ok since tui-ass-hobo got more response than the post i made ill just inject it here since its relative. for those who read my post thanks, for those who didnt here. i kind of agree with him, not only to help penny and open up coles/cotch. but also cuz we have no legit insurance policy if one of them goes down. also, we do not know how long coles has left. in all reality, for the futuresake of the team I dont even consider McCareins and Dwight to be on the roster. so that leaves us with Coles/Cotch/Smith. I think Smith has the potential to be the real deal after this upcoming season. and start being a full time wideout. even then were thin at WR. we all know the general consensus is it takes a WR 3 yrs to adjust before you can give a legit verdict on them. why not start grooming now? listen, im all about bolstering the front 7, but in the 1st round alone our best value come 25 will be either at WR or at CB. one or maybe more of each of the top 20 prospects of either mentioned position will be on our lap. just cuz we traded to the end of the second rd doesnt make me wish to reach at OLB or DT for a prospect whos got a mid 2nd rd grade. most of the people who would fit our front 7 are converts from either system or position (4-3 DT to 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB) you get my point. the only players id think of taking in the 1st rd that come to my mind are justin harrell, anthony spencer, and quentin moses. im sure theres more but these seem to be the least questionable of the prospects. even then one or more of those three might be selected come our pick. now you can ask yourself. would we rather want to hope someone can convert successfully like that? system and position change. thats fine, you gotta roll the dice sometimes and any real coach can make it work over half the time. but my view is, like i said in all reality our only recievers are coles/cotch/smith. and smith is still learning the position. so if a prospect like Bowe,Rice,Jarrett(his stock seems to be slipping), or Meachem is there. id be hard pressed not to jump on it. same goes for CB. Aaron Ross especially comes to mind. now im not condeming other draft strategies cuz as long as you get value where you pick, the position can become a moot point. but thinking ahead, what if Smith does not pan out? we'll have a legit WR to use instead. and even better........what if he does work out? i think theyd be peaking around the same time seeing as that Smith is still coming into his own and a true WR will be able to work with him this yr. just my thinking, all I"m saying is the talk about a 1st Round WR isnt that crazy.
I am wondering if while lurking around the men's room at Hofstra, Cimini overheard someone say a THIRD receiver, we dont need a three. we have two 2's and a three. we need a One.
Why isn't Coles a #1? Just because he isn't freakishly tall? Coles and Cotchery make a terrific starting duo. What they need is a true #3, a slot guy that can spread the field. Like what Santana Moss provided in 2002.
Coles isn't a 1, because he doesnt command safety help over the top. Hence, no openings for the slot guy, the TE, and too much help at the LoS against the run. Coles will occasionally beat a guy on a move, but he isnt going to run by anyone. You want a guy that commands enough respect from a defense to average 14-15 YPC, not 12.
Maybe a WR as a second-day pick, but my hopes are for a TE in rounds 1-2. A tall target with good speed, decent blocking, and great hands. A tall target in the middle with the power to break a tackle and the speed to go downfield on occassion. I would rather have that than another overpaid WR.
Coles is consistantly doubleteamed from what I observe during games. Not on every play by any means (noone is) but I remember an opposing team making the mistake of laying single coverage on him for a game and he reamed the defense. Now if only I could remember who it was. Also I remember Dwight being like a mini-Chrebet (They're short. It's a joke.) before he got injured. A second time. In one season. Okay so he fumbled once, too, but he deserves a roster spot for the punt returns (two yards more/attempt than Washington?) and he can be a good fourth/fifth receiver or a backup in case of injury. So I don't see him getting cut. A third receiver, no, but still a roster slot.
I think that Eric Moulds would be a good pick up because of his experience, but I think that we should be looking at Charles Rogers. I know that there is a lot of baggage with him, but if we were to sign him for the minimum salary and Mangini could straighten him out, maybe just maybe we could find ourselves a diamond in the ruff.
Someones going to say it...but he's not a Mangini guy. Actually, I wanted Rogers at the league min. last year. He's still young enough to resurrect his career, and I REALLY trust our coaching staff.
I don't think he ever truly embraced the role of not starting and I got the feeling he didn't get along with Lil Schott, and now they're shopping him. That makes me think that he isn't the lockerroom presence they would like. That, plus the fact that he is a veteran that couldn't produce until later on in the season, make me want him gone.
Charles Rogers or Antonio Bryant would be great signings, yeah they got "character" issues but could low risk high reward types too.
the problem with McCareins is his base salary of about ~2.9 mil is he really worth 2.9 mil? we can get someone with the same ability at 1 mil base if we cut him we save ~500k I say cut him, release him, trade him, whatever we should draft a Wr in one of the 1st 3 rnds Wr take 3 years to develop but at #3 or #4 the rookie should be adaquate and when Coles is gone in 2 years the rookie should step in with no dropoff and he hasnt embraced the backup role on this team, he actually has been a bust for us as soon as we traded a 2nd rnd pick for him(what a mistake)
I partially agree, I do think he embraced it but he did so about midway through the season. We'd be better off if he did for us all year next year but he wants to start so it will be better off for all if they move him.
I hope we can get our 4th rounder back from the 49 ers for Mac Cariens. If not I will settle for a 7Th .I do not want J MAC on this team at that salaray.NO WAY.
Too bad Olsen won't be there at 25. He could solve about 3 problems. Help block on the right side, catch over the middle or run out of the slot. We probably wouldn't need another 3 with a TE like that. I also think Brad Smith will have to develop into a 3 this year or won't be on the team next year. They don't want to use him as a 3rd QB, it seems, and without that it will be hard to carry him for 28 touches a year again.
Mike Walker would be a kickass late pick for us. He's a 2nd round talent that hopefully will be available on the second day...last I heard he was a big riser on boards.
I'm a big fan of Patrick Crayton from Dallas, he seemed to step up big for them this year from what I saw.
Yea, they showed a stat last year in one of the games that said that Crayton had one of the highest catches to thrown to ratio in the league. So the guy has pretty good hands and can provide a nice target for a #3.
