I don't have all the facts on what he's done so far, so I'll leave it to "the saner, wiser heads" to reassure us chickenlittles that Mikey really is a good GM, and not just an accountant.
His best moves so far are the hiring of Mangini, the drafting of Mangold & the resigning of Cotchery.. The worst move was the trade for Barlow.. The jury is still out, it has only been one year.
I'd go with Kimo has the worst move... But how about Bryan Thomas? Got him at a relatively good value considering he could of make a lot more this offseason with all the money that's going around... Getting Nick Mangold for John Abraham?
I'm no genious but what about this draft: D'Brickshaw Ferguson Nick Mangold Brad Smith Leon Washington We gained two players who will start on our O-Line for years to come. Although D'Brick struggled some in his first year he played one of the hardest postions in football, LT. It is especially hard in the AFC East where you have to play against Seymour, Taylor, Schobel who have all been probowlers. Mangold is the emerging leader of our O-Line and will be a perennial probowler in a few years. He is already one of the better centers in the AFC. Leon Washington was a low round pick who suprised us all by coming in and being extremely effective. In fact, he was so effective that some of us want him to be our starting running back next year. That is pretty impressive for a low pick. Brad Smith provided us everything this year especially on special teams. He was extremely good on punt coverage and made tons of tackles. In FA he didn't sign that many great people. However, we did sign Andre Dyson who has been pretty solid and provided some stability at the cornerback position. He also brought in Poteat at the cornerback position late in the year to solidify the position for a run to the playoffs. One of his biggest moves came this offseason before FA started. He signed Cotchery to a long term extension. This gives us two solid receivers for Pennington or whoever else are QB is to throw to.
Thomas was another good move but I'll stick with Barlow being the worst move, we didn't give up a draft pick for him..
I'll give Tannenbaum credit for Dyson and Poteat, and also for Smith and Washington. What else you got? Mangold he doesn't credit for. They let Mawae go and they were lucky that Nick, the top-rated center in the draft, was still there. The Ferguson pick can not be credited yet either. How hard is it to screw up a top 5 pick? And, who knows that he didn't? Ferguson was OK and if he improves each year, then I will give him credit. But if he continues to be a turnstile for the leagues better ends and Cutler turns into an All-Pro...
but like i said in another post we got dyson by default.. he was hurt the entire year last year had no real value.
Credit for locking up Cotchery and Bryan Thomas? Both could of gotten loads more money had they gone on the market? Their were about 5 other teams interested in him...He chose the Jets, that is a weak argument hydro, i'd expect better from you.
Face it, any idot GM can blow his wad in FA. It does not take dicipline to do that. Just look at the Redskins. Bringing in FA big money talent does not necessiarly equate to wins and you run a high risk of busting your cap. Some of our best FA acquisitions have been reasonable $$ FAs, Cox or Kendall for example. Tangini will look for value which is what they have said all along. We have too many holes to be dropping our wads to add just one or two guys. Plus we don't want to get into a situation where we are not able to resign our own superstars in the near furture...ie Kerry Rhodes. Be patient, we will get quality and value.
Ecko, I will accept your optimistic viewpoint for the evening in the hopes it will allow me to get some sleep. While I know it won't happen, I will dream of returning to the site tomorrow and reading about the Jets signing Daniel Graham, or Porter or even Kyle Brady.
i cant find the article he had 3 teams that wanted him. us and two others he played for before Seattle, and the Titans.. and We gave him the highest offer.. teams were not exactly beating down dyson 's door last year. the year before that was a different situation he was a hot commodity.
He broke the bank for Kimo, he gave up the farm for Barlow, Kassel and Chatham sucked, Dyson was luck (default), Mangold he gets not credit for because he just woke up and said, "hey lets cut Mawae because I can", They should have reached for Vernon Davis or monumentally reached for Cutler as well at #4, he missed drafting Colston with the #4 pick, They missed Addai, Hester, Anderson, McNeil. Does that sum up Tannenbaum's mistakes so far or what.................. The first day of free agency and it is complete idiocy on this forum. I think I am out of here before my IQ goes down to dangerous levels.
So doesn't that make the move by Tanny that much more impressive. He found a player who had been hurt and saw that he could make a difference on our team. Plus, he was pursued by multiple teams.
u can say that if you want.. look im not knocking the man or begging for him to be fired.. im just telling it like i see it. avg FA player (so far). Big time Draft Day player.
To me all this shows is our previous regime wasn't as bad as people made them out to be and our current wasn't as great as some people were making them out to be mainly just because they weren't the past regime. Bottom line is that FA is not the end all be all of making your team. I too would've had like to seen us make a few moves but the only true way to judge is see how the team plays not jump on each individual move. Tangini had a good draft, had a few decent FA signings last year, and a few bad ones. That to me is the norm for the Jets. Just like with the previous regime who Tannenbaum learned under we didn't break the bank on any of the FAs who didn't work out really so they were attempts to help the team that failed. Every team has 'em. So what is my point. My point is just relax and look at the big picture and why you don't have to love every move and every move made might not be a winner, the true judge of these guys is does the team improve from year to year and if for some reason they don't is there an actual reason for (i.e. injuries) or was it due to the moves the FO made. That was why I liked the previous regime and so far, why I have faith in the current one. I think we are in good hands and while I don't like all the moves they made I'm not going to get worked up over the ones I don't agree with or don't workout because that happens to every team.
He has done an excellent job in FA so far. last year we got alot of bang for the buck and I like that we aren't overpaying for high priced FAs so far this young FA period. His worst move was giving up a 4th rounder for Barlow but he did rook Washington and get an extra 2nd rounder for us this year. Tannenbaum has done an excellent job so far as our GM.
Why!? Anyway, it wasn't an "optimistic viewpoint." You asked a simple question and I gave you answers along with everyone else. Locking up players who did well in your system for both offense and defense isn't an "optimistic viewpoint." Bryan signed for 5yr/$25 mil...I'm pretty sure he could of gotten another 5 million in bonuses and/or salary had he tested the market... And locking up Cotchery was huge...It just makes sense, common sense, not optimism.
