    EARLY SUNDAY MORNING ONE-LINERS

The release of LB Joey Porter isn't going down well among his former teammates: "[Alan] Faneca called me, some of the veteran guys, my phone has been blowing up like, 'What the hell are we doing?'" said WR Hines Ward. "A lot of guys are questioning what's going on, kind of worried about the makeup of this team, where we are actually going to go."

The Browns, Bengals, and Dolphins are believed to be interested in LB Joey Porter.

The Cardinals have re-signed RB Marcel Shipp and S Hanik Milligan.

The "real" media has yet to realize that Rain Man could be in big trouble under the Personal Conduct Policy for failing to disclose his February 2006 and March 2006 arrests.

Could WR Joe Horn be heading to Atlanta?

The Lions are hosting RB T.J. Duckett on Sunday.

The Lions have shown interest in CB Shawn Springs.

The Texans re-signed OT Ephraim Salaam to a three-year deal.

The Colts might be re-signing LB Rob Morris.

Jags S Deon Grant is meeting with the Saints on Sunday and the Seahawks on Tuesday.

Free-agent OL Seth McKinney visited Cleveland on Saturday.

The Saints have re-signed OT Jon Stinchcomb.

The Jets are expected to release WR Justin McCareins.

RB Corey Dillon would like to play for the Ravens.

    And the Jets.

I read that in this morning's Star-Ledger also, but it's not a definite, just something the writers are surmising. We could save some money if we do and perhaps the CS thinks Brad Smith is ready to fill his role. I certainly do.

I don't know, I'm not into this releasing for the sake of releasing. We don't have anyone on the roster that has proven to be capable of filling the 3rd WR spot or providing depth behind the starters. What is the point of releasing him before there is a viable alternative?

I seriously doubt that the viable alternative is gonna cost 20 mil against the cap this year. Sign this mystery man and then release him then.

Its not addition by subtraction if it make the team worse. We don't have any depth at WR with him, we surely don't without him.

What does McCareins add to the team anyway? Drops?

Great news. He makes WAY too much money for the way he plays... With all of these cuts, we should make a run at a top free agent lineman or CB, if there are any left.

He's been dropping too many over the past 2 seasons. Is there any chance that he gets dealt for a 6th or 7th round choice?

He made a couple big plays this year when he was called upon. I'm not the biggest fan of his but he is better than anyone else we have right now to fill that spot. I just don't see the point in releasing him until we have a better option, it is not like we are strapped for the cap room right now. Sign someone better and I am all for releasing him, now it makes no sense.

McCareins had a couple of terrific catches this year, but the majority of his routes get snuffed out because he gets zero separation and doesn't seem to possess the ability to put on a burst of speed when he needs to. To make matters worse, he rarely extends himself for an innacurate throw, almost as if he's afraid of getting nicked up if he does. He's the anti-Coles in that regard.

Having him fill a roster slot and running routes is costly because, unless the ball is perfectly thrown and there are no defenders to interfere, only then will he make the catch. I suspect he's unwilling to take a considerable cut to remain on as a backup, which should really be his role on the team now. If he's unreceptive to that, I say we jettison him.

He did make a few big plays, but I know he also dropped a few deep (for Pennington) down field.

I do get what you're saying, though. I'd just rather see him off the team.

I love the versatility Brad Smith brings to this team but lets get real. His next meaningful route he runs will be his first. He is not a better option right now & counting on him to be a starter at WR should one of the top two gets hurt is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Yes - hopefully this means Brad Smith has shown enough to be a starter. I love this guy.

Oh I agree, he has dropped plenty & like Sec 227 said he is the anti Coles when it comes to going over the middle. The fact that he is the best option should tell us all we need to know about the depth of our WR corps but the fact remains that right now he is not only our best option to fill the 3rd WR position but our only option. If I'm the Jets GM I would be taking a long look at Kelley Washington, he has had some injury issues but might be a guy that has his best football ahead of him. I don't think he signed with anyone yet but I don't know I can't keep up with all these signings.
