at 25.
By saying one of the best red zone wideouts of all time that reminds you of Mike Williams? Williams failed because of the season off and a bad work ethic, Jarrett might be cocky, but no one ever questioned him working. Then you have a guy like Ginn who's had more than a few allegations of loafing when he saw his money coming up. Plus, when you talk about big plays, both Coles and Jerricho have that kind of ability. Sure, they aren't pure burners, but I do seem to remember Cotch taking one 80 yards vs the Pats, you don't need a 4.3 to run away from people. Then when you factor in our offense, what's the good of having a guy who'll be relegated to a couple deep passes a game, especially as a first round pick? If you want a burner/PR that bad, we can get a similar impact from Aundrae Allison in the 2nd round, you're not going to find a player like Jarrett later on. And if they seriously grabbed Olsen over Jarrett, they should just fold up shop, then again I know they won't because this front office knows what they're doing. A Constant Underachiever that can't block at tight end or a record setting wideout? Hmm...
I don't really think of Sidney as a possible first round pick, but I'd say his and Bowe's would be fairly similar. Bowe has to get over himself, Sidney needs to remember what got him all the hype after his freshman year. Both have potential to be studs, but I get the feeling both are going to be caught up trying to do too much early on in their careers.
What a lot of people dont understand is that Chad can throw a great deep ball. I dont know why more people dont see this because i know everyone here watches all the games as much as i do. But when scouts say Chad has no arm strength they arent talking about the 60 yard fly route...ive seen him throw that. They are talking about the 15 yard out route. He can't throw it with a lot of zip which is what that route needs. Explosive receivers can thrive with Chad on the deep ball.
Exactly. Penny gets a bad rap for the wrong things. If anything, the Jets don't air it out engough and take advantage of this. Penny's probably top 5 in giving a good deep ball to the reciever; very manageable to catch, he has a great eye for hitting guys in stride for the most part... ...he just can't throw that frozen rope, so our passing offense is for the most part either limited to < 10 yards or > 25 yards.
Ahh...I see what you're saying. I thought you were just alluding to the way he plays, but your right....he does have somewhat of a cocky attitude, but it's not really a problem considering some of the other headcases that have had success in this league. I don't think he's quite as bad a Chad Johnson, but even he was that wouldn't be too bad. Chad my talk a lot of trash, but he's generally a pretty good teammate and player on the field.
Good point. I don't know where the misconception that Chad can't throw a ball past 30 yards came from. Most kids playing highschool football can throw a ball at least 40-50 yards. The problem Chad has is throwing the ball with zip. You see guys like Carson Palmer who can muscle a ball in on a slant route, which is something Chad will not be able to do. However, he can still throw the deep ball. After all, all your doing is lobbing the ball up anyways...and that's what Chad is good at.
BTW, I forgot to put my input in in my last post. If Jarrett is there, you need to at least strongly consider him. I agree with Green Hurricane in that I think that he compliments our recievers very well at 6-4. Slow or not, he can go up and grab Chad's lobs with ease as well. He may not get many yards after the catch, but he's excellent in the red zone and can move the chains as well. Seriously, a tall reciever who can go up and grab the ball out of the air and who has great hands would be great for this offense. I'd be very happy if we grab Jarrett if he's there.
