Pats trade for Welker Pats trade for Welker New England gives up two draft choices for Miami WR Posted: Monday March 5, 2007 4:47PM; Updated: Monday March 5, 2007 5:04PM Spurning the risk that would have come with signing Miami receiver/returner Wes Welker to a restricted-free-agent offer sheet, the New England Patriots instead acquired Welker on Monday afternoon for two picks in the 2007 draft. Signing Welker to the offer sheet would have meant Miami could have matched the offer and kept him or that it could have let New England acquire Welker in exchange for a second-round pick only. Instead, the Patriots will surrender their second- and seventh-round choices. It's also likely under this scenario that New England will have to lay out less cash to sign Welker long term. Because Welker, 25, was a restricted free agent, Miami first had to sign him to a one-year contract, which it did on Monday. Later in the day, the trade to New England was consummated. It's thought the Patriots have a long-term contract worked out already with Welker, but it has not yet been announced. There were reports over the weekend that Welker would sign an offer sheet with New England averaging in the neighborhood of $6 million a year. With the deal being done this way, it's highly unlikely the Patriots will be making the 5-foot-9 Welker that rich. Welker is only the second player in the last 15 NFL seasons to lead his team in receptions, punt returns and kickoff returns in the same season, which he did in 2006. (Former Titan Derrick Mason last accomplished that in 2001.) In New England it's likely he'll be given a good shot to start at receiver, and he'll probably return punts and get some other special teams opportunities as well. The Patriots, unusually active in the first four days of free agency, now have traded for Welker and signed three free agents: linebacker Adalius Thomas, tight end Kyle Brady and running back Sammy Morris. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/03/05/welker/index.html
Pats TRADE for welker So much for that 38 million half the people on here where claiming he was signed to. He never signed the draft sheet. They sit down with Welker and negotiate a new deal. He is projected to get 1.5 million per year. Now they only have 2 first round pics. If you think Welker is not worth a 2nd round pick ( after the Chad Jackson Fiasco) who they got in the second round, I suggest you pull up the game tape of him killing the pats defense this yeat when they played. This guys is a perfect replacement for Troy Brown. With two first roundes this gave them the flexibilty to pull the trigger. High moter, great speed, great hands, versitile and great in the slot. Firstly, this should be in the NFL Froum... Secondly, I am happy this trade happened. Wes Welker is a good player, but they gave up a 2nd round pick for a KR/slot Reciever. Not only did they give up a high draft pick, but a TON of cash.
Um no they didnt. They never signed the offer sheet. He is going to get 1.5 million per year. They make a new deal.
What are you talking about? They have two first round picks. They never signed the offer sheet. They sit down and make a new deal. He does not get a cent of the offer. He is going to get much less. The fish get a second round pick, and the pats get welker. No Money involved.
They also never signed the offer sheet. They make a new deal. Welker does not see a cent of that offer. They make a new deal.
The Pats are kind of like the Jets older brother who constantly beat us up. Until we actually step over them Pats news is Jets news.
That is correct he will get less monry and a 7th round pick most likely will not make the squad anyway..
Welker isnt worth a 5th round pick, let alone a 2nd. I watched play down here all year long, he's no more then an average kick/punt returner. Did he return a punt or kickoff for a TD all of last season? I dont think so. I dont even remember him getting close to breaking one. 75% of his receiving yards were in garbage time, or when the fins were down 2 TDs. Welker had one good game all season and that was against the Pats. I've been listening to local sports radio all day and all they can do it laugh about this. I'm sorry, but theres no way you will convince me this is a good move. This is a bad move by the Pats anyway you look at it.
They have two first round picks, you guys are spinning this. I see serious upside in Welker. Bill B and Pioli are not idiots. They are trading a nuber 28 second rounder for a guy with a comparable skill set to a young Troy Brown. The best reciever in the draft was the last one taken. The pats traded up to the top of the second round to get a guy that was injured all year, and out for this year. All this talk will be funny when this little bastard is Dion Branching us to death next season. He played well with some stiff, and a shit team in Miami. Wonder how he will fair with one of the best qb's ever. He has obvious upside. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3356251552851907888&q=wes+welker
The only thing the Pats are going to get out of Welker is the chance for him to become a good slot reciever. Welker is an average to below average kick/punt returner, that is not going to change. Am I worried? No way! Am I glad this deal was done? Yes I am. It takes a second round pick away from the Pats who already have a big need at the WR position. Wes Welker is not going to change that.
I understand that, but that is exactly what they want him for. The slot. You have to see the fact he was in Miami last year. he brings a skill set comparable to a young Troy brown. He is a versitle young guy, with speed. I do not think anyone has seen this kids abilities. In a draft so loaded with wr's they can trade down and split a first rounder into two second rounders. The talent scouts have the end of the first round talent at the wr position at the same level all the way to the third.
You can't justify this trade by pointing out that the Patriots have two first round picks. Yes, they have those picks but that doesn't make their second round pick worthless. Their second round pick has the same value if they have 0 picks in the first round or 30 picks in the first round. However you want to spin it, Welker is not worth a 2nd-rounder. And, even though the Pats don't have to pick up his contract, they have to pay him. I'm not saying he's gonna make a killing but, whatever they pay is going to be too much. Welker will fit right in with the line-up of no name WRs on the Patriots right now. Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney, Wes Welker. . . peas in a mediocre pod.
Or they think they found the next Troy brown. The pats are an established sb caliber team. I think people forget we are the 2001 pats. They are like a puzzle with the core done, that needs to add a few things. We are like a puzzle with only a few pieces done. They have a ton of cap space, 2 first round picks and 4 extra mid rounders. They will get this kid for 1.5 which is a good signing for there system.
Typical Patriots fan reasoning. Just name the players the Patriots got and then say they'll win the division. Air tight logic. Meanwhile, why put Brady in that group? He was already on the team.
