Mahomes must have been a terrible prospect.

Mahomes. Josh Allen. Lamar Jackson. Jordan Love.

Teams just do not trade out if the QB prospects on the board are too good.

why is it a bad example? It’s just an example of the draft lining up with three good QB prospects and three teams sitting in the top three draft slots that all needed a QB. I agree with @Borat that none of those teams would have traded their pick away…in fact, I remember the Giants tried to trade up with the Pats and the Pats said no.

So @borat’s claim that sometimes you CAN’T trade up I think has validity.

Now, the other side of that equation is ok what’s the cost…sure, if you offer a team your next 10 first rounders and then some, I’m sure you’d get a taker, but if you want to stay within some realm of rationality, I do think it can be difficult if not impossible to trade up for a QB prospect you love.

Of course, the next question is what is that rationality? Would we be willing to trade all 3 of our first rounders next year? All 3 plus other picks or players? Who knows.

And then I do agree with your other comment that it is WAY to early today to try and see who will be coming out, what kind of year they have next year, how we end up doing, etc. So nothing more than fun conversation now, and if you take the cynical jaded woe-is-me Jets view, then yeah, us winning just enough games to keep us out of the running for a top QB and then being unable to even trade up for one at an acceptable cost is kind of a typical Jets fan take. But it’s only typical because it’s been true so often…we had the 2nd pick in a one QB draft and missed out on Trevor Lawrence and then Zach set us back a lot. This year is looking to be the same…we have the 2nd pick in a one QB draft and we’ll miss out on Mendoza. How good he turns out to be, who knows? And it’s also true that oftentimes, the best QB may not be the top guy…but there again, we have such a bad history of drafting and developing QBs that it’s easy to see why so many of us are just so fed up and jaded.

But back to the original point, I don’t think it’s a bad example…I think his point was sometimes if you miss out on the draft position, you can’t really trade up to get there, and I think that year was a good example of that.

If I’m missing the point, then so be it, but that was my reading of the comments…

You think we are getting Mahomes with #10 pick next year though? Why not get one this year? It's not that simple. This year you need #1 pick to get a consensus good QB and I doubt the Raiders are trading down.

Yeah, it’s crazy but oftentimes the best QBs are not necessarily the highest ones taken.

I remember that draft and I did want Darnold in it as I thought he was the most pro-ready.

they were all good prospects but they all had questions coming out:

Mahomes from the air raid offense and questions on how it would translate to the NFL

Allen was raw and inaccurate coming out so there were some questions there (and in all honesty, he surprised me because my default position is that it’s really hard for a QB to improve his accuracy going up in competition…if he wasn’t accurate in college, I think its rare that he’ll improve in the pro’s…but Allen defied that logic)

Jackson was viewed as a running QB first and foremost I think, and clearly there were doubts about how he would do if he had to be a real QB (he also proved everyone wrong, but one thing I did notice, and we can start to see it this past year…he is SO good in the running game that defenses get REALLY concerned with it…how many times do you see him tuck and about to run, the D comes up, and he stops and lobs it over their heads? A lot. This past year he was injured and it definitely hurt him…without that crazy breakaway running threat he didn’t have as much success throwing the ball…not sure if that’s really the cause or not, but will be interesting to see how he bounces back)

The real issue is having a team, a front office, and especially a coaching staff, that can identify the QB and then put him in a system that develops him. Two things we have been notoriously unable to do with any kind of consistency.

You are confident we are getting Mahomes though with #10 pick? Maybe we can get Lamar this year with #33. I would say a long shot :)

When I said really good prospect, I was referring to someone like Manning or say Moore has another year where he takes similar step forward as before and looks polished. I don't think the teams that end up with top 2 picks in this case are trading them. Even say the Giants who have a QB probably move off Dart if they can get Manning. If they are picking top 2 probably Dart wasn't that great. But I also mentioned other scenarios that you completely ignored. "You just never know who is there with top picks, how much draft capital they want, other teams could sell out their future to jump ahead, etc..."

The point was that unless you have a pick and QB you want available with it it's not that easy to move. I don't know if you are too obtuse to get it or want to be argumentative because of previous discussions, but somehow you are not even grasping basic points without throwing some sort of hissy fit.

That's the thing, you are I exactly on the same page. I was referring to "really" good prospects, like Manning level, saying these everyone would take. I also brought other examples where teams would jump ahead of us or teams would requite a fortune, etc... Basically same things you and I discussed. But the guy wants to hone debate skills, what can you do? Literally even dropped word "really" from "really good" quote. LOL

We don't know what kind of draft it will be, there is a way to get a QB with lower picks, but much harder for us than others. We need something as close to sure thing as possible, and even then we screw it up (see Sam). Point being, if there are a couple hard to miss prospects in the draft, they go top 3, and it is best to have that pick to draft them straight up. This year, there is only one guy and we are picking 2. Will Simpson or another guy be that proverbial Lamar or Love? Maybe, but if we draft him, he probably won't be. I would love to be wrong, it's been a long time since we've had Mahomes, even though apparently he is not hard to get according to some.

Everyone who wanted to understand, like yourself, understood properly. These who want to troll will troll. If you have really good ones, like Manning may be, teams will take them regardless. Normally when you are picking top of the draft, you probably don't have a better QB than Manning. Then I had example where teams need a QB and even mentioned teams may jump us and sell out the future. Teams may require a fortune. Basically not that easy unless you have a pick aligned with a QB. Even with extra two 1sts.

But what trolls do, is take just one quote out of the entire context, ignoring the rest, actually change that quote, and then keep posting about this again and again and again as if it is some sort of ridiculous statement. Trolls are going to troll, @NOVAJET nailed it again :)

"Giants offered moon & stars to NEP for Drake Maye (No. 3). They were told “no thanks”"

See above. Not always. And if it is available, how much is the price, maybe too crazy to pay, and other teams can outbid you too. It's not that simple. I hope we find a way to get a good one in 2027 though, one way or another.

AG doesn't know offense and Engstrand is his guy. Terrible post-spin take there, imo, to suggest Engstrand wouldn't have played an instrumental role in hand picking Justin Fields for *his* offense last year.

The jets haven't had somebody that has been even remotely qualified to hold down an OC job at the NFL since 2022. We've just been filling the room with guys who fall upwards based on who they've gotten coffee for. Compared to those guys Frank Reich is representative of a massive upgrade and step forward hire for this franchise. I'd even go as far as to argue that a new actual vet OC hire was the biggest potential offseason upgrade on the possibility table.

Glad to see it happening. The offense still isn't likely to be very good in 2026 just based on the lack of talent and/or any worthwhile carry over continuity.....but the coaching and approach to QB play should at least be better. Which in turn hopefully provides more things to build on heading in to 2027 and after we play out this punt season with a main storyline of "when is Aaron Glenn being fired".

They officially interviewed Reich, and 4 other candidates, including Greg Roman (LOL). Next steps is to have in person interviews with some of these guys to satisfy Rooney rule, then hire Reich. Probably by the end of the week/Monday should be done deal.
