With our young, hungry coaching staff...I'm starting to wonder why the Jets have not aggressively went after this guy as defensive coordinator. He's a fiery guy, great motivator, and one of the greatest linebackers of all time. Plus, as a coach/assistant he's spent almost his whole time in a 3-4 with Mike Nolan in SF. He's seen as one of the best young up and coming coaches in this league, and is already highly thought of as a head coach. Yet I hear nothing about the Jets pursuing this guy. I like Sutton for the progress we made in the 3-4, but as we get younger with this years draft and more athletic guys who fit the scheme better come in...this guy would be perfect to coach them up and handle the defense. Thoughts?
Isn't he on staff with another team? If so, that's why.. You can't hire another team's coaches for anything other than HC without the team's permission.
you cant negotiate with a guy who has the same position on another team. Horizontal changes never happen
He is with the 49ers. I think he interviewed for a head coaching job or at least was considered but I cannot remember which one.
Singletary is not the DC of the SF9ers. I think Nolan just hired the LB coach of the Chargers for that role. But Singletary may be the Asst. Head Coach or some fluky title like that which would make it hard for him to move to the Jets. That being said, I didn't see too much wrong with Sutton this year. The team started slow, but played well after the bye and down the stretch. Sure his team didn't beat the Pats in the finale, but I wouldn't put that loss on the defense necessarily. Give Sutton at least another year or two, and a squad with players that fit the 3-4, before we start questioning his ability. I went to the Vikings game this year, and was watching the pre-game. Sutton was one of the few guys on the field who was there watching the opposition practice before game time. Seems like a guy who has an attention to detail that Mangini would value.
It was the Dallas job. I don't know much about his coaching career from stop to stop, but he could be a pretty dominating figure leading the defense if it was at all possible. That could also be a negative as much as a positive.
