I know, I know, another FA thread, but....Davis is too freakin big to be a LT anymore, but what about him as a RT or RG? He's durable, missing only 5 games in 6 years, and he's a good run blocker. He's probably better suited as a RG now, but is still fast enough to play RT too. At 6'6, 366, he does need to drop 15 to 20 pounds, but he can run block. I really have no clue why AZ is letting him go FA, unless...... He isn't worth a franchise tag as a LT, which may be why the Cards are letting him walk, but he'd add some brute strength to the right side of our O line. This is a signing that would solve a gaping hole at RT (until and unless Clement is signed) and allow us to draft to other need/BAP strategies. Here's what I'm thinking... renog Barrett and draft a CB. Go DE or NT early in the draft. Maybe get that edge rusher DE/OLB guy with our first rounder, letting Barton walk. I really think we need to address at least one of our need positions in FA. Davis would fill the need at an improved run blocking O line. I see it as either him or Clements the CB from Buffalo. By filling the O line or CB spot via FA, we can get what we need in the draft to fix the D line and upgrade at LB. Thoughts?
Sounds good to me....we'll find out whether or not the front office shares your views on Davis in the next 4 weeks, but it wouldn't be a bad signing. Cheap, still in his prime, may be an upgrade at the guard position. I don't think the Jets will draft OL in the first couple of rounds this year. Last year, it was the # 1 need and there were a couple of blue-chippers there for the taking. This year, I think the Jets hit the defensive front seven early and often with CB and RB a possibility...just my opinion
davis is going to cost a lot of money but he will be worth it. we need run blocking OL and that is davis specialty. he will thrive in are coaching system
I'd love this signing if he's willing to do the position change. He seems almost too perfect a fit for what we need on the line right now.
I'm thinking this could be the sort of "less than big splash" FA signing this regime might go for. He's cheaper than Clements by a long shot, and we could draft a CB. Lower cap hit, and drafting for the future and present at the same time. Yeah, Davis is still young, and could be part of the Mangold-Ferguson core of the O line for the next 5 years. Funny... an above average TE like Graham gets 3 threads, but a solid (and cheaper) signing like this it would seem, no one is very interested in. Personally, I think Davis would upgrade this team significantly more than a TE like Graham would, but he seems to be the hot topic. Games are won and lost with the front 5 on O, and the front 7 on D, but it's the so called skill positiops so many people seem to get enamored with. Take a lesson from the Pats... take care of the guys in the trenches, and you win. So called playmakers will get you where Oakland is. Jordan, Moss, Porter and the offense still sucks.
He won't be cheap, but I'm sure you had some typo's in this post, or at least I hope you did. Did you mean 2.8 mil? I don't know what his contract was last year, and he will be expensive, he will still much cheaper than Clements from Buffalo. With Samuel now tagged, we will either renogotiate Barrett's contract, or bite the bullet and pay him 3 mil, while drafting a CB pretty early as his replacement. This may well be a cheaper way to go in the long run. This regime did show us that they understand the need for a solid O line, but at the same time, they drafted to need.... we had no LT or C. I hope they continue to focus on the trenches. Keep Barrett this year, whther or not they can renegotiate his contract, get Davis, draft D line and a CB. The luxury pick is an OLB that can pass rush. They can move Hobson inside, let Barton go, and get a stud OLB. In my dream world of playing Jets GM, this is what my game plan would be.
he'll be cheaper than you think... he's not going to get as many looks as people think. But, we also already have a left tackle. Unless you plan on moving him to the right side (which I think would benefit him) he's not worth it. Ellis " The Beatings Will Continue Until Moral Improves " - sounds like Mangini's camp - I LIKE!!!
i was saying this a while ago...instead of wasting a pick in the draft, we should look to build from what is already at our choosing...L davis is a mammoth of a man with great skills...if mangini can whip him into shape, and hone his skills as a blocker, we could resusitate him career id feel comfortable with Davis guarding my back side, hes there, hes good, so lets give it a shot....now we can focus on what we really need...the DT, LB, RB, and CB positions.... steinbeck shouldnt be ignored either....even if Davis is signed
I'd take a chance on this guy and move him to guard. We need a gigantic mauler at guard to replace Moore. He obviously has first-round talent and maybe our coaches could revamp his career even though I don't think he's been that bad a player.
I dont think anybody from that AZ line can run block. Just because he is really fat doesnt mean he can run block well.
When the O line is as bad as the Card's O line is, the running game won't work with just one good run blocker. Davis CAN run block, but he's gotten too big to handle speed rushers at the LT position. I think he could play RT, since he has outside help from the TE for any speed rushers. I don't think any team will sign him to a big LT sort of contract though. That should keep his cost to sign a bit lower. Stiebach is another guy that as mentioned would be a nice addition.
I think he would be a GREAT addition. not good but GREAT addition. This is exactly what our O-line needs. A big force who can create holes for the running game. I honestly dont think he'll cost that much. He's really fallen off the map since his rookie year. Put him at RT or RG and i think he could do wonders. SIGN HIM TANGINI!
I'm with Plasticsloth...Davis would be a GREAT addition. If when the offseason is over, we come out with Leonard Davis, I would consider the Jets a better team, regardless of the other signings/cuts. Even if it takes 2 years/45 mil+
plus if he drops 15-20 pounds (which he will HAVE to do), then he can also be a back-up LT incase Brick gets nicked. Get him. edit: ...and if he has a brother, get him too. Or a BIG ugly sister, like Mangolds, get her too.
