Ego and dumb "culture" politics that don't actually matter once you circle back around a core acknowledgement that this is a Woody Johnson owned football team. That was also probably the second most damning decision (2nd to this hire) that this franchise made last winter btw/imo. Certainly not something that would be helping his case there.
I'm not saying your completely wrong. But I think your over reacting just a little bit. Being a head coach in the NFL has a learning curve and to some extent Aaron Glenn has (hopefully) been learning this whole past year. That is one of the reasons that we need to be a little bit careful about just firing firing firing everybody. Thats not to say we've got Bill Parcells 2.0 here but I think we need to calm down a little bit and give the guy a chance. I guess we really do need to hold the rope. I would have retained Aaron Rodgers myself and I think given hindsight now that clear as crystal would have been the better option for 2026. But we didn't, it was a mistake, and I'm sure he's learned from it. The sausage factory isn't always pretty. But we've got to at least give it a chance to work for 1 more year. Coach Glenn isn't going anywhere this year so lets at least back the guy up a little bit.
Hear, hear. It's getting really old hearing the same tired, jaded storyline on here. The fact that so many are crucifying Glenn and giving Mougey a complete pass on Rodgers is beyond laughable. It's just pure bias at its finest especially when the buck stops with the GM for all personnel moves. If you're going to slander Glenn for letting Rodgers go, then you sure as hell better hold Mougey to the same standard. Anything else is pure hypocrisy and doesn't equate. Not to mention, the vitriol here for a 1st year head coach for a team predicted to win 5 games is just odd. I'm actually looking forward to next season as this roster is going to look so much different with a huge talent infusion. Mougey is on the clock now. This is GM season, make no mistake about it. If so many want to rip Glenn for his coaching, then they have to hold Mougey to the same exact standard for his personnel moves this offseason in FA and the draft. Any other reaction and treament of one versus the other is bias, nothing more.
Sure, many lessons to be learned from all new HC’s, but integrity is part of who you are. This man has thrown his entire staff under the bus. He’s laid all of our failures last year on the staff. He fired most of them and is now having a hard time replacing them because no one wants to work here with him. He had the nerve to tell people to trust him and hold onto the rope, and then cut the rope and let his guys fall. He says we have a plan when clearly we have none at all. I don’t ever advocate for firing a coach after one year, but this man needs to go now.
It' is indeed odd why Reich hasn't been hired yet. Rooney Rule has been satisfied. It would make sense to move quickly and round out the staff. Hughes is now thinking they are considering Roman as an assistant even though they interview for OC. But given there is no obstacle now to bring in Reich, and we are still going to meet 3 guys in person, apparently Reich, Roman, and Bevell. Reich may not be a done deal just yet. https://x.com/Connor_J_Hughes/status/2017616268551954789 "The #Jets are looking for multiple coaches on the offensive side of the ball. Could be a similar situation here. Interview <Roman> for OC, but hired for something else" I don't know how these two would mesh. I do not want Roman as a QB coach. Just run game coordinator, maybe, but again not sure how these two would align, there is quite a bit of difference there. Could be a complex situation, which may not be ideal. I am very afraid of that. Better steer clear of Roman if that means Murray.
Then fire AG. I have no patience for a coach who just abandons half of the game to somebody else. AG _has_ to know offense. He can't be a HC without knowing offense, defense and ST.
I think Frank Reich would be an absolute home run. SB winning OC in Philly, prior HC with the Colts. Experienced and at the top of the game. I am also surprised why the Jets haven't just closed this deal. But then, maybe you and I shouldn't be - it's the Jets.
It's too late now. A few weeks ago there were a few pretty good candidates, but now all took HC or OC jobs. Kubiak left, but you would have to imagine he is pretty set at this point, very late in the game. Plus we just hired a DC and about to hire an OC. He is going to have to go in 2027. Reich is not some great OC candidate, but out of the guys that interviewed he is head and shoulders above everyone else and it is not even close.
Agreed on your second point. I would’ve kept Engstrand but Reich is OK. I’ve been a lot more upset with what the Jets have pursued for coordinators in the past. Reich does understand offensive football at least.
Not having a specific guy in mind to replace him makes the Engstrand firing look even worse. And Murray would be a disaster for us. He's just good enough to torpedo our draft position but will never be good enough to win a Super Bowl.
Given the dysfunction of the DC search, you almost have to wonder if Engstrand would have held on to playcalling responsibilities if the Jets failed to land either Roman or Reich, much like Glenn probably wouldn't have been calling the defense had they been able to finalize terms with Martindale or had been able to somehow land Jim Leonhard.
I think Glenn is hellbent on calling plays on defense which is why Martindale fell through and Leonhard was never a serious option. I'm at a loss re: Engstrand other than Glenn wanting a more established guy to be the "HC" of the offense with Glenn paying more attention to the defense. It's a nonsensical reason to fire a guy who was the least of our problems but Glenn is not a particularly logical guy.
Raven's new HC will call the defense, but he got a young guy off the Bears to be the HC of the offense, who never called plays before. It did not have to be experienced guy. I think there was some reason Glenn did not fully trust Tanner to run the offense without help after seeing this 1st year. Not a very logical reason I am sure, but for whatever reason Glenn preferred Reich (if he is even the guy which now I am not sure, but let's say he preferred someone else) over Tanner and wanted him in a lesser role.
I am fairly confident the Jets won't make (let alone win) a SB during my lifetime so I am not too worried about that
That win against the Pats the last time we were in the playoffs is probably the closest thing I'll ever see to the Jets winning the Super Bowl.
Starting to fear all this Reich talk might end up being a tease now. Where Woody is ultimately just going to end up hiring another completely green and "just thankful to have the owner give me this OC opportunity" type. One that might not have the same reservations about bending the knee that I'd like to imagine Frank would. I want this...so of course it can't happen.
I still think Reich was the guy, there was too much smoke there. Putting pieces of the puzzle together based on the original reporting, it looked like they wanted to demote Tanner to something like what he got now with Atlanta (like passing coordinator, but maybe have him keep OC title in name only, not sure) but bring in Reich as a veteran to call plays. Tanner did not want to stay on the sinking ship with a demotion and asked to be released, since he could get similar job in a much better situation, which he did. That opened the door for full on OC search to see if they can get someone even better than Reich. It's not like there is demand for any of the guys they are interviewing lol. But overall it is very similar to the DC hiring process. Plan "evolved". With Glenn as we all know the plan is always very fluid . And looks like a total shit show. Just trust him - he earned it. But if we end up with Reich, it might be same best possible outcome he could really get given the options available as during DC search (the outcome there being him calling plays and getting another young voice he worked with before).
I’m definitely not suggesting Roman be quarterbacks coach. That’s the absolute last thing he should be. I’m curious as to why you think Roman couldn’t be a running game coordinator with OC Reich serving as the play collar and passing game coordinator.
Per Rosenblatt Known OC candidates for Jets: - Frank Reich - Greg Roman - Darrell Bevell - Ronald Curry - Lunda Wells Known OC candidates for Giants: - Kliff Kingsbury - Brian Callahan - Davis Webb - Jim Bob Cooter - Alex Tanney - Shane Day List is definitely different lol, I wish we could have a Kingsbury.
