But the NL is not the AL. The Mets are arguably the most talented team in the NL overall. The Yankees have a lot of real competition in the AL.

That doesn't mean I think the Mets are better than the Yankees overall. It just means that they are more talented than the vast majority of teams they will face over the length of the schedule.

Oh I agree... I'm glad he's back... I'd rather have him on the mound in the PS than that worthless geek anyday...

I'm hoping Clemens isn't far behind... 2 guys who are proven playoff winners in NY... you can't put a price on that

The Mets are building a strong lineup and bullpen and going for an average rotation. They will put their starters out there only to expect 5 or 6 innings, nothing more, and then let the bullpen take over. If they get more from the starters, than so be it.

Id take quality youth also....but its only one season we're talking about here....so the age thing doesnt matter......your original post you were like it wasnt even close....lets see maine do it a few more times before we say hes better than pettitte...did you see pettittes second half numbers last year?

In this case, and only in this case (though this case does also include Clemens,) yes, the age is inconsequential. It's one, possibly two years. Over the long term, I want a guy like Maine. We have the firepower, between Wang, possibly Igawa, and the minors for this long-term answer, so it makes the Pettitte deal perfect.

But if you gave me the option right now to trade Pettitte straight up for Maine, I'd take it, and never even blink.

Thats was the Yankees formula in 96 with Rivera and Wetteland and then in 97-00 with Nelson, Stanton and Rivera. Shorten the game as much as possible.
Too bad Showalter never realized what he had in Rivera otherwise it would have been him with all the rings.

We also have Luis Vizcaino in the pen you forgot him. I think he can be serviceable, but our pen looks pretty weak at this point.

I think the pen is solid enough as long as Torre doesnt kill them again this year.

Yeah but that's the thing. We KNOW Torre will burn the pen out by year's end. I'd like atleast one more quality arm in the bullpen.

The bullpen is as Torre-proof as it's been since the end of the dynasty. Rivera, Farnsworth (it's an odd calendar year, which means he should dominate), Proctor, Vizcaino, Bruney, Britton. A number of quality hard throwing righties. He can't screw this up.

Pedro, Carlos, Willie, Omar turned the franchise around. Gotta love him. Put Art Howe back out working a NYC Taxi cab.
