I don't think you do. you are the one who took it off course. the article said the jets are wary o giving Thomas a long term deal at 29 and you brought up ty law as if that had anything to do w/ this. law was a 1 year player, he had a bonus they were never going to pay last yera so he was here for a year. thomas would b a long term, expensive player. Then you brought up 3 relatively inexpensive guys from last year to further your point and those guys were all stop gap players.
My hope is that San fran spends so much to sign this guy,. that they limit themselves from signing anyone else. Perhaps at that point we could take a shot at Dielman or Stienbach
whats wrong with you man? it clearly says: concerned about his age? his price tag? obviously we werent concerned about barlows age (27) or his price tag (one of the highest paid rb's in the ENTIRE NFL, plus we gave up a 4th round pick to get him). its pretty easy to say "barlow was a stopgap player" after watching him suck in new york. thats just stupid man. we brought him in to become our new starter, we didnt give up a 4th round pick and all the money just to cut him a year later. especially not with the depth we had at RB
Hutchinsin/Star-Ledger is usually accurate, but so is Adam Shefter so who knows. Would love to land Adalius this weekend but I doubt it...
unless they give him a 1 year contract at 40+ million....look for them to sign 1 or even 2 more big time FAs
You don't expect to trade a fourth round pick and get a starting RB. While that was the hope when they brought him here it didn't work out and since in a trade there is no signing bonus, the Jets could cut him with no negative cap impact.
29 isn't that young but you can't just be young players and expect to be a really good team. If the price is to high and we don't end up with him, it's not the end of the world, but I think it's a mistake not to go after him.
okay, what's your point? The Jets had the cap room and traded a 4th round pick for a guy they hoped could be a starter. At that point, his contract number was irrelevant. You can't carry cap money forward. Also in trading for him the Jets eliminated any negative impact of cutting him because all his salary was non-guaranteed. I really don't see how you are going to compare a guy like Barlow who was a stop-gap / hopeful starter with all non-guaranteed money to a guy like Adalius Thomas who is going to get a big signing bonus and be expected to be an impact player from the first time he steps onto the field. (Not to mention the fact that Thomas was a top performer this past season, while Barlow was a part-time, non-impact RB in SF.)
We didn't invest a ton of money in barlow and the others, Thomas we'd be investing a huge SB and big contract. Barlow wasn't brought in to be the heir to Curtis, he was a stop gap player.
There is no way he was our highest paid player last year and salary isn't as important as SB and we didn't have to give him any guaranteed money.
i dont care if he received a signing bonus or not, the guy was probably the highest paid running back in the nfl last season i would guess. seeing that tomlinson made only 5.0 million compared to barlow's 8.1 million
Didn't Steinbach say he wanted to play for the Bears or someone not the Jets. I'm guessing AT goes to SF and Tennessee is going to get Clements, so that leaves the Jets with no one. Hopefully we just resign the guys we want to keep and draft some blue chip players and then make a push next year after other teams made a splash.
Barlow made $2.5 mil last year so stop making things up and again even if he made more as long as it wasn't tied into guaranteed money then there is no risk as we can cut him w/ no penalty to our cap. http://blog.instantactionsports.com/2006/08/22/kevan-barlow-became-the-newest-jet
Barlow did not get $8.1mm...that number is not correct. He received $8.1mm in cash in 2004 when he signed his 5-year, $20mm deal which included a $6.5mm signing bonus. 2004: $1.545mm salary, $6.5mm bonus = $8.1mm 2005: ??? 2006: $1.5mm (according to TGG) 2007: $3.25mm (according to the below link) 2008: $4.0mm Assuming the numbers for 2007 and 2008 are correct, it would have been impossible under the widely reported potential full value of his contract ($20mm) for Barlow to have made $8mm last season. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache...low+contract+details&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us
If we are talking about salary and Barlow and Thomas then there really isn't a comparison. We were able to bring Barlow in for a test drive because there aren't any salary cap repercussions for cutting a guy you traded for. Now if Thomas doesn't work out and you want to cut him after a season(or two even) there will be a MASSIVE amount of dead money on our cap. So for you to make comparisons to Barlow, Kimo or any other guy on the roster who could be a hold the fort guy and then cut without severe consequences is baseless.
