Both these linebackers are about 6'1'" give or take a few in both directions both weigh about 240. Would these guys be good additions for the OLB position? Not to mention the key point that I discovered about these guys is that they both ran 4.4's in the 40 at the combine. I mean maybe there height is not there but they dam sure have the speed we are looking for. THIS THREAD IS NOW OPEN FOR DISCUSSION.............
They have the speed, but neither would be a very good fit as a 3-4 rusher. Both are probably coverage guys in 4-3s, though Shaw was pretty good as a rusher when he was at PSU (he played End last year if I'm not mistaken).
most of these guys are prototype 4-3 LB's. ideal OLB's are around the size of smallish 4-3 DE's. height around 6 ft 2 1/2-6ft 5 weigh anywhere from 240-260. either way Spencer has struck me as a nice fit. not sure he'll be available.
Like 6-2 or above is probably the best height. 250+ lbs and probably a speed anywhere under 4.75 would be good. IDEALY it would be something like 6-5, 260, 4.60.
I hope this doesnt seem like a stupid question but as far as the OLB postion wether its 3-4 or 4-3. why would you need different specifications for there height weight speed etc... Like for instance the LBs in a 4-3 are shorter and faster and the LBs for 3-4 are taller and a bit slower..
At least one part of why you want bigger, stronger, but crazy athletes at 3-4 OLB is because they have to take on O-linemen more often to rush the passer. 4-3 guys are asked to drop into coverage more often, as well as give support in the run game. So those guys tend to be shorter, quicker, and a little bit more compact (Vilma, DJ Williams, and AJ Hawk are perfect examples).
Tim Shaw, as others have said, is way too small to play a 3-4 OLB and would be blocked easily by any athletic OT. He did play a little DE last year, but was listed as and played mostly at 4-3 OLB.
i know last year there was talk of how we were gonna selet aj hawk with our pick. now say we did we would have be suck with quote unquote two undersized linebackers. vilma/hawk
