Actually, he called me on my cell; he's in Tallahassee right now. Anyway, I had just finished talking with Kevin Kolb, the QB from the Houston Cougars. I had liked this guy ever since he had come out of high school. I asked him how did Conference USA help him out in terms of competition. He said that playing out of conference against teams like Miami and Oklahoma State was good for him. I asked him to explain how he did so well as a true freshman (he was rated below Chris Leak and Kyle Wright when he came out of high school), bad in his sophomore and junior year, and then came out with 30 TD's in his senior year? He said, after having such a successful freshman year, he thought that he could take the team on his shoulders and tried to do too much. He went on to say that in his senior year, he matured and realized that he had other players on the team that could help the team accomplish the common goal of success.

Doesn't say a lot for him that it took 2 years to work that out, but I guess it's understandable for a young guy to get a bit cocky when he's come out and shown what he's capable of.

Eric Mangini had just gotten off of the podium. Of course I had to get my Leon questions in. He said that he was very impressed with Leon this past season. He mentioned that Leon made a lot of mistakes during mini camp and then eventually had gotten out of his funk. The question was asked about Leon being a fulltime starter, and Mangini said that he was going to play the guy who he thought gave the team the best shot to win. He said that if in one week a guy was hot, he was going with him, in another situation he would go with a committee. He kept on talking about how the draft meant so much to a team trying to build, so I thought that it opened the door for me to ask him about sacrificing draft picks, in addition to giving up a lot of money to bring in another player (set up question), ala Michael Turner. Mangini went on to say that you want to be able to build with both free agency and the draft; "You want to be able to mesh the two" was his direct words. That leads me to believe that he may just go after Turner. Troy Smith is on the podium, so I'll be right back!
I caught the tale end of the Tony Hunt interview. The only part I caught was when they asked him what type of character guy he was. He said that he is a fun guy and a team player. Sorry I missed what had come earlier, but I was doing a radio interview for a station in Gainesville for 25 minutes, and then remembered that I had left my keys at the hotel. I had to go back and get them! My house and car keys are on there and my car is at the airport in Jacksonville!!! On my way back, I saw the Pittsburgh Steelers television station interviewing Syvelle Newton, WR, South Carolina; I think that he is gonna be a hella playa!!
