This is exactly it for me. Styles is going to be a very good LB but he's in the mold of Mosley. He's not going to generate pressure or sacks. And that's fine, but you don't take Mosley 2 overall.

Reese has the ability to generate pressure and sacks and at worst, he can be Mosley. That's what I want to take a shot on.

If that’s the case then Bailey is the one you want, his sack numbers have increased all 4 years in college until he had his breakout year with 14.5 sacks, but you compared him to McDonald, however he’s the only one to have gotten better as a pass rusher.

I honestly think Reese is being projected higher than he should be, he hasn’t accomplished nearly as much as any of the guys that he’s being projected ahead of but we are hoping he does if he’s selected at number 2.

I hope I’m wrong about him if he’s selected by Jets.

There's that word again. Can I ask a VERY simple question?

Why is it considered, when drafting a player, a waste if a player gets drafted, proceeds to have a stellar career, signs two contract extensions and spends a decade (or more) manning one of 22 positions on the field? This is something that has eluded me and will continue to do so. Is it PURELY money? Seems to me, no matter the position, if you draft a kid and he becomes a cornerstone of your defense/offense, no one is going to give a shit about "where" that player was picked up. Really, the only time I ever hear about draft position is when it's an egregious miss diagnosis (Tom Brady, Brock Purdy) or an egregious whiff completely (The Vernon Gholstons of the world). People say, "oh, we could get that position in the later rounds because it's not a premium spot." Ummm...there are 1,696 active NFL players in the whole world at any one time. Seems to me that EVERY position is a premium because there are so few.

This mindset, to me, is one of the reasons the Jets blow ass. Instead of picking a kid that you KNOW is going to be a major contributor some people (I prefer fools because it seems thoroughly foolish) will skip that kid because their position isn't sexy. They'd rather hem haw and rationalize about a kid, who may/may not be a sure-fire contribution, because there's POTENTIAL. That or that useless rationale that this position is more VALUABLE than another. Stupid if you ask me.

I am with Mez on this one. The term wasted pick as it applies to the second pick in particular, when you literally have multiple top choices, be it pure Edge rusher, LB, or Safety, all of which are candidates to have a stellar career for years to come is way too harsh. In my humble opinion it boils down more about value of the investment based on the role you are targeting the very top candidate to play on your team. As such, hypothetically, the brass might see they will get more value based on our predominant style with a hybrid backer that roams the whole field and can play on the ball as an edge, versus a superb pure DE that is a monster as a pass rusher, or a top MLB, or an amazing safety. The four or five guys we keep tossing back and forth will in my view, have an outstanding career. The question is how big of a difference maker will he be on our team. Could we get more out of an Edge with the top choice and a LB later, albeit potential not as great but good enough or vice versa. Would we have a better chance for one to drop or the other? Tough call, but at the end of the day, I see it impossible to screw the first two picks up. Perhaps not the HOF we were shooting for, but a damned solid leader on D.

I don’t watch enough college ball to have an educated opinion here, but this whole debate is eerily reminiscent of the whole Baker/Sam/Allen/Rosen debate back in the day.

    It’s a dart throw.

If only Allen had actually been a part of the debate. :(

In my memory, it was like 60-30-10 Sam Baker Rosen. Everyone was laughing at the idea of drafting Mr. Inaccurate.

Oh I think he was. There were people here saying that for all his deficiencies as a passer, they were coachable (which obviously proved correct) and he could at least get you first downs with his legs.

Not that I was one of those people mind you.

I use the term waste because most teams have very few, if any, chances at picking as high as no 2.

And if you don’t land a unique player with that unique opportunity than you’ve wasted it

if your goal is just to get a good player who mans his position then trade down. You can get a good player at 7, or 15, or 32

Yeah, and of all those names, look who won the 1st Super Bowl. Hell, Rosen isn't even in the league.

To me, it doesn't matter #1, #2 or #32. Period. The ONLY way a pick is wasted is if said player is no longer on your team 4 or 5 years down the road. To me, that is a WASTED pick. Quinnen, Sauce, JJ...ALL WASTED picks. In fact, the Jets have basically WASTED most of their picks. How many guys, drafted by this team, in the last 30 years, actually managed to BE ON the team years down the road? Hell, even Pennington was a WASTED pick. By sheer virtue of the fact he was a QB should have ensured, at the very least, he be drafted, play for and retire a Jet. If the New Orleans Saints have taught us anything it's $$ is nothing more than a number and where there's a will there's a way.

I'm going to let this series of discussion die seeing as it's kind of moot. In my mind, to me, Reese is the biggest wildcard of the bunch we are talking about. The Jets aren't good enough to take a shot on a guy that is not as much a guarantee as possible. It goes Bain, Baily, Reese in that order as to who will be a 10 yr. starter in this league with the information we have right now. Other's may have a different take but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I agree with Mezz. To me a wasted pick is day 2 in the 2nd/3rd round where it really comes down to a GMs big board and holes on the roster. Most GMs try to add the best player in a position of need instead of the best player on their big board.

Bailey started for 4 years with 2 different teams. I would hope he accomplished more. If Reese returned and transferred he could put up 14 sacks. I like that we’re getting him early

Those players were flipped for picks though. So if we get a HOF from one of those picks would you still consider it wasted?

The Indiana Pro Day this week was quite a star studded affair.

Not that he needed to but Mendoza had a stellar performance and further solidified his #1 draft ranking.

Their WR, EJ Williams, clocked a 4.39 40 and rose up some draft boards. He would be a great target for the Jets in the late rounds. Big, athletic, good hands, and speed.

Stud DB, Ponds, ran one of the best 40 times of the pre-draft season clocking in at a 4.31 40.

Kaelon Black, had 27 bench press reps and a 4.43 40.

Ok here's my updated first two rounds for the Jets:

    2.) Bain
    16.) Messidor
    33.) D'Angelo Ponds
    44.) Sarratt

Bain and Messidor reunite to form a dynamic edge duo. We'll have one of the best, young pass rushing units in the league. We'll soon be like the Broncos front line 2.0. Add in a polished CB like Ponds who is pro ready Day 1 and a big bodied, elite hands and high point WR in Sarratt.

Not to mention the unquestioned chemistry of having a pair of highly successful college teammates will only accelerate the learning curve.

I don’t love how often I’m seeing Omar Cooper tied to us at 16. I think he would be a fantastic pick at 33, a decent reach for a wide receiver because the top three are gone at 16. I’d sooner wait for Surratt, Bernard, Boston at 33 or 44.

If we go edge edge CB with the top 3 I don’t think anyone on this staff makes it 2027.

Not if they perform. and you still get a promising WR in round 2. I think if the Jets draft Ty Simpson anywhere in the first 2 rounds, then your argument would be much stronger. He's the eptiome of a project and a reach that high. That would be the definition of a desperation pick and he won't even play any meaningful snaps next season. That would be a fireable offense because you have no track record to back him up besides "potential" and a very shaky resume.

Doubt it seriously. I personally don’t like those picks but who they draft and in what round will have zero to do with the faith of the leadership. Is how well the draft performs and how substancial the improvement on the field will be. If you don’t think Woody is in the loop as to potential top targets to draft you need to consider who the owner is. It will be orchestrated with him for the top two rounds at least. But if the team fails again like last year, regardless of picks, basically not showing significant improvement they will be gone.

Everyone is guilty of this at one point or another, but you can’t say “ Well if they pick the guys I want them to pick despite some concerns then it depends on how they perform” but then on the other hand say “if they draft this guy I don’t want them to draft who also has concerns it’s a mistake and they should be fired”.

And my point was more so about asset management. Almost every dollar you spent in free agency was on defense, you can’t take three top 44 picks and also sink them into the defense when you have clearing holes elsewhere. You’re basically assuming the absolute best case scenario in all ways on offense and we should never do that in general let alone as Jets fans
