I hate this trade. Yes, the Jets needed a DT to replace Quinnen, but JJ has shown elite talent when healthy. I don't like this at all. I guess if they are going back to 3-4 again, it kind of makes sense, but couldn't they have moved somebody else like Will McDonald? I hope the Jets didn't give up any picks here.
Idk, he's a pass rusher and his best year he had 7.5 sacks. He was pretty good against the run, but elite level I would expect more sacks.
Totally agree. I like this trade. JJ did not show much last year, is older, and we save lots of cap space. Sweat brings some need bulk to the jets who were way too light and too weak in the front 7 last year.
JJ is not elite. He's 27 years old. 13 sacks in 4 years (albeit one on the IR). He's making 13 million this year and about to be an unrestricted free agent. This trade was a home run as long as Sweat continues at his current play. Jets save 12 million in cap space and don't have to pay him. Sweat is 2 years younger and fills their biggest need. JJ is a nice player. Definitely not elite.
We did get a productive player back though, it's not like it's just a pick. JJ was really disappointing to be honest last year. Yeah, he is coming off an Achilles, but still I thought in the second part of the season he could get better, but he got worse. What pass rush?
I hear ya. Last year he was rehabbing but before the injury he was kind of a jack of all trades. He was very good at getting deflections and pass break ups, he wasn't just a sack guy. I get what you're saying, though. You aren't wrong. He's flashed, but hasn't fully put it together.
This is true, although the Jets basically gave up on the season halfway through when they made the Sauce & Quinnen trades. I really wanted to see what JJ would become, but it's been tough sledding.
That pick 6 JJ had on Flacco was pretty awesome, even though the game was basically over. However, his pursuit and sack of Josh Allen in that home win back in '23 was his signature play as a Jet IMO. Wish it would have led to a more promising career for us, but unfortunately now he'll just be another faded footnote, foggy memory as a Jet for me.
Good luck to Jermaine, I wish he was healthy last year. He is a great pro and worked hard to get where he is at. Hope he gets to thrive in Tennessee
...this was supposed to be a response to NJJets talking about Reese off the field or covering WRs... Why do you think if the Jets draft Reese at #2 that they would not utilize him as an edge rusher? His player comp is Micah Parsons and I do not see him covering slot corners much at all. Really terrible argument here. Now if you don't think he can succeed as an edge rusher, then don't draft him. Or he gets drafted and bust as a player. But I'd bet Reese has several pro bowls in his future.
I’m not sure if there is any buzz about it but why would Jets fans think the pick is Reese? Bain is still one of the most productive players to come out of college and would be a plug and play player that can replace JJ. People are so hyped about his arms that they still refuse the eye test, he has played against guys that are going to NFL and he has been outright productive. Don’t sleep on Bain being drafted and plugged into JJ spot. The question is, is there a LB jets can grab with 16th pick if they don’t signed one in FA?
I want the "football player" over the "better athlete". Which one is that? And, Darron Lee has been in the news lately and I have that Ohio State LB thing going in my head...
Bingo, now THIS is typical Jets and, to be honest, the NFL in general. Ignore the on-field production ENTIRELY and focus on less than 2" in arm length. THAT arm length is what MAKES great football players, didn't you know?
I keep bringing this up but no one is tackling it… Bain’s measurables are historically bad for a DE. There have been TWO total DEs drafted in the top 100 since 1999 with arms and a wingspan that short. None that have had any kind of impact let alone the elite impact everyone thinks he can have. Why are you so positive that absolutely none of that matters, but shit on people that think it does matter when 99% of history says it does?
He played 51% of the snaps last year and 66% as a rookie. If he played 20 snaps a game at around 70 defensive snaps/unit his percentage would be at about 28-29%. So that makes zero sense. You only need him playing 60% because he’s coming off on 3rd and 6+ assuming he did his job stopping the run. Quinnen Williams by comparison rolls at about 65% (without doing the math of adding up all his years on PFR) for his career and he’s a 1 gap penetrating 3-technique whose 50 pounds lighter.
Everyone also needs to stop ignoring that Jermaine Johnson will also be 28 already by the close of the season and is due a contract extension. He was an old rookie and already has a major injury in his career. My only concern with Sweat is that he played next to an elite All-Pro 3-technique. He’s such a big immovable body on a low contract number though and we were terrible against the run last year.
