If the Jets don't move up for one of the Dlineman, I think they should just continue the work they started last year, and build a solid offensive wall with the selection of a road-grading guard. The Jets failure to compete with NE is not on defense; we're even there. It's the Jets O vs. the Pats D where we fall short. I believe Penny and his receivers will get the job done with a better running game and the addition of TJ gets us close, but we still need to get bigger and meaner at RG (and RT). Plus, we need to counteract their upgrade of A Thomas. Is there a large, mean man there at 25 for the Jets?
It's not a sexy pick by any means, but Blaylock would work wonders for us and solidify the line for years to come. I wouldn't be upset if he was our first round pick.
I wish we could have Omobi, but Blaylock is by far the most logical pick for us. TJ would be so sex-ay playing behind our line.
I trhink Blalock fits that bill and I know for a fact that he is a player the Jets like. What I don't know is whether or not he can play tackle or not. Either way, getting hiim at 25 makes a lot of sense.
Yes, I would love to see them address the O-line in round 1. We have our RBs, now we have to make sure they have the manpower in front of them. Blalock would be a great pick
Staley is listed at 296 lbs on espn.com's scouting report, much smaller than D'Brick when we drafted him. I'd like at least one of our tackles to be playing at over 300lbs.
Ok, so he weighs in at 304 after spending a couple months living in the weight room. What is going to happen when he gets into practices where the majority of his workouts are going to involve heavy running - in Mangini's 2 1/2 hour marathon practices no less - and then enters the regular season? He's going to drop the weight like Brick did and most likely become a liability in the running game.
Blalock is probably the best choice for us right now. Out of the people available with our first round pick, he will probably adress our needs the best.
I think this is going to be an enjoyable draft for the Jets. I've got a feeling Tanny's gonna make a move on day one and it's gonna be a move up. If we could come out of round 1 and 2 with a RT and CB we will be in great shape. Grab a couple guards in rounds 3 and 4 and then build some depth in 5 thru 7 I will frackin psyched. Whats the chance of a draft day trade involving Barton or McCarins or even Cedric Houston?
I love how everyone has suddenly forgotten about our extremely suspect defensive front seven. Wasn't that the weakest area on our team like... 3 weeks ago?!?! Sheesh. I guess this team simply needs quality players at all positions, offense and defense.
I'm with you on this CKNY6. Obviously, you need an athlete of some ability, but I really would like some heft on this line 325, 330
Blalock would probably make me the happiest of any of the players that we have a legit shot at getting. Unless of course we go and grab Ramirez in the late second or third.
I really don't want the Jets to draft a guard in the first round unless they project him to be one of the best guards in the NFL. In 4 years give or take we're going to have to resign Mangold and Ferguson. I really don't want to be worrying about a guard at the same time. If the Jets can get a strong RT on that pick then I'm okay with that but to add a guard on a first round pick is just asking for cap problems a few years down the road. Obviously if you have a young all-pro guard you do what it takes to get everybody signed.
If Staley is as good as claimed above (best offensive tackle workout many have ever seen), he'll be gone by 25
To further support my point, from the Palm Beach Post's "inside Dolphin's" section: Former Central Michigan left tackle Joe Staley had an impressive pro day workout on Thursday and the Dolphins, who have strong interest in him, were on hand, according to scout John Murphy of Yahoo! Sports. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Staley, a former tight end, was timed around 4.8 in the 40-yard dash and also had great times in agility drills. Staley also had a 32-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-9 broad jump. He opted not to bench press after doing 27 reps at the combine "That was probably one of the best all-around workouts I've seen by a big tackle in recent years," a veteran offensive line scout told Murphy. "He (Staley) moves around like a defensive back: light on his feet and just great movement skills and agility. "My personal assessment would be that kid does not last past the Top-20 picks. Just too much ability and the potential to lock down a left tackle spot for the next 10 years."
What about Goddard and Blanton as replacements for Clement? I have a feeling Mr. T/Mangini like one of those guys to plug a hole on the O-line long term. I don't think Tannenbaum would be playing so cavalier with the RT position in free agency if he didn't have a clear idea one of those guys was our future RT or he has somehow guaranteed himself that Clement will be back with the Jets in '07, enabling him to wait another year to solidify the RT position. BTW, I like Blaylock as an RG. If there's one guy on the Jets who I think could go tomorrow and not miss a beat it's Moore at RG. Too many penalties, and not enough performance to make up for it.
What is this fascination with Texas lineman, the record the last few years has been mediocre at best. These guys are so much bigger than everyone in the Big 12 that they dominate on strength and athleticism, and then when they get to the pros they realize it's not that easy and they turn out to be underwhelming. You don't pick guards in the first round, you pick tackles. -X-
