Morning Papers: Promoter Tried To Take Pacman's Money
Posted Feb 22nd 2007 7:06AM by JJ Cooper
    Filed under: Titans, AFC South

We may never know exactly what happened at the Minxx strip club Monday morning, but every day we get a few more details.

A search warrant helps shed a little more light on the incident today, as police wanted to search the hotel room of the promoter of the Sunday night/Monday morning strip club event. Police wanted to see if he had a garbage bag full of $81,000 of Jones' money that had been brought to the club.

Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently Jones showed up to the club with $81,000 in a garbage bag like a strip club santa.

Jones and rapper Nelly has thrown hundreds of the $1 bills in the air for the strippers--but according to the warrant, the money wasn't for the strippers to keep. So when the promoter, Chris Mitchell, told the girls to take the money, and when some of the strippers grabbed the trash bag of money, Jones got angry and a fight started. At that point, Mitchell grabbed the money and took off. Mitchell got away with the cash in the chaos while a woman with Jones started fighting with one of the strippers.
Police recovered the cash from Mitchell's hotel room. Reports today also add details about the role of a woman with Jones had in the fight. The owner of the strip club says that she hit a bouncer over the head with a bottle, while Jones also attacked the guard.

The Tennessean talked to Jones' attorney again. But after he was vehement on Tuesday in his denials that Jones had anything to do with the fight/shooting, he didn't have much to say when asked yesterday.

"I have stated my understanding of what occurred as it relates to Mr. Jones,'' Robinson said Wednesday. "Now we are going to let the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department continue with their investigation and will continue to cooperate with them in the event they need to speak to Mr. Jones. We are confident the findings of their investigation will be consistent with our findings.''
While Sporting News radio has reported about Jones' biting a bouncer, none of the newspapers have reported that detail.

Police seize Titans CB Jones' $81,000
Authorities: Money sparked melee that led to shooting
    Posted: Thursday February 22, 2007 2:38PM; Updated: Thursday February 22, 2007 2:39PM

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Police seized $81,020 in cash belonging to pro football player Adam "Pacman" Jones, which they said sparked a melee and a triple shooting at a strip club over the weekend, court documents show.

Jones, a cornerback with the Tennessee Titans, was showering more than 40 strippers onstage at Minxx Gentlemen's Club & Lounge early Monday with the cash "intended as a visual effect," according to a search warrant. But a scuffle broke out when the Houston promoter who hired the strippers told them to pick the money up.

The promoter, identified as Chris Mitchell, owner of "Harlem Knights," and a male associate took a plastic trash bag containing Jones' money and walked out the front door, the warrant says. Police recovered the money and two Breitling watches inside a safe at Mitchell's hotel room Monday morning.

Mitchell, according to the warrant, "admits that he took the money in the bag belonging to Jones because he thought it was for the dancers."

After Mitchell left the club, "a melee broke out," the warrant says.

"Jones became irate about the loss of his money, and the fact that girls were in a frenzy, picking up the money at their feet," the warrant says.

Later, a woman identified as a member of Jones' group fought with one of the strippers and security tried to break up the fight, it says. Jones told the guards to back off and reached behind his back "as if he were retrieving a weapon there."

Jones' entourage was moved outside, but the woman continued to fight, according to the warrant filed Wednesday in Clark County District in Las Vegas.

The woman hit a guard in the head with a champagne bottle and "began biting and screaming" when other guards tried to restrain her, the warrant says.

Minutes later, a valet told police that he heard shots fired near the front entrance and saw a black man with corn rows in his hair pointing a black semi-automatic handgun, it says. The man then fled.

The shots hit a female customer and two guards, one of whom remained in critical condition in a Las Vegas hospital. Aaron Cudworth, the guard hit with the champagne bottle, and the woman, were treated and released.

Police have described the suspected shooter as last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. As of Thursday morning, police said he was still at large.

Jones' lawyer, Worrick Robinson, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Jones did not know anyone involved in the shooting and was interviewed by local authorities as a witness, not as a suspect. Police have not said Jones is a person of interest in the case.

Robinson could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

Jones has faced criminal charges three times since the Tennessee Titans made the cornerback the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft _ all involving incidents at nightclubs in Tennessee.

The cornerback promised he had seen the inside of a courtroom for the last time Feb. 1, when a judge dismissed an assault charge filed by a woman who claimed Jones spit on her during an October nightclub altercation.

Charges in a confrontation with a club manager during a private party in July 2005 also have been dismissed.

Jones was ordered to stay out of trouble until July 5 if he wants his criminal record cleared of public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges for an August arrest in the Nashville suburb of Murfreesboro.

Robinson has said he didn't think the Las Vegas incident violated the judge's order.

My comments at the beginning of this thread were based on reactions to the original articles posted. After reading/hearing the story unfolding, it does sound like he is a scumbag. I still think the initial reaction to the articles was overblown without the details that followed.

    Exactly.

It was ridiculous to see how many people jumped on this and had SO much to say before the whole story was out.

    What if they were wrong?

Don't be so quick to judge is what I'm thinking your message was, and I could not agree more.

I seriously don't get how anyone could defend Pacman Jones, before OR after this incident in Vegas. Why would you ignore history?

i dont think i'm trying to defend him. i could give two shits about him. i just thought the reactions to the articles were unjustified regardless of what his past was.

The article said he was there, walked out, a shooting happened and that he was cooperating with the police as a witness. Then people started going crazy.

Whatever - I'm done with this stupid thread.

Pacman Jones has hired the law firm who defended Ray Lewis and Jamal Lewis.
Jones hasn't been formally charged with anything, but this could be a tacit admission that he expects the issue won't be going away anytime soon.

Living in Las Vegas and knowing what I know I'd say Pac Man is going to need to find a way to resurect Johnny Cochrane in order to avoid going to prison.

I have been reading the Tennessee newspapers and all the fans want this guy out of Nashville. The problem is if this piece of shit somehow avoids jailtime some other team will sign the guy. Somebody like Al Davis, Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones seem like prime candidates. Imagine that secondary in Washington with Pac Man and Sean Taylor. Two guys who both belong in jail.

some posters here love to stand on their bully pulpit and deride Adam Pacman Jones, but if you think he'll be thrown out of the league you're being naieve.

As long as Pacman is making big plays and picking off Eli Manning to set up game winning field goals, HE"S NOT GOING ANYWHERE. Some older sports fans pine for the good ole' days of Joe Dimaggio and the perfect sports figures but cmon guys, get real.

As Charles Barkley once said, "I am not a role model". Do we really think that 10 years from now athletes will be saints? no way! In 10 years this kind of violence and disregard for the law will be commonplace amongst athletes, so for better or worse, GET USED TO IT. Youth and Money do not mix well. Thats a societal problem and its not something that the NFL or NBA can fix

The state of the American Athlete is constantly evolving, as is the culture that surrounds it. These athletes who think the law doesn't apply to them are simply the result of the mixture of youth, money and an increasingly violent black culture

I myself cannot kill black culture because i love rap and black comedy and i would be a hypocrite to do so. The point i gotta make is...These issues arise from 20-something kids getting boatloads of money thrown at them and thinking the rules dont apply to them. Its not their fault, its society at large's fault.

Athletes are not role models! If people were really disgusted with them, we would boycott these league, and we all know that ain't happening. We fed the monster, now we're gonna cry when it goes berzerk?

If he is cut, the Jets must go after this guy. Mangini could make this guy a shut downer corner.
