    Realistically!!

what signs do we need to see either in early FA or after the draft to start talking SB for next years team?

Personally, I think a free agent signing or 2, RB and CB and we are right back up there. If that is followed up by another good draft class like last years.. we could definitely advance past the WC round of the playoffs.

barring key injuries (CHAD), I firmly expect us to make the playoffs next year.

We need to solidify both lines, and add an edge rusher and I really think we could be in the Superbowl talk. We have a really young team in terms of starters right now though, so we have some time before analysts will consider us serious contenders.

Nothing we do this spring is going to make me feel like we're super bowl bound.

Earliest chance for that is when I see things jelling in camp next year. That would be Kellen Clemens playing like a pro, a stud RB or really good RBBC forming up, clear evidence that the defensive and offensive lines were going to be superior and no heavy injuries to weight things down.

we need more consistent QB performance. we need better run blocking. we need to create more turnovers. we need more sacks

we need alot before id start talking super bowl. but we could achieve alot within 1-2 yrs actually.

but whether it actually happens depends on not only the right decisions to be made, but players to perform.

id say were a middle of the pack team right now.

The key is to build a team that has a chance to compete for a super bowl every year. Not just a one and done like the redskins go for. A team that through the draft and development is able to sustain itself year after year. The key to this is the line play on both sides of the ball. If you can win the line of scrimmage battle you can be competitive every year.

If you look at the Eagles, Broncos, Patriots and Steelers they are probably the four organizations that you want to follow. Obviously they all do things a little differently but all of these organizations have a few things in common. They have a plan to build a team through the draft and developing their own players. They rarely throw money at another teams free agents. They have stability at the coaching situation.

They all have outstanding offensive lines (Steelers line took a step backwards). They all have the ability to rush the passer or stop the run. Mcnabb, Brady, Big Ben and Cutler are all solid to great qb's. The verdict is still out on Big Ben and Cutler but I think there are 15-20 teams that wouldn't mind having either one of them. So they all drafted qb's and developed them in their system over time.

My point is that to get good and stay good you need to have a very good line and a very good front seven. You need to have a qb who can win and you need to have a good head coach who has job security.

Clearly the Jets are on the right path with Mangini and Tannenbaum and if they keep doing what they're doing we should be competitive for years to come. But I would say that we shouldn't go into next season hoping that we can win the SB this year, be happy with another solid off season and more progress. We might not win as many games because of the schedule but the team should get much better with improvements on the lines and all of the players having a year of experience with the coaching staff.

I agree with that. The two most important things are addressing both lines and then a CB and RB. Let's not forget that last year we had all new coaches with a new offense and defense. Now, with one year of experience with a new system on both sides, we can only get better. And Pennington shoulder should get better after one more year.

The last couple of times we were mentioned in Super Bowl talks we didn't even make the playoffs. The year after the AFC championship game, the year after Oakland loss and the loss against Pittsburgh.

Maybe we will never make it to the SB but at least we can talk and dream about it. the 99 season went down with Vinny's injury. Parcells took a big gamble in not having a good back up. He had to go with Mirer and then switched to Lucas. Herm will never make it to the SB. I think Mangini gives us the best chance. He was definitely better in his first year than Bellicheck and look what happened in NE.

I agree. I think free agency is the real key this off season. I think we have enough young players, but should add some key vets to our Corps. Vets can be hard headed though, so we need to find the right personnel for our young coaching staff.

The Jets definitely need to get a pass-rushing DE/OLB in the draft. Get a solid CB to play opposite Dyson. They need a NT to take up space. And most importantly, the need a franchise RB. I would also like to see a new FB or Askew raise his game and another guard. And possibly a WR for depth. If all of these positions are dealt with and the JETS can get some chemistry going in training camp and the preseason, there is no reason why they can't be in the discussion as contenders for the SUPER BOWL.

    1. A true 3-4 DT
    2. Big time run blocker at RG and/or RT

The DT frees up Ellis and Robertson to be more effective pass rushers and keeps the OL of Vilma. Better run blocking will allow for a much improved running game, even if the backs are Houston and Washington. This makes Chad's excellent play action viable, and the passing game more consistant.

These should be our first two picks in the draft, unless the needs are filled in FA. With both lines solidified, we'll have as good a shot as anyone at making it to the SB.

Pouha may be the big NT we need. Too bad he was hurt last year and couldn't play but that only proves that you need more than one good NT in case one goes down with an injury.

You could not be more right. Everyone who is saying RB this ad CB that misses the point. Football basics are run and stop the run. Once we can do that well then we can start worrying more about other positions.

That's indisputably true. However the results last year were weird with strong rush defenses not represented heavily in the playoffs and the super bowl won by a team with a really bad rush defense.

i dont think we can do ANYTHING in FA to look like a SB team. It's all about during the season. If we can improve our run game and develop a top 10 rushing attack. And if we can consistently CONSISTENTLY stop the run and have a good overall defense we can be a superbowl team. No i repeat NO free agent is gonna drastically change either of these two things. It's all gonna be about playing to potential and the scheme.

Im so superstitious that a thread like this makes me fear for the next 1/2 century. Please stop! Havent we learned by now that the Jets cant just walk over the competition to the promise land. There has to be drama, high's,low's,tears, and Rantings on the level of a crazy person before there will be glory! No super bowl talk ,its just not right.

great responses from all of you, I just felt that the league is balanced enough, with enough parity for any team to be a contender with the right break here or their. I still feel that Sean Payton gave the Bears the game in the last NFC title bout. The saints were the second worst team in the league (not withstanding the enormous effects of katrina the yr before)

It seems our coaches are smart enough, and clearly work hard enough to get it done.

We could be just a player or 2 away from a AFC title game with the Colts next year.

Can Jets' really win SB with Chad at QB ? Forget about making it to the SB, you gotta win it....

Maybe, but only if Jets' develop a dominant ground game. Chad is most effective with a potent running attack, which makes teams have to bite on his great play/action fakes. So developing a dominant OL & having a breakaway RB are primary needs. With a little defensive improvement added, offense can & will have to carry team....for Jets' to have immediate success. Really .....I would try to develop QB of the future asap (Clemens). Dominant blocking TE also needed.
