The Jets spent a long time speaking to Anthony Spencer yesterday. I have a feeling he will be pick #25. #37 will be Tony Hunt. Pick #58 will be an OG like Josh Beekman from BC. Our 3rd rounder will be Ryan McBean. I also believe the Jets will make several trades to get back into the third round to grab Josh Wilson. I am glad the Jets didn't talk to every player and their mother like last years Senior Bowl.
1) I dont think the Jets will take another undersized corner, especially not in the 3rd round. 2) A younger version of Kevan Barlow in Tony Hunt is not worth a 2nd round pick, let alone our first one. 3) I like Spencer and Beekman alot.
wilson might work his way in the first with his forty, and were not done talking to players yet. i like when they talk to everyone, its how you find sleepers.
Know what ur saying before u write it bud. the only thing barlow and hunt have in common is their height and weight. when BArlow hit the draft one of his biggest knocks was his blocking skills which Hunt is great at. Hunts sophomore through senior year, he ran for 777, 1047, and 1386. Barlow's sophomore to senior year, he ran for 533, 630, 1053. Hunt has more experience and more talent coming out of college, is more proven coming out of college, and has played bigger and better big 10 defenses like Michigan and Ohio State for 3 years now as opposed to the weak big east where Barlow played.
In his college career, Kevan Barlow ran for 486 times for 2324 yards (4.78 yards per rush) and 20 touchdowns. Tony Hunt has rushed for 3320 yards on 654 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, not that significant a difference. Barlow was also a 3rd round pick, not a high second so forgive me for seeing a 6'2, 235lb running back who is too slow to get around the corners around the NFL and will most likely be a between the tackles runner and comparing him to our own 6'2, 235 running back who is too slow to get around the corners in the NFL and is a between the tackles runner. Penn State has had a ton of guys that have ran against the same defenses and put up better numbers flop in the NFL, up until Larry Johnson teams would specifically avoid PSU running backs. You mentioned the difference in teams they played in college, with to begin with doesn't garuntee much how about the difference in recruiting? Penn State has a huge offensive line led by a 1st round pick whereas when Barlow, a power runner who needs a larger offensive line was in college, there was 1 300 pounder on the Pitt roster, who did not play because he was a transfer player. I understand Penn State is a big time program and some guys may be big fans of Penn State, Notre Dame or a local like Rutgers but just because guys had success on someone's favorite college team doesn't mean they'll have a successful pro career.
I've watched Josh Wilson play every game for the past 3 years and although I think he's a good player I don't think he's a great fit for us. Strengths: Outstanding speed. First and foremost he's got wheels. Great makeup speed and pretty decent ball skills. Outstanding return man, playmaker with the ball in his hands. Very agile, athletic, good blood lines, his dad was Tim Wilson, who played for Maryland, and in the NFL for a few years. Some might criticize his tackling, scouting wise, but for my mark, would always come up with a solid tackle. Smart kid, marketing major and team leader. Weaknesses: Height. He's maybe 5-10, but more likely 5-9. Although has done farely well when matched up with big receivers, has the propensity to give up big plays. Maryland often left its corners on islands, but gave up a few big TD's in the past year. Summary: I think he's a good player, and I wish him all the best, but his stock will be inflated due to his KR skills. We don't need that. He will find a role as a nickel back due to his speed. Although with Maryland's recent track record of putting DB's in the NFL, Dominique Foxworth, Curome Cox, Madieu Williams, you can't really discount his limitations. To me he is going to be around the 3rd round as some team will fall in love with his speed (legit 4.4, if not faster) and his return abilities. We don't have that luxury as I feel we need a CB a lot earlier than that.
Hunt isnt an option. The Jets have Barlow who they dont use and the hope is that Turner is lining up in backfield for the next 8 yrs.
if u actually watched hunt and psu, u would know that one of the biggest problems for the nittany lions this year was their weak o-line except for levi obviously. there is a reason why hunt won mvp of the senior bowl today. he is a better player than barlow out of college hands down. his durabilty, size, and BLOCKING ABILITY make him nfl ready. Barlow couldnt block and wasnt ready to make an instant impact his rookie season. Barlow didnt play the high quality defenses that hunt played and dominated. just cuz there the same size DOES NOT make them the same kind of player. and your only proving my point even firther when u say a guy like barlow was drafted in the third. well since hunt is BETTER and more NFL READY, then he should be drafted higher!
did anyone notice tanard jackson cb from syracuse? just wondering if he raised his stock at all. hes a good kid, hope he goes somewhere that fits him.
Yea, he's worth keeping an eye on. I liked what I saw. He's tall and he's fast. Some sites have him at 6'0 188 lbs and another 6'1 195.
He's had some off the field problems so I am not sure if that is going to be prohibitive in the FO's eyes.
Stabbing incident in 04. I don't know if he's gotten into any other trouble but I do remember that one. He got stabbed in the chest. hmy:
Updated:2007-01-27 20:18:43 Smith Outplays Leak in Senior Bowl Romp Penn State's Hunt Runs for TD, Is Named MVP By JAY REEVES AP Sports MOBILE, Ala. (Jan. 27) - This time, Troy Smith was smiling after the game. http://sports.aol.com/ncaafb/story/_a/smith-outplays-leak-in-senior-bowl-romp/20070127191209990001 North Rolls South at Senior Bowl The Ohio State star outplayed Florida's Chris Leak in a rematch of quarterbacks from the national championship game, leading the North to three scores and a 27-0 win over the South in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. Smith's numbers weren't spectacular on a cold, rainy day. He completed only five of 15 passes for 52 yards with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Washington State's Jason Hill. But the Heisman Trophy winner made fewer mistakes than Leak, who had a fumble that led to a quick touchdown for the North. "Just getting a win today meant a lot," said Smith, grinning widely as raindrops pelted his helmet. "I feel pretty good, but there's always room for improvement." Smith said his next stop is the NFL combine in Indianapolis next month, but he's not sure how many of the workouts in which to participate. "I've got to talk to my agent," he said. Both Smith and Leak were fighting to improve their standing in a draft that will include Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who didn't play because of an injury, and LSU's JaMarcus Russell, who was ineligible to play as a junior. Some have questioned whether Smith is big enough to make it in the NFL at 6-foot-1, but Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said no one should question the quarterback's ability. "There's just a lot of creativity he brings to an offense, and it's fun to have honestly," said Gruden, who coached the North. "I've kind of forgotten how much fun that is." Starting during his last chance to impress NFL scouts in a college game, Smith directed a nine-play, 75-yard opening drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run off right tackle by Penn State's Tony Hunt, who ran for 38 yards on eight carries and was selected the game MVP. The South had to punt after Leak took a sack for an 8-yard loss. The North answered with a 38-yard field goal by Mason Crosby of Colorado, who capped a 30-yard drive that included Smith's 13-yard completion to Rutgers' Brian Leonard for a first down on fourth-and-7. "We asked (Smith) to make a wide variety of throws, but the big play he made was the fourth-down conversion," Gruden said. Leak, whose Florida Gators demolished Ohio State 41-14 to win the BCS Championship earlier this month, was 5-of-9 passing for 23 yards. UTEP's Jordan Palmer, the brother of the Cincinnati Bengals' Carson Palmer, completed five of eight passes for 91 yards for the South. With things already going badly, Leak was blindsided by Nebraska Jay Moore and fumbled at his own 26. The turnover set up a 7-yard TD pass from Michigan State's Drew Stanton to Aundrea Allison of East Carolina. Leak didn't talk to reporters after the game, but Smith said he and Leak spent time together in Mobile before the bowl. "I talked to Chris a whole bunch this week and let him know how much I respect him as a quarterback," Smith said. Crosby added a 21-yard field goal for the North. Hunt led all rushers followed by Hill, who gained 35 yards on a nifty reverse down the left side that helped set up the North's opening touchdown. Patrick Willis of Ole Miss lead all defenders with 11 tackles and was named the South's defensive player of the game. The game was sold out, but the 40,646-seat Ladd-Peebles Stadium was barely half full at the start.
Here's something I found while reading the million and one mock drafts out there. I thought you might be interested.
I don't think this argument is going to go anywhere so I guess time will have determine who was right. I don't think Hunt is going to amount to much more than a decent situational player and with an offensive line that is not built for a power running game I don't think he'd be a good fit for the Jets. Yes he won MVP, but his 38 yards on 8 carries resulting in the MVP is more evidence that no one in the game had a great individual statistical performance.
