Round 1: Darrelle Revis | CB | Pittsburgh (5-11, 204, 4.50) We need a cornerback opposite of Dyson. I just don't see someone like Josh Wilson in the 2nd round being any better than Justin Miller or Hank Poteat, at least this year. Revis has all the tools you would look for in a cornerback, and will be able to start and make an impact from the day he arrives in training camp. A polished, extremely skilled player who should form a wonderful combo opposite Dyson, and be groomed as our future #1. Round 2: Josh Beekman | OG | Boston College (6-1, 313, 5.39) Brandon Moore is just not good enough anymore. Beekman is the 3rd best OG in the draft this year and could come in and start immediately for us. Is the definition of a "Mangini guy"; he is smart, loves the game and a hard worker. He has wonderful technique that does not need much refinement. Should be very solid along our young offensive line, and be able to hold the spot next to Nick Mangold for years to come. Round 2: Aundrae Allison | WR | East Carolina (6-0, 192, 4.39) I was debating between a WR, an OLB or another OL here, but with the recent signing of David Bowens, I figured we could hold off on OLB for a bit, and our offensive line is pretty solid, starting wise, right now. So I went with WR, and a very good one too. Allison's only flaw is really his lack of experience in Division I. He is solid all around as a reciever, and was very productive in his playing time, but he just did not have a lot of playing time. Had he been a 4-year DI student, I think he would have been a 1st rounder. He is the deep threat we need, he is fast, great hands and can also go across the middle. A wonderful all-around reciever and good value at this pick. If Coles or Cotchery get hurt, we don't have to worry with this guy behind them. Also went to a military academy for 2 years, which is a good "Mangini guy" trait. Round 3: Andy Alleman | OG | Akron (6-4, 305, 5.07) A very quick, agile OG, which is what Mangini loves. Is a lot like Pete Kendall actually in his body type and style of play. Learning under Kendall for a year or two should be great for him. I think he has 2nd round talent, but is still a little raw. Could turn into an amazing guard with some tuteledge, which he will be getting here. This sures up the future of our offensive line extremely well, and lets us not worry about the guard positions for a long time. Round 5: Desmond Bishop | ILB | California (6-2, 239, 4.82) A great 3-4 ILB. He has the perfect size, and has the frame to add 5-10 pounds. He is just an amazing tackler, which an ILB should be, as he recorded 126 tackles in his senior year alone. Also had 15 tackles for loss, showing he can get into the backfield and cause some disruption. Plays much faster than his timed speed shows, and could be a steal this late. Round 6: Jacob Ford | DE/OLB | Central Arkansas (6-4, 249, 4.65) The perfect 3-4 OLB. He has amazing speed and produced very well in college, recording 15 sacks over his last 2 years. He has a knack for getting to the quarterback and getting in the backfield. A developmental guy, but we now have a lot of depth at the OLB position, so we do have the time to develop him. Has all the measurables you would want in a LB, just needs some tuteledge. An interesting prospect, definitely a boom or bust. Round 7: Courtney Brown | CB/ATH | Cal Poly (6-1, 200, 4.34) This guy is an absolutely astonishing athlete. He has amazing size and speed and was very productive in college, recording 7 interceptions his junior year. After running 4.34 and showing a vertical leap of 41 and 1/2 inches, he skyrocketed up the board (into the 7th round, haha). Could be an amazing special teams guy, and even a good CB if his potential shines through. A very good pick for a 7th rounder.
Not a bad mock off season but I think the following: - You're in love with the idea of taking a corner in Round 1 and I think you'll be devastated if we don't. - Allison won't go that high. He's a late day 1 at the earliest. - You like taking late day 2 picks early when some of these guys may go as undrafted free agents. Your mock addresses needs but I don't think the right players were selected.
I like the thought process and the first two picks, but I'd rather go with Woodley or Moses in the Allison pick and take Allison in the 3rd where he should still be available. I also would like to take an offensive tackle before taking a 2nd guard.
- I do think cornerback is our biggest need, and with a ton of talented cornerbacks in the draft, I would like to take one in the 1st round. I think the drop off between Revis and Aaron Ross to Josh Wilson is bigger than the drop off between Blalock and guards like Beekman or Ramirez, which is why I think we should go CB in round one. However if we do go OL, I would not be devastated. I still think CB is a bigger need, but I would not be unhappy with an OL or if a great pass rusher like Jarvis Moss fell to us. - I do think Allison will go that high after his combine, so it is just a different of opinion. I believe he will go late 2nd, early 3rd, right behind Anthony Gonzalez. - The only guy who could go undrafted is our 7th rounder, and it is a late 7th rounder. Bishop will be selected there, if not early than the 5th round, and same goes for Ford, so I don't know what you are taking about.
I don't think Woodley will be available with our 2nd rounders actually, and Moses just does not impress me anymore after his awful combine. I would not want to take Moses over a very good WR. Allison will not be available with our 3rd rounder, I guarantee it. He is soaring up the boards and has become probably a top 7 or 8 reciever. I think guard is more important the tackle, personally. Clement still has 2-3 more good years, but Kendall looks like he may be done very soon. We need someone to groom under Kendall, and also we have more depth at tackle with Adrian Jones and Wade Smith, than we do at guard.
Damn I wish Revis would be there at #25, but after his great Pro Day workout, I doubt it. Aaron Ross is more realistic I think. I like us getting Josh Beekman. I hear that Allison isn't a high character player... That hurts his chances to become a Jet. I love taking two offensive lineman on Day 1. One should be a Tackle though. I like both LBs, but Ford more so. He sounds like a good fit. We don't own a 7th round pick I believe, but that'd be a good way to spend it. Overall, solid job.
