I've noticed that back in the days drafts use to be like 12 rounds does anyone know why they stopped them. i think like 1993 was the last year they did that. http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/teams/NYJ thats the link
Also, half the players getting drafted in the 10th and 11th rounds never even got signed... 7 rounds with UD FA's is a much better concept then wasting 6 rounds and maybe getting 3 good players out of them.
While the occasional gem was found in te late rounds ie: Keenan McCardell (12th round) Clyde Simmons (8th round) Tyrone Braxton (12th round) Seth Joyner (8th round) Steve DeBerg (10th round) most of the guys never even made it to camp.
Jets would always draft bums back then anyways. Guys from Slippery Rock State, Montana U and Carson Newman.
The drafts were even longer in the 60's and early 70's. The Jets did get lucky once back in 1975 when they used a 14th round draft selection on an unknown center named Joe Fields......for those who are too young to remember he went to several pro bowls and played 14 years.......
