Over the past week, I've been piecing together my grades for the picks in our TGG mock draft, which is coming all great so far. These are my grades for each pick with a couple sentences of analysis for each. The grades were pretty high, but that's because most picks have been very good, not because I was being generous. If I didn't give your pick a great grade, don't take it personally. I never checked who had what team. I'll try my best to update this as the other picks come in. Well, here it is and remember, it's just one guy's opinion.

Mods could put this thread next to the other TGG mock draft threads. I'll try to update it.

    ROUND 1

    1. Oakland: Calvin Johnson WR: Can’t argue with Oakland taking possibly the best WR prospect to come along in the last decade or so. They really need someone to throw him the ball though. If Oakland trades Randy Moss to Green Bay for Aaron Rodgers, this is an A+. Since they really need a QB, this grade is lowered just a bit. A-

    2. Detroit: Joe Thomas OT: With Jeff Backus signed long term to play LT and the trade for George Foster, it could be debatable that OT is not a need, but is George Foster the answer? Either way, this is a solid pick, but I personally would have opted for the franchise QB. B

    3. Cleveland: Brady Quinn QB: Not much to complain about here. I like Charlie Frye and Derrick Anderson at QB, but they don’t come close to the potential of Brady Quinn, who already said he wanted to be a Brown I believe. With a good looking receiving core and a new RB, a QB could be the missing piece to Cleveland’s puzzle. A-

    4. Tampa Bay: Gaines Adams DE: Nice pick for Tampa Bay. This fills a need with Simeon Rice aging and Dewayne White leaving for Detroit. He could potentially come in and start immediately. Some may it’s a reach, but it really isn’t. A-

    5. Arizona: Alan Branch NT: Solid pickup, but they have a good set of DTs with Dockett, Clancy, Watson and Jonathan Lewis. I suppose that Branch is an upgrade, but it might have been more helpful to opt for the DE with Berry and Okafor getting up there in years and Berry with frequent injuries. This gives the Cards’ a top DT unit or 2 big lazy Michigan DTs B

    6. Washington: Amobi Okoye DT: Defensive Tackle is a major need for the Skins’ and this guy could be one hell of a DT. Other than Cornelius Griffin, there really isn’t an adequate starter. They made their lone pick on Day 1 a good one. A

    7. Minnesota: Jamal Anderson DE: With Erasmus James having an unimaginably bad season, they really could use an upgrade. This guy can stop the run and rush the passer and will only help their record setting run defense. A good pick, but Gaines Adams would have been a slam dunk. B+

    8. Houston: Jamarcus Russell QB: This could form a fantastic QB/WR tandem with Russell bombing it deep to Andre Johnson. Does David Carr deserve another chance? Was Safety or offensive tackle a bigger need? Either way, this guy was a major steal here and you can’t let him get by after passing up on a franchise RB last year to go for a need instead… A-

    9. Miami: Levi Brown OT: Offensive Line is a bigger need than some think for Miami. Some could have opted for a defensive lineman or secondary player, but this could be the best choice. Somebody has to block for Culpepper and Brown. A

    10. Atlanta: Laron Landry: Great value here for Atlanta and fills a major need. Was CB Chris Houston or Leon Hall a better choice? If Jimmy Williams can effectively play CB, than this is a slam dunk. We’ll have to see… A

    11. San Francisco: Adrian Peterson RB: The most controversial pick so far. They could have gone for a WR or a 3-4 DE such as Carricker which would fill a major need, but this is a hell of a BPA than again. This won’t be as effective as the McAllister/Bush duo in New Orleans since these two guys are both pounding every down type of RBs. Frank Gore had such a great season, that it would be insulting to pick a RB this high… Could create a problem in San Fran… Nice creativity though… C+

    12. Buffalo: Marshawn Lynch RB: Fills a need, but was a bit of a reach for the Bills. They could have been better off going with value and need with a WR, Patrick Willis or most importantly a CB, which is a glaring need and there were two great CBs available here. With Anthony Thomas resigned, they could have waited for a Kenny Irons/Michael Bush/Tony Hunt etc. later on. B-

    13. St. Louis: Patrick Willis LB: Fills a big need for St. Louis. There are very few bad things about this guy to speak of. He should have gone to Buffalo to replace London Fletcher, but instead the Rams get lucky and pick up one hell of a player that should help upgrade one of the league’s worst tackling units in 2006. A

    14. Carolina: Reggie Nelson S: A bit high for this guy anymore. It is a need, but there were better options than to reach for a need. WR, TE, DE… I would have opted for any of the 3 mentioned positions first, but this wasn’t a bad pick I suppose. B-

    15. Pittsburgh: Leon Hall CB: This is an interesting choice that I haven’t Pittsburgh go for in other mocks… I like it. There is a need for a potential upgrade with Ike Taylor having an off season and Deshea Townsend getting older. A nice BPA pick also. Jarvis Moss is risky since Pittsburgh may move to the 3-4 defense. A-

    16. Green Bay: Adam Carricker DE: A steal for GB. Similar to their other DE/DT Cullen Jenkins, who will likely stay inside while Carricker forms a great duo outside with Aaron Kampman. Green Bay has all the components for a 3-4 defense… A

    17. Jacksonville: Dwayne Jarrett WR: They have 3 decent young WRs and just signed Dennis Northcut as well. Not even really that great of a value here. Jacksonville doesn’t have many glaring needs, but a Safety or Linebacker might have been a better choice. B

    18. Cincinnati: Chris Houston CB: Great selection. A great value and a need. They did already select a CB in Round 1 last year however with Jonathan Joseph, so TE, DT or LB might have been better. Deltha O’Neal and Tory James are on the dark sides of their careers though. A-

    19. Tennessee: Robert Meachem WR: This is a major need for Tennessee with Drew Bennett departing as a free agent. Since Nick Harper was just signed, there is no longer a need for a CB. A DE opposite Vanden Bosch could have been more of a need though. Either way, a good pick. A-

    20. NY Giants: Darrelle Revis CB: Solid pick for the Giants. They need a LB more than anything else and could have gone for Pousluzny here. They did need a CB as well however, and this guy could shore up that secondary. A-

    21. Denver: Jarvis Moss DE/OLB: Great value pick here. They need another pass rushing DE and this guy fits that bill. There are plenty of defensive linemen in Denver, but no standouts like this guy can be. A-

    22. Dallas: Ted Ginn Jr. WR: With Leonard Davis being signed and Colombo resigned there is not much of a need for Justin Blalock anymore. WR is an underrated need for Dallas with Terry Glenn entering his 12th season and Terrell Owens on the roster. This guy is very dangerous and can also help the Cowboys return unit. A

    23. Kansas City: Dwayne Bowe WR: WR is a major need for Kansas City and this is the big, tall WR they have lacked for quite a while. The only other possible for the Chiefs at this point was Justin Blalock. Great pick. A-

    24. New England: Michael Griffin S: He will eventually replace Rodney Harrison at SS. A great tackler and team leader who seems like that Patriot kind of player. With New England filling most of their needs in free agency, this was a great choice. A-

    25. NY Jets: Justin Blalock OL: By no means an exciting pick, but it certainly will be once the RBs are finding bigger holes and Pennington is more comfortable in the pocket. The only other option here is CB with Aaron Ross. I’d prefer Blalock. Great pick. A

    26. Philadelphia: Paul Poslouszny LB: Great choice here for the Eagles as their defense gains a spectacular vintage LB. This is a need for the Eagles especially since he should be able to play inside or outside. A

    27. New Orleans: Greg Olsen TE: They could have opted for defense, but this is a great value and a need. There is no pass catcher to speak of in New Orleans and since Joe Horn left, there’s a need for another receiver, and why not a TE? A-

    28. New England: Marcus McCauley CB: New England doesn’t have too many needs, but they could have went for a younger OLB/DE or ILB (Lawrence Timmons could fit there?). This is a good pick and shows that they will not resign Samuel next season. If he leaves, this is a brilliant pick. For now, it’s a solid one. Was Aaron Ross the better option at CB? B

    29. Baltimore: Jon Beason OLB: Good choice since Adalius Thomas is a Patriot. It fills a need, but he isn’t really the type of OLB the Ravens look for since they play some 3-4 still. An offsenvie lineman might have been a wiser choice. B

    30. San Diego: Lawrence Timmons OLB/ILB: Interesting choice. This gets an A+ for creativity. With Donnie Edwards gone and Randall Godfrey really up there in age, there’s a big need for an ILB. With none on the board, they opt for a versatile player who should be able to fit. I love creative picks like these. A-

    31. Chicago: Tony Hunt RB: Very surprising pick by Chicago since Cedric Benson starts and they already have a good power running backup in Adrian Peterson. Tony Hunt is a power runner too and this makes for a VERY one dimensional backfield in Chicago. This was not even really a need. They needed a TE, WR, DT or OLB first. Solid idea to take a RB, but not a power back. D

    32. Indianapolis: Aaron Ross CB: This was another surprising pick to me. I suppose they need some depth since Nick Harper left as a free agent, but Jason David and Marlin Jackson are good starters. With David’s size, he may be better suited for the Nickel role instead. I might have gone different ways with this pick, but it’s really a decent pick. B

    ROUND 2

    33. Oakland: Drew Stanton QB: This makes the Calvin Johnson pick look even better. Although this is a bit high for Stanton, it fills a need for Oakland since the only QB they have around anymore is Andrew Walter. B

    34. Detroit: Trent Edwards QB: If the Lions select Edwards in round 3, this is a solid pick. The risk/reward factor isn’t worth it here for the Lions, who have better options than to reach for Edwards. This isn’t a bad pick, but a questionable one. C

    35. Tampa Bay: Sidney Rice WR: They couldn’t get Calvin Johnson in round 1, so they get another playmaker in round 2. With Michael Clayton “degressing” and Joey Galloway going on 36, a WR is certainly a need and this guy is a steal here A

    36. Cleveland: Joe Staley OT: Extremely athletic Tackle who should take on the LT role in Cleveland and allow Kevin Schaffer to play RT. Nice pick, but Ryan Kalil would have been a home run. A-

    37. Chicago: Ray McDonald DE/DT: This is the draft’s biggest surprise yet. The Bears have 3 very good DEs with Mark Anderson, Ade Ogunlaye and Alex Brown. They could use a DT with Ian Scott potentially leaving and Tank Johnson being a thug, but this guy would make a very undersized DT. With bigger needs and much better DEs and DTs around, this wasn’t a great choice. This is a good player at least… D

    38. Arizona: Tony Ugoh OT: Good choice with Leonard Davis leaving as a free agent and their offensive line being overall mediocre. I might have gone with a different OT, but a good pick overall. B+

    39. Houston: Aaron Sears OT: This was the potential Cards’ pick that could have helped their line at Guard or Tackle. Instead, he provides the same benefit to the Texans’ line. A

    40. Miami: Brandon Meriwether S/CB: The Dolphins secondary is extremely mediocre and they need an upgrade at Safety and Cornerback. Well this guy can potentially upgrade either one. A-

    41. Minnesota: Michael Bush RB: This was another surprising pick. Chester Taylor is a good all around player and depth is also solid with Mewelde Moore and Ciatrick Fason. This wasn’t a great value pick and not a need unless by some chance he can play FB. D-

    42. San Francisco: Justin Harrell DT: Great choice here. They need a DE and this is one of the last missing components of their 3-4 defense (No longer missing). A

    43. Buffalo: Anthony Spencer DE/OLB: The Bills locked up Aaron Schobel and have a solid DE opposite him. This was a solid value, but they have much bigger needs than this. Can he play OLB and be an Adalius Thomas type? If so, great pick. B

    44. Atlanta: Ben Grubbs G/T: This fills a major need with OG Matt Lehr leaving and Wayne Gandy at age 37. This was also a good value here. Does he fit the system? He should be able to, but I’m not sure. A-

    45. Carolina: David Harris ILB: Excellent choice for the Panthers. Davis has the speed to help at OLB or ILB. Some say this is a reach, but I love this pick. A-

    46. Pittsburgh: Victor Abiamiri DE/OLB: Whether they play a 4-3 or 3-4 style defense, this guy seems to be a good fit in either spot. Solid value and a solid pick. B+

    47. Green Bay: Brian Leonard RB/FB: There couldn’t be a more perfect fit. The Pack’ have needs at both backfield positions and Leonard projects well to both. He’ll be a major contributor blocking, running and receiving. A

    48. Jacksonville: Ryan Kalil C: Solid pick for the Jaguars as they need depth on the line as well. It’s possible the Kalil can push Brad Meester out of a job or at least take over a in year or two. Bigger needs? B+

    49. Cincinnati: Zach Miller TE: The Bengals offense could be even scarier with a threat at the TE spot. Ignore Zach Miller’s sub par 40 time, because this guy is a very solid player. A-

    50. Tennessee: Samson Satele C/G/T: The Titans have potential needs at RT, G and C. With Mawae’s great career almost over, this guy will be their potential heir. He will also help at other spots on the line. A-

    51. NY Giants: Stewart Bradley OLB: The Giants are in dire need of Linebackers. He’s a solid value here and fills a major need. I personally would have chosen a different LB. B+

    52. St. Louis: Anthony Gonzalez WR: Even though they brought in Drew Bennett, they lost Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald and Isaac Bruce has been playing since George Bush Sr. was in office. He makes a great slot guy and returner. A-

    53. Dallas Cowboys: Eric Weddle S/CB: I love this guy as a player. He should be able to play CB or Safety and the Cowboys need help in both spots. He can also help their return game and is an overall great player… Fills a major need either way and is a great value… Nearly an A+ A

    54. Kansas City: DeMarcus Tyler DT: A risk for Herm Edwards. They could really use a guy like this though. He’ll aid their pass and rush defense. You have take risks to get to the top… B+

    55. Seattle: Josh Beekman OG: Don’t tell me this is a reach… There is a need for a Guard in Seattle and who better than a classic BC lineman. A-

    56. Denver: Quinn Pitcock DT: This guy could have gone in the last 1st round. Great value here and Denver needs a young DT. A

    57. Philadelphia: Jason Hill WR: Great prospect with good size, great speed and high potential. My guess is he’ll become an instant starter in Philly. Nice value. A

    58. New Orleans: Tanard Jackson S/CB: The Saints could use a little help at Safety and a lot of help at CB... Anything to get Fred Thomas away from where CBs play… B

    59. NY Jets: Lamar Woodley OLB/DE: I wouldn’t have asked for anyone else here. This gives Hobson the option to play ILB or to trade Barton if we must. A

    60. Miami: Justin Durant OLB: Had a great performance at the combine and was extremely productive at DIAA. A great sleeper pick and a great pick. A-

    61. Baltimore: Daymeion Hughes CB: If he ran a 4.40, he would have been a first round pick IMO. His mediocre 40-time gives the Ravens a nice selection in the late 2nd. A-

    62. San Diego: Brandon Siler ILB: Another ILB for San Diego? Both of them are good players, but I wouldn’t bank my ILB corps on 2 consecutively picked rookies. They could have gone for WR or Safety as well, which are also major needs. Good pick, but the Timmons selection in Round 1 degrades this one a bit. B-

    63. NY Jets: Eric Wright CB : They certainly need a CB, but it’s hard to imagine that Mangini would go after a guy with as many off-field problems as Wright has had. Great workouts make this pick a little more appealing, but I would have gone with a couple different CBs first B

    64. Tampa Bay: Aaron Rouse S: Pretty solid pick, but I felt there were better safetys available at that spot. Personally, I wouldn't have gone safety there, but that is very debatable. I guess he provides a possible upgrade over Will Allen at safety... B+

Nice, I get to rip your criticisms of my picks

The Branch pick was obviously my #2 choice behind Adams, but when he went off the board it became obvious where I had to go. Arizona is routinely one of the worst rushing defenses in the league, which is why a true NT is needed. Not to mention, having a player like Branch will open up Darnell Docket's lanes inside tremendously, not to mention take the pressure off of any edge rushers. I could have went with Jamaal Williams, but without power inside he'd have had limited effectiveness.

The Ugoh pick was absolutely a necessity, not only is he great value, being in my mind the third best tackle available, but also a huge need. He's a pure LT, the first one the Cards have had in a long time, and is needed desperately to replace Leonard Davis. I don't know what bringing in Sears would have done considering he's a Guard, maybe in a pinch a Right Tackle, but it wouldn't have done much to help the Cardinals, short or long term.

For the Ravens, Beason wasn't taken to replace Adalius Thomas, for that I'd rely on a combination of Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott, Beason was taken to sure up the middle of the Ravens D as well as be the eventual replacement for Ray Lewis. Not to mention, the versatility that Beason brings, being that he's a good fit anywhere in a 43, and can also rush the passer if needed from any LB spot in a 34, he's a natural fit. With the Ravens front 3 being as strong as they are, directly replacing Thomas is not as dire as it seems.

And Hughes is a perfect selection for the Ravens D, with Reed and Landry behind him, Hughes will be able to make the big plays on the short field that Samari Rolle hasn't the past couple years.

Oh, and nice work on them all

Don't mention it. It really didn't take very long since I was only doing a few per day since that's all the time I could spare for this. I got a good portion of the 2nd round done in this past 45 minutes though.

The Ravens and Cards both have had good drafts thus far. Alan Branch could be a force in the middle and Ugoh could be a big upgrade at RT.

Daymeion Hughes was definately a steal there.

I'm actually not a fan of this pick at all.

The Texans line doesn't hold up long enough for the deep outs, and it seems the new coaches are going for a short pass system.

Remember, Carr has a damn good arm himself, but the Texans still went away from their two best players strengths (the deep pass) and used alot more short and intermediate routes.

There are no two players in the NFL more poorly utilized than David Carr and Andre Johnson IMO. I don't think Russel would help at all.

And if the Niners want AP, can we have Gore?

Also, Victor Abiamiri is turning into one of the most interesting prospects in the draft for me. I'm starting to really like this guy. He's similar to Spencer, but bigger and faster.

I wasn't either, but Carr has had 5 NFL seasons to prove he's a great NFL QB and hasn't done so. Maybe it's time for some competition... A Drew Brees/Phllip Rivers type of scenario was what I immediately thought. Plus, Russell is a great steal there.

Difference between Rivers/Brees and Russell/Carr is the O-line.

I mean, we're always talking about the trenches this and the trenches that...the Texans haven't done ANYTHING with the O-line til last years draft...and then their best pick goes down with a career threatening injury.

I don't see how Russell would be any better, except he might take a little longer to sack.

I really like the Wright pick for us. From what I heard, when he was at USC he was being considered one of the best CBs theyve ever had there.

The guy sounds crazy talented, and a beautiful pick for us.

Thanks for that, I could tell you put a lot of time into it, and I especially like having the best draft so far, for Dallas.

I think you did a great job, but the ONLY thing I could criticize on is the lower grades. You have to be able to give out an F. For instance the Tony Hunt pick, no offense to whoever drafted him, but that was definitely and F, not a C-. I would say 90% of the grades were great, but some of them I thought should have been lower because it seems like you were a bit worried about giving a bad grade. Overall, very nice job though.

I really like the Calvin Johnson/Drew Stanton combo....if Oakland had a line.

I really think Stanton is going to be a very good pro QB.

I agree with most of this. I don't agree that the Texans shouldn't have chosen Russell, I think it was a fine choice and I do think they need another QB. Although I do think someone like Levi Brown would have been better and they could see how Carr does with some pass protection, but I would still give the pick a B/B+, maybe as high as an A-.

I agree the Niners getting AP should have been lower grade-wise, I think it was one of the worst picks in the draft.

And I agree with the Victor Abiamiri statement, which is why I got him for the Steelers . I was elated when I saw he was still there because I think he could be an amazing NFL player, especially in the Steelers defenese where they are gonna be running both the 3-4 and 4-3, and his skills will just absolutely shine. I thought it should have been higher than a B+, but I can live with that, fine by me.

Thanks for your hard work and excellent effort, PA .. very enjoyable read

I'm actually very happy with the Siler pick, the Chargers "need" two 34ILB's and not one, Godfrey is a million years old, and Siler was nice value in that spot as well, but I think you'll feel differently when you see the rest of my plan for SD unfold as the draft progresses .. I have a long-term vision for SD in terms of which positions to address early and where the value can be found later, but that will become more clear as we continue .. if it doesn't blow up in my face :eek:hmy:

Anyway, that's neither here nor there, thanks for an excellent read overall .. very enjoyable, my friend

If Jacksonville already has a # 1 receiver, please tell me who that is?

Also, please name a safety or a linebacker that wouldn't have been a reach at # 17.

Personally, I felt that the value at pick # 17 wasn't all that great. I had Leon Hall and Adam Carriker get picked right before me. The next guy on my draft board was Posluszny who went at # 27. Jarrett was easily worth the 17th pick in the draft and the Jags (who were great on defense but weak on offense) need a # 1 receiver.

Ryan Kalil should be able to play guard or tackle in the NFL. He should start somewhere on the line for Jacksonville. In this weak draft for linemen, Kalil would be a solid second rounder in any year. Considering that he will make about six million per year less than Derrick Dockery, the Jaguars did very well by taking one of the best interior linemen in the entire draft here.

I can't argue much with the grades that you gave the Rams. My only comment regarding the Rams is that Anthony Gonzales was probably the best value at receiver in round two yet the selection earned a lower grade than Rice or Hill. I just think that Jacksonville averaged at least an A- considering where they picked and what was available.

    1. Jarrett was a bigger reach than any other safety or linebacker you would have gotten. Jarrett is possibly falling into the 2nd round in real life, and you got him in the middle of the 1st, so I think the value was just bad there. I would have gotten Meachem, Ginn Jr. or maybe even Michael Griffen over Jarrett.

    2. Kalil may play guard but his natural position, and the position everyone is looking at him at is center. He will almost definitely play center in the NFL. There were plenty of very good NATURAL guards or tackles you could have gotten, so even though you got the best lineman, you got one that is suited to play center, not the positions you need to fill, which is why you got a poor grade. Also, I dont even think OL was a need whatsoever. This pick could have been MUCH better utitilzed. I actually would have given you a lower grade than a B+ here.

    3. The reason Gonzalez got a worse grade was because the Rams didn't really need a WR. They have 3 very solid WR's right now (Holt, Bruce and Bennett). I realize Bruce is old, but that is why they have Bennett, so you drafted Gonzalez as a slot guy. You wasted a 2nd rounder on a slot reciever, hence the lower grade. But, nice pick with Willis in the 1st.

    4. I would not give Jacksonville an A-. I would give them a C+, at most, personally.

he was an amazing corner, and if cured of his off the field illness, he could be one hell of a 2nd round steal....given a B for now on tha pick sounds about right, but it could skyrocket to an A when we see the end result of his ability in the NFL

Overall, I think i have done a decent job for the Jets, and PA is pretty much on point for what grade my picks have warrented

Sciko, I drafted Eric Wright for the Titans in another mock draft .. RD 3 .. and here's what I said when I picked him .. I had to take him because the value was obscene, Wright is a 1st RD talent, unfortunately he's also a UDFA character .. and I said that about him when he was my own pick, and I actually said a lot worse, said I needed to take a shower after that pick because I felt dirty, but I couldn't pass on the value so I had to hold my nose and role around in the mud with a pig

Anyway, based on talent that pick was a steal, but IMO this guy has a 50/50 shot at best .. 50/50 that he doesn't wind up in prison .. and I also said that about Wright when I picked him

Ever hear the term, boom or bust?

This Guy is the definition .. he'll either be an All-Pro Caliber Player or a Convict

jarrett shouldn't be falling right now...there's no reason for it

he should be the 2nd WR taken, i don't think there should really be any question honestly, but i guess thats why it's an opinion. i don't think meachem or bowe or ginn are close to as talented as jarrett
