Honestly, I think its asking a lot of Chad (and any starting qb for that matter) to have all of the responsibilities that come with the starting QB as well as mentoring a guy who the organization wants to eventually take your own job.

Also, the roster spot argument is nonsense since this team is going to be carrying 3 QBs regardless. I know Vinny is extremely old and is pretty much washed up, but how good a QB do you honestly expect to get. No half decent backup QB is going to come to a situation where there are going to have to compete just to avoid being the #3 QB. The top FA quarterbacks (Bledsoe, etc.) wouldn't sign into a situation like that.

With his ties to the area, Vinny would be willing to come for the veteran minimum. Unless you want to go with an unproven qb at the #3 spot (which with an unproven #2 is just asking for trouble), Vinny is probably the cheapest option available and has proven his worth as a mentor.

I am very interested to see what they are going to do w/ Smith. I do want to see him play more QB in preseason. From the little I saw last preseason I really liked what i saw.

Vinny, Brad, or Kerry are 3 possible choices.

I don't know who I rather have. Maybe Vinny because, although he has never played under Mangini and his staff, has more knowledge with how the Jets work.

In 2005 Vinny came after Chad was hurt so I don't think it is really a trend.

There's a reason Brad Smith entered the draft as a WR, he's just not a good enough QB.

The guy is what he is, and athletic WR who can be used in gimmick plays as well. No sense relying on him to be the emergency QB too. Just pick up a vet.

He played well in limited duty in preseason, I have seen more out of Smith to tell me he can play QB at this level than Jared Lorenzen.

We need to do this so that when we have the playoff game in hand against the pats, we can bring in our 3rd string QB Vinny to take a knee.

Yeah, Brad Smith's 2-for-4, 13 yd preseason performance is a sure sign he's ready for the big time.

Also, I don't see how Jared Lorenzen fits into this argument (then again, I don't see how he fits into many things), but he had a very nice preseason with 24-for-39 (61.5%), 234 yards, including some time with the first unit. The guy is unflappable in the pocket and has shown surprising accuracy. Certainly not starter material right now, but we're not asking him to be that.

Anyway, back on task, Smith is not a good quarterback. No sense messing with him.

You can't use stats, did you see him play? I am not one to get carried away by preseason games but he didn't even practice at QBa nd the threw him in there and he looked very good. I said I want to see more of him to see if he can be a QB in this league. I love what I saw and I want to see more.

Can't use stats my ass, they guy only threw 4 passes. There's no way to look that impressive in that small a sample. I'm basing my point of view off of his entire college career. Even with his fantastic mobility, he's just never been a good enough passer to succeed as a QB.

I love what he brings to the table right now. He can run, he's developing into a dependable WR, and he does have a strong enough arm to be utilized on trick plays. But I just think it would be a waste of the team's time to give him a really serious look at QB.

Brad Smith is the last person I want to see at number 3 QB. Rather have Vinny, honestly.

His presence, the way he commnaded the offense- it was more than stats and he never eevn practiced at QB. I'd like tos e what he can do if he gets some reps in practice.

Unless he was glowing and could levitate from the huddle to the the line of scrimmage, I don't see how much of a "presence" the guy can have in garbage time of a preseason game. 3rd teamers have come-from-behind exhibition game wins all the time, it doesn't mean much. Especially from a guy with a reputation as being easily rattled in college.

Why are you so concerend about our #3 QB? you clearly don't watch the Jets as closely as I do, trust my opinion. Worry about your mess of a team and less about our team.

  17. I live for the day there are finally nowhere Vinny posts on any jets boards.

I certainly appreciate his contributions to the franchise, and his obvious tie to the region...but c'mon, why can't the guy just retire and us stop talking about him like he's god?

Oh, get off your high fucking horse. Smith is a shitty QB, there is a reason he wasn't drafted as one. He was terrible in college and would be horrendous in the NFL. Stop talking out of your ass.

Smith only set like 40 different passing and rushing records, all while playing for a crappy team in a major conferenece. Wow! He SUCKS!
