Realistically one year…sure $4M guaranteed for following year but with the cap as high as it is and increasing every year, that $4M becomes pretty insignificant
Used to be a tackling machine, hopefully he still has his motor, wasn't he drafted the same year, we drafted the great Quinton Coples?
Then it effectively becomes 1 year 15 mil. Not a small chunk. Don't take me wrong, I am not against this deal, we had to do something, but it does have a sizable price tag and risk.
Nothing with a one year shelf life is a risk financially. It’s not gonna keep us from anything this year and it means nothing for next year.
4 mil will be next year. And also CAP follows a rollover system, where unused CAP rolls into the following year, CAP is constantly manipulated to push the hit forward overall, plus there is only so much the owners are willing to spend overall. So, yes, a single contract that is not good is not going to kill us, particularly a short one, and I am not even saying this is a bad one, but you do need to limit number of bad contracts and overall money wasted as eventually it accumulates.
I hope this means the jets move Sherwood. Or release him after June 1. I know the cap hit but it's worth it. He's a college safety, who Joe Douglas dreamed could play LB. He gets manhandled on run plays. Because he is small, he hangs back and tacklers the ball carriers about 8-9 yards from the line of scrimmage. Sure, he gets tons of tackles, but they are downfield. Neither him nor McDonald can stuff the run (or cover the pass).
So is this kind of like when the Jets should have drafted Ed Reed and then Ed Reed played for the Jets for a year as a consolation prize when he was 79 or something like that? I know the Jets drafted Demario Davis and he played for us twice already. The third time is a charm. I'm crabby.
I was thinking about Davis overnight, he was traded back* to the Jets once for Calvin Pryor. Pryor has not appeared in an NFL game in 9 years!! also didn’t realize he had over 100 tackles last season he’s a true Ironman
They showed a picture of him from a game last season. He’s got the “C” on this shirt, but it’s a golden C with 4 stars under it. its like acquiring general patton
THis is Glenn imitating the moves of Parcells (bringing Pepper Johnson and Keith Byars in as old vets to "change culture" in 1998). I'm really skeptical that a 37/38 y/o LB is gonna be very effective. Pretty expensive outlay for a "locker room/position room" guy if he can't still play at a high level.
This is what I keep asking people who keep bringing up his age. -hasn’t missed a game since 2013 -top 10 in tackles last year -top 10 grade against the run last year -top 10 grade overall last year What’s the basis for him falling off a cliff other than the calendar? He’s going to be terrible 6 months after he was fantastic just because time passed? Of course you can expect him to slow down but the way people are talking it’s like he’s going down the hall to play mahjong at the old folks home. And as far as the money… it’s basically a one year deal. You absolutely give that money to a guy who is playing at a high level and is renowned for being one of the best teammates/leaders in the league when you’re trying to build a team from scratch.
Yes. I was at the second day of that draft at Radio City. I was holding a poster that said "Quittin' Coples" and a picture of him looking disinterested on the sideline at UNC. Hated the pick. Wanted Melvin Ingrim or Chandler Jones. There were great debates on here between those 2. Then in the second round they traded up. I looked at my buddy and said, "It's gotta be Alshon Jeffery". Nope. Stephen Stone Hands Hill. We left after that and went to the bar to drown our misery.
I get it. I've seen the same stats. I just don't think they're effective arguments against the risk of aging and a big drop in production. Was his last good year last year or next year (or beyond). We don't know. But the base rate is not reason for optimism.
I guess there’s two schools of thought: make a decision based on what’s already happened or make a decision based on what might happen with no signs of it happening. Glad the GM went with the former.
I don't necessarily think it was a bad decision, because I don't think they had a real chance at Anzalone or Lloyd and they've needed a real field general since CJ retired. However, Davis is at an age where injuries become exponentially more likely with each year. I think Demario will play as well as his body allows him to. I still think they need to address that position.
