I don’t know how to embed the videos, Mougey seemed in command of his words and business as usual. Stated Breece Hall will be a Jet this year, and they’re looking at multiple avenues at QB. I hate to say it but Glenn did not say anything that instilled any kind of confidence. A whole lot of “the process” and “within the process” and “creating a vision of how he wants the coaching staff to look”. He seemed like he was just dancing around using standard company lines and never addressed why the staff he took so long to hire last year to “ensure that he had the right guys” are now not the right guys. He did mention however that calling plays on defense is his superpower.
For what is worth, I’m watching a splendid interview on TV at the combine by Rich Eisner with Shawn Payton. The guy oozes knowledge of the game. He doesn’t speak platitudes and processes but no shit disciplined in depth football details. He is in full control.
I saw the Rich Eisen interview with Robert Saleh. When Rich asked what Robert what he would do differently based on his Jets experience, he said he will coach the defense so he could be more into the players and game. That is basically what Glenn said was his reason for coaching the defense this year.
I haven’t seen the interview, so I’d be interested in watching it…but it sounds a lot like what the end of year press conference sounded like… Mougey sounded like the voice of reason and a guy who knows what he’s doing, and AG sounded like nothing more than a bunch of coaching bullshit speak with words that say nothing. Trust Me. Play like a Jet. I know what it takes to Win. That kind of shit that is just words but no substance. Man it just gives me zero confidence
He’s here so I have no choice but to hope he improves as a coach, but hearing him speak gives me zero confidence. He’s trying to spin it as if everything has gone exactly to plan, he actually said he enjoyed the process of hiring new coaches (not considering the fact that process took place because he had to fire a shit ton of coaches he previously hand picked, I wouldn’t say that was something to enjoy), and eventually said calling plays is his superpower. That statement alone is going to come back and bite him in the ass.
I swear, for as good a player as Glenn was, he's the exact opposite as a coach. I have a question: how in the FUCK does a guy like that ascend to the DC position in Detroit? HOW? If I hadn't watched him play, with my own two eyes, I'd damn near swear he shouldn't even be on a fucking football field! JSMH...
Yeah I mean I’m not a big fan when Glenn fucks things up in post game press conferences about the down and distance in critical spots in the game. It shows massive disorganization and a lack of attention to detail. But getting mad at a February press conference because he talked about process and what not is overkill. What do you guys expect him to say?
Honestly? How about keeping his mouth shut. Walk tall, stay silent and carry a big stick. Let Mougey do all the talking. Had Moogs done all the talking they BOTH would come off as intelligent, put together and they know what they fuck they are doing. Come'on man, this operation has been a shithole show for so long that they HAVE to do it better and cleaner than everybody else! I'd like to think they aren't complete morons. They have to KNOW that every word they say is going to get sliced and diced. That's just a fact. He just comes across as ignorant whereas if you watch Sean Payton either before or after Glenn doesn't look like he even belongs in the same profession. End of story.
Well, I’d like him to say something that shows he knows fucking football. You listen to guys like McVey or Sean Payton or Belichick talk and they can break shit down. You can tell they know fucking ball. Post game comments, how many times I’d hear Belichick recall exact plays and what the player did vs. what he SHOULD have done…shit like, well, he ran the 9 route but should have adjusted here or there, whatever, shit like that. Just listen to some of these coaches talk and you KNOW they are smart and that they understand the game inside and out, and that they KNOW the fucking game plan and the plays and why they worked or didn’t. We NEVER got anything remotely like that from AG. Instead, we got bullshit generalities. And when pressed on shit, he got defensive and pissy like a little child, and played it off with crap like “that’s Wilks’ defense”…as if he’s not the fucking HC. News flash, if you’re the HC, it’s YOUR fucking defense. Just like it’s YOUR fucking offense. It’s ALL yours…you’re the fucking HC for fucks’ sake. He doesn’t get it. And calling plays is his “superpower”??? Really? What a dumb ass stupid expression for a damn HC to use…what are you, a fifth grader? Come on! How bad does it look that all these coaches, not to mention his handpicked QB to boot, all suck? Outside of the ST coordinator, looks like pretty much all his choices look ass now. Just when I was getting over my anger that he’s still here, he goes and opens his mouth to spew the same meaningless bullshit, just to remind us that yah, no he really doesn’t have half a clue. Between him and Woody, man, I have zero faith in this team…he’s gonna half to really just knock out a bunch of wins to change his image…let’s hope he can do it, because man, the hole he’s got to dig himself out of is fucking huge.
Jermaine Johnson was traded for T'Vondre Sweat. https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2027034396327391648?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^tweet Johnson was a good locker room guy, but in my opinion mid impact.
That’s not how February press conferences work though. This whole thread and being upset falls into the category of fans overreacting.
Be quiet at a press conference that’s setup for you and the GM? Maybe he shouldn’t even attend next time lol.
I don’t know that its overreacting…I think it’s just he seems so clueless every time he has a press conference, and he backs that up on the field in games…so it’s just sad that it doesn’t feel like anything has changed with his mindset…the proof will come on the field obviously and the hope is with these coaching staff changes that they turn out to be improvements (hard to imagine them NOT being better, but hey, we’ll see), but he just seems like such the coachspeak BS from 25 years ago…say a lot of nothing. I don’t need him laying out team strategies or secrets or anything but just maybe say something that gives us confidence that you know what the issues were, you know how to fix them going forward, and so on. Again, I didn’t get to see the conference yet so I’m just assuming based on what I’ve read that it was basically more of the same meaningless BS.
You know when your wife is mad at you about something and you’re in the same room and you sneeze kinda loud and even that pisses her off? That’s kinda like what happens around here with Glenn.
I actually thought the presser went about as good as it could have possibly gone. Now, it's a presser, so it does not change much, but one big takeaway is that Glenn I feel at least understood his mistakes. Here are some examples and general takeaways. And keep in mind this is coming from one of the harshest Glenn's critics. - Took full responsibility for his failures last season. - The single biggest problem I saw last year is that he was pathetically weak schematically, particularly on defense, and what's more he kept saying it is not about Xs and Os. Now he said he needs to make sure we are solid schematically. Made a point of that actually. That is complete 180 and admission of a big mistake, which I personally was happy to see. He also mentioned he wanted to get more input from young coaches to evolve the scheme. So at the very least he understand his biggest deficiency. Whether he can fix it or not remains to be seen, and I am skeptical, but the 1st step us to realize he has a problem, and I was worried he wouldn't even do that, but he definitely did, which is a positive. - Glenn will call plays. Admitted he made a mistake last year not calling plays. Said this will not prevent him from being a head coach and having role in other phases. He clarified his DC process, and this is something I posted as well: he was considering calling plays going into the interview process and when it was done he was certain he wanted to do it himself. He did contradict the rumors that Wink didn't want to join when he said he would call the plays. He said Wink still wanted to join, but once Glenn decided for sure he would call plays, he wanted to have someone who knows his Detroit installations in and out, hence he decided to go with Duker. There was also a report from Pelissero, who is very reputable, that they made another other 1st. I suspect that was to O'Neil, who decided to stay in Detroit. - Another mistake Glenn admitted is that previously he hired coaches with good credentials but without spending a lot of time with them to make sure there is synergy. Now he made sure he spent a lot of time, and valued synergy with the coaches and himself. - Glenn is looking to install Detroit defense "4-3 personnel", but with ability to go 3-4, 4-3 whenever situation calls. I do think this is very promising to at least get to averagish defense from total bottom. - Said he feel fortunate he hired Reich, someone experienced whom he really respects to run the offense. Specifically noted young folks, like Ryan and also mentioned Stanford guys as a way to evolve scheme. ST staff stays. Mooge and Spielman took a large part on coach hiring, another difference from last year. - Clarified on Woody, where there were a lot of unsubstantiated rumors. he was not forced into hiring any specific coaches or call plays. That I think makes sense. Woody's mistake may have been keeping AG, but it does not look like he is meddling yet. So overall, this is just talk and we want to see action, but it does look like Glenn is speaking very differently than before and there are substantial changes for the better at least in his thought process. A major shift really. Whether that will translate into better performance remains to be seen. Below are the interviews:
I have ZERO problem with that. No press conference no sticking his dumb ass foot in his mouth. I have ZERO patience for AG. They talk about how a QB gets in the building first and is the last to leave? Well, THAT should only be the rule EXCEPT for the damn HC. I've already had enough of this moron's trifling ways. This guy has more put up or shut up moments coming that it's ridiculous. I find it interesting you're giving him a "pass" just because it's the off season. NFL Football HC's do not get an off season.
Honestly? I’d have liked to have heard him take accountability for the fact that 9 guys just lost their jobs under him. I don’t want to hear about how he enjoyed this process, it should have been miserable firing 9 guys and looking for replacements. I can understand speaking towards the optimism of the guys he brought in to replace them, but personally I would have liked him to state that he felt responsible for those guys losing their jobs and that his failures have real world implications, not talking about his self perceived superpowers. If he has a superpower why the fuck would he not have used it last year?
There's not a thing he could done in that moment that you wouldn't bitch about. Keep it to yourself at this point we get it, have gotten it for months.
