IMO - the jets have obviously decided to mimic the denver strategy of signing high pick D linemen with the hopes of catching lightning in a bottle. it kind of worked for the broncs - at least temporarily - until the injury bug bit them in the front seven last year and prior. however - its NOT a bad idea for the jets who are taking these 4-3 ends with some embedded talent and see of they can man the 3-4 end position. hey - in 97-99 we played with rick lyle and ernie logan on the DL so why can't we be competitive with ellis, haynes, coleman, and wadsworth - the latter was a terror at FSU. haynes and wadsworth have the size and hopefully enough savvy by now to be effective in a rotation type role. in the 3-4 - the best scheme is a 3 man rotation along the front at the end position and a 2-man rotation at NT. its the linebackers that are your every down horses most of the time. its worth repeating - its much easier to find effective 3-4 ends in free agency than in the draft. all the tweeners we read about are either LB or DE material in the standard 4-3, not 3-4. so, i think its safe to say now that the jets WILL NOT be moving up to get a DL this year. i was hoping for a move to get Carriker but no go, IMO. still think there is a possibility of some movement on draft day to get CJ higher and to move down in the first to get a guard, LB or CB. jil
The only reason this might work better for the Jets than the Broncos is that they're trying to fit talent that failed in the 4-3 into a 3-4. Gives it some possibility of producing a player or two of merit. You gotta remember that the guys the Jets are signing now made the old Bryan Thomas look like Julius Peppers in comparison though... Big difference in the broncos strategy and ours though. Broncos got the guys and intended, from day 1, for them to be starters. They were COUNTING on them I get the impression we're getting these guys on the cheap, and hoping 1 sticks...

Yeah but the guys the Broncos failed with had all virtually busted out in Cleveland. That's the comparison. Taking a failed defensive lineman and hoping he failed for reasons other than himself. Note that Kenyon Coleman in not in that group. He's a backup that the Jets hope can become at least a rotational starter. The other guys all failed as a starter already.
Coleman is really the only guy I see staying on the roster. The position still needs to be addressed on day 1 of the draft, along w/ CB.
